Sees Many Jews Among N. Y. Pagans
New York has become a "pagan city," with nearly half of its population having no organized religious affiliation, the Rev. Dr. Kenneth D. Miller, president of the New York City Mission Society, declared.
"At least 3,650,000 persons more than 14 years old are not accounted for in the organized religious life of this city," he asserted.
These findings, he said, are contained in the report of a survey, which the society will issue as a pamphlet, "New York Wistful Pagans," in three weeks. Dr. Miller noted that with the deduction of children under 15 there were in the city 6,400,000 persons "old enough to have made a church commitment." Yet he found "leas than 1,500,000 of this age group claimed in official Catholic statistics, Protestant efctuthes .with jaa^Msm iM**Mkti boo!>s Easttlravrthodox churches reporting about 60,000."
*At * liberal estimate,'' he addev* "only 600,000 Jews have an active** connection with a synagogue or temple."
Dr. Miller cited the lack of "uniformly faithful participation" even among those on the rolls of the churches.
"In our Protestant churches," he noted, "only 35 per cent go to church on Sundays. Jewish leaders confess that most of their synagogues are sparsely attended except at the hig"h holidays."
Dr. Miller analyzed the Catholic situation with special reference to Italians.
"They are climbing the economic ladder fast," he said, "making good citizens and good Americans. Italians are all supposed to be Catholics; most of them say, 'I'm a
Catholic.' However, Roman Catholic authorities would be first to admit that for all too many Italians, some say the majority, the church exists for baptism, confirmation, marriage and funeral service only. These fellow citizens are growing up to be 'good Americans' but without any vital place for religion in their lives. In view of our heritage, a good American without religion is a new and startling phenomenon."
The popular conception that all Negroes are highly religious is "a fallacy," Dr. Miller contended. The Mission Society is conducting an intensive program through it* Harlem unit and with Puerto Ricans in the East Harlem section.
"Although Harlem is dotted with churches," Dr. Miller said, "a recent survey showed that 40 per cent of the children in a certain area are receiving no religious instruction whatsoever. New York has 'cured' many Negroes of their religion."
Discussing the lack of religious education among children, he cited two public schools with an aggregate of 1,600 pupils, of whom only 600 were receiving religious instruction. The Mission Society now is conducting a part-time program of religious instruction to help remedy this situation.
Declaring that "New York's paganism is a reflection of the secularism and materialism of oar day," Dr. Miller outlined how the 185-year-old Mission Society was program
/nditJons.
"The society believes that the ^ask of gaining the interest of the 'wistful pagans' of New York is too great for any one religious organization or any single denomination," he said. "Therefore it is promoting and administering a number of interdenominational projects in which a united approach is being made by the Protestant churches in a given area."
