WJC GETS DP CAMP CLOSING PUT OFF
Dn Robert S. Marcus, director of the Central Office of the World Jewish Congress, expressed appre-. elation- to Geoffrey Lewis, Deputy Director, U, S. State Department Bureau of German Affairs, that
"the closing of the Lechfeld camp
for Displaced Persons in the American Zone of Germany has been postponed to January 31, 1951." He was hopeful that the change in the plans for closing the camp this year, which would have caused severe hardship, will make it possible to properly house the presert inhabitants of Lechfeld at Feldafing and Wolfratshausen DP camps in the American Zone. Israel Ponders Role In Defense
Reports have reached Israel that the United States and Britain are considering placing responsibility for defense of the Middle East solely with the British. There has 'been TO indication that the decision has been taken yet, and it is hoped that the results of the Commonwealth Conference now ?oiog on in London will provide .a clearer indication of the West's plans for this area, reports the New York Times,
Despite Prime Minister David Ben-Gurion's reiteration of Israel's official policy of nonidentification with either the East or West, his preoccupation with defense matters in a speech to Parliament revealed continuing concern to discover what place, if any, Israel had in the West's strategic planning.
It is thought that Britain's willingness to undertake responsibility for the Middle East without United States participation will depend to a large extent on what manpower help can be obtained from other Commonwealth countries, particularly Australia and New Zealand.
One other way of fitting Israel into the West's planning if no understanding is reached with Britain has been discussed unofficially. This is by, associating Israel with the North Atlantic Pact through agreement with Turkey. A warm friendship and close relations have developed between the Ankara and Tel Aviv Foreign Offices recently, and reports of discussion of an Eastern Mediterranean pact, to include both countries, have persisted against a number of official denials.
But a tie-up with Britain is considered more logical and workable and it is believed that the British War Office has been arguing for it, so far, with the British Foreign Office unwilling to go along because of fear of further antagonizing Egypt, says the Times.
It is thought likely, however, on the basis of information brought recently by unofficial but informed Britons, that if negotiations with Egypt remain stalemated British leaders will approve tentative War Office plans to establish a large base in Jordan near the Gulf of Aqaba as an alternative to maintain large forces in Egypt.
Establishment of such a base probably would require ah "understanding" with Israel. It has been pointed out that a base in South Jordan could fulfill British needs only if swift transport of troops -across the tip of Israel's Negeb were assui
the matter less than a year ago, the Israelis probably would welcome a British decision to build a base in Jordan now. For one thing, they believe it would help provide Palestinian Arab refugees in Jordan with work and a feeling of security, without which, it is believed no peace talks are possible. For another, it would make the Israelis themselves feel more secure about the Egyptians.
It is the Egyptians first and the Syrians next whom the Israelis have in mind when they speak of the possiblity that the Arabs may start a "second round" to throw the Israelis into the sea. A peaceful Jordan, separating the Egyptians and Syrians, would, it is fait, lessen the chances that Egyptian generals could persuade King Farouk to try to avenge the 1948 defeat.
SAYS ISRAEL HAS SERIOUS TB PROBLEMS
Dr. Allan Hurst, medical director of the National Jewish _Hpspi-tal at Denver, Colorado, who returned from Israel, reported that Israel was confronted with a serious tuberculosis problem and added that six out of every 1,000 residents "were active, urgent tubercular cases."
Dr. Hurst, who consulted with Israeli medical authorities, pointed out that prior to the record influx of immigrants in Israel, the tuberculosis rate was less than one per thousand.
In a series of recommendations to the Israeli authorities, Dr. Hurst, who was 'formerly supervisor of the Bureau of Tuberculosis for New York City's Health Department, called for an increase of pathologists, chest surgeons and anaesthesists. He also recommended the immediate purchase of 5,000 beds, the utilization of old barracks, barns and all abandoned buildings for the care of tuberculosis sufferers. The increase in tubercular cases, he added, was seriously impairing the economic upbuilding of the country.
Missing meals won't necessarily bring those smooth slim lines, but they make you thin, weak and susceptible to cold and flu germs. To reduce, follow a diet prescribed by your doctor. He will see that it contains necessary nourishment without the fattening elements.

Lewis told the Congress that the new closing date will make it possible to properly house all Jewish DPs now at Lechfeld at Feldafing and Wolfratshausen, where adequate space and adequate facilities would then be available.
The Congress had pointed out to the Department of State that the premature closing of Lechfeld camp would have meant depriving its 1,628 legally registered Jewish DPs of shelter of any kind during the winter months, since the facilities of the other Jewish DP camps in the American Zone of Germany, Fernwald and Feldafing, were very much overtaxed. WJC had also explained that temporary limitation of opportunity for immigration to Israel at present would prevent those who wish to go there from leaving before .next Spring, so that accommodations were necessary for these prospective immigrants until then.
