CANADIAN JEWRY SEEKS STATURE FOR THE NEW YEAR, GIVES THANKS FOR THE OLD
BY SAMUEL BRONFMAN, OF MONTREAL, NATIONAL PRESIDENT, CANADIAN JEWISH CQNGRESS
As we enter the New Year of 5710 we cannot but give heartfelt thanks for the blessings which we have enjoyed during the past year. Our restless world has enjoyed a large measure of peace and even in the Holy Land, where a year ago blood was being shed in defence of , the City of Peace, the cannon has been stilled.
Our thanks go ont for the domestic peace which Canadian citizens have been enjoying. The racial and religious amity which has ever been the hallmark of the civilization of the New World has recovered from the propaganda attacks of Fascism and the ideals of equality and of fairness which are the standards of our civilization

are again on the forward march here at home.
Our gratitude for this is not tempered by our realization of how far we still have to go to achieve full application to all phases of Canadian living. Canadian Jewry is pledged to the utmost effort for the development arid intensification of our traditional culture.
By the same token the coming months and years will see us even more intensely engaged in our work in behalf of educational and cultural causes. The renaissance of Israel, the re-assertion of positive Jewish instincts in the minds of the survivors of war and massacre in Europe and the dedication of Jewry on this continent all presage a renaissance of Judaism in its traditional field of creativity the Jewish spirit and our ancient faith.
The homeless of our people have risen to found new homes. The D.P. camps of Europe, which have become the symbols and incarnation of millenia-old Diaspora, have rapidly become depopulated as one-
year-old, strife-threatened Israel energetically bestirred itself to bring to the ancient soil of Palestine scores of thousands of the harassed of our people. This immigration is taking place at an incredible tempo and on an unbelievable scale. Verily, "When the Lord returned the captivity of Israel we were as in a dream." As part of the same liquidation
of the camps of Europe we have seen other countries, among them our own country, interpret their immigration policies more generously and admit other thousands of our stricken fellow-Jews.
We have been privileged to bring and to welcome to the shores of this country more than a thousand parentless youths; we have placed them in Canadian Jewish homes;
we have found for them employment and friends; we have facilitated their adjustment and their education. We have attempted to restore their confidence in mankind. The organized community has attempted, to whatever degree that may be, to assuage their orphanhood.
