outstanding: part in the development of Reform Judaism in America.
He was born in Wmbaah, Ind., Aug. 9, 1862, the son of Joseph and Louisa Freudenthal Philipson. As a youth of IS, he came down from Columbus, Ohio, with his father to Cincinnati to arrange with Rabbi Isaac M. Wise about entering the Hebrew Union College which was then opening its doora. Unforgettable for him was this meeting with the famous scholar whose teachings of Reform Judaism he was destined to carry on.
He enrolled in that first class and Cincinnati was his home ever since, except from 1884 to 1888, when the youthful disciple and favorite pupil of Dr Wise carried the standards of the fledgling college eastward to Baltimore.
Dr. Philipson received an A.B. degree from the University of Cincinnati and was graduated from Hebrew Union College there in 1883. He received a D.D. degree in 1886 and a D. H. L. degree in 1925 from the college. He also held honorary LL.D. degrees from the University of Cincinnati, Lincoln Memorial University and the Jewish Institute of Religion.
Subsequently he was professor of homilctics from 1891 to 1906 and lecturer on history of Reform Judaism at Hebrew Union College.
Dr. Philipson took part in 1885 in the Reform Jewish rabbinical conference at Pittsburgh which drew up the famous "Pittsburgh platform" containing the principles of American Reform Judaism.
As rabbi of Bene Israel Congregation he foresaw the trend of population away from the downtown center of Cincinnati, and, under his leadership a new temple on Rockdale Avenue was dedicated in 1906. Dr. Philipson was active in the movement to improve municipal government in Cincinnati. In 1905 he was appointed a member of the Honest Elections Committee, which succeeded in setting up a reform charter administration.
Dr. Philipson had served as a member of the board of editors of new Bible translation, consulting editor of the Jewish Encyclopedia, and chairman of the board of editors of the Union of American Hebrew Congregations and Hebrew Union College Annual. He also had been president of the National Conference on Jewish Activities at Universities, vice-president of the American Jewish Historical Society, a member of the board of governors of Hebrew Union College, and chairman of the Commission
AM 1m
He also had served as a member
of the Jewish Publication Society of America, the Synagogue Council of America and American Jewish Committee, a trustee of Associated Charities of Cincinnati, United Jewish Social Agencies, Youris Men's Mercantile Library Association, and was a member of the Jewish Community Council. He was a former president of the Central Conference of American Rabbis.
Dr. Philipson was the author of the standard volume "The Reform Movement in Judaism," 1907, new edition, 1931. His other works included "The Jew in English Fiction," "Old European Jewries."

Hitler's Yacht Lamps And Maker Meet In N, Y.
The hand-wrought lamps of the luxurious yacht Grille and Curt Tasse, former German lamp manufacturer, met again in New York.
It was in 1935 that Mr. Tasse, then Germany's leading lamp manufacturer and dealer, completed a mysterious order to equip an unnamed boat with the moat expensive lamps and fixtures available. It was an order that started a chain reaction which three years later landed Mr. Tasie in New York and has made him a citizen of the United States.
An outfitter for such lines as the North German Lloyd, Hamburg-American and Red Star, Mr. Tasse in his Hamburg office received the order from the ship builders Blohm & Voss. It was the biggest order he had ever received in his 30 years in business.
It was only when he had partly completed the order that he learned.the unnamed boat was to be Hitler's private yacht, the Grille. By that time it seemed likely that the lamps would light up a first-class political scandal. Some high-echelon Nazis had learned that Tasse was Jewish, and there was not much doubt that heads would roll if the Fuehrer discovered he was seeing by the aid of Jewish-manufactured lamps.
Things began happening fairly quickly then. Mr. Tasse asked to withdraw from the order. He was commanded, for reasons of "personal safety," to continue. Next, a Nazi ward leader came by to inform Mr. Tasse that he was an Aryan, to which Mr. Tasse offered to show his family tree for 300 years to prove he was Jewish. The Nazi then said he would settle if Mr. Tasse would sign a statement saying he was half Aryan. Mr. Tasse refused.
In the office of his lamp store at 9 East Fifty-third Street, Mr. Tasse commented, to the New York Times: "That was the beginning of the end of my business in Germany. I got out three years later and here I am in New York and here I'm going to stay."
