Of Jewish Community Services: A nursery class for trainable retarded children has been opened by Neighbourhood House, an agency of the Federation. Bernard Pes-ner is president. Mrs. Lloyd G. Stern is chairman of the special education committee which developed the plans for the class. The committee members are: Mrs. Alan Finestone, Mrs. David Nadler, Wolfe Rosenbaum, and Leon Ka-rassik. According to Mrs. Stern, who is a faculty member of the psychology department of McGill University, children for the class are chosen on the basis of social need alone. No child will be excluded on financial grounds, either if the parents are unable to pay or if they pay for the full cost. By arrangement with the Protestant School Board of Greater Montreal, the new special nursery class has been established at the Royal Vale School. A certified teacher with training and experience in working with pre-school children has been engaged, and there is also an assistant teacher with experience in working with trainable retarded children. A special study determined the need for such a class. It is being financed from a number of sources: A Montreal Protestant School Board grant will help to meet the cost of the class which is on a non-sectarian basis. The Federation will underwrite the deficit for the operation of the class during a two-year experimental period. The largest part of this deficit will be covered by a contribution presented in memory of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Glassman (Ida), by their children, E. Michael Berger, ty.C, and Mrs. Berger; and grandchildren, Naomi, and Peter David Berger. Parents are meeting part of the cost through the payment of fees. The Neighbourhood House Women's Auxiliary contribution will cover the purchase of major equipment and program supplies. The Mental Assessment and Guidance Clinic and the Psychology Department of the Montreal Children's Hospital are screening the children who are considered for placement in the special nursery class. This will be the first nursery school program conducted by Neighbourhood House for trainable mentally retarded children; and the third class for such children now under the auspices of this agency. The first two are special classes for somewhat older hyper-active, educable, retarded children.
