We recaU hbw the girl Juliét "grows"; how she > nins through the--dark streets ói Verona^ arid then re-mémbers the quarrél with her fá-ther; and then — we recall évery-thirig elsíe in this fílni, feeling the great power of the tragic image created by the actress. The spe-cial features óf the cinema eai-hance the fusion of sight and hear-ing.
The cinema brings Ulanova's face. and "eyes" closer to the on-looker. It is enough to recaU' a single scene, when Juliét takes the drug given -to herby Friar I^ü-rencb.

Boris Volsky's soimd-recording must be mentioned.. Only an eru-dite and sensitive musician could so expressively xétord this most difficult' scóre. *

To the cinema-goer. the film "Romeo and Juliét" is not just a tollet. TÍié audlérice döes not even notice that the pcrformers do not speak a single word; the spectator forgets that he IM watching a silent tragedy,. personified only by ges-turés. by dancing and múaic. HUNGÁRIANS. OR WEST^ERMÁNS ARE CHAMPIONS7
FÉW DAYS ago New York Daily Worker published an artswer to thb followihg quesiion; Tou ran an itena about the SpviíBt soccer team beating the Vfesi Gérmans, whó were «alled thé' chanipioris. 1 thoüght the Hqngs^ians' \bre thc ^haínpions. Can yoii clarify ?'>
The answer was: Hungary woh the soccer toűmey iií the Í892 Öl^pics, which is the oníy tiriie the beat teams froírt all över the tet tcfgether iri ohé. touma-ment, and thus is considered' thé actual intematíonal champiönShip. (West Germany was eliminated by Yugbslaviá, which was-~beatén in thé fiiials by Hungary.) IJowever. West Germany's teám nipped the Hun^fians lást sümmer in thé finals of the European Cáiampion-ship after Hungary had woh it siricé the 01ympics> So West Gef-mány. was considéréd the new champ, isince Eurqpe is the top soccer cohtin^nt anyhí^w. The Sov-

iet team's victory over- the West' Gérmans last month was not in any toumey.
So th^ way things stand tech-nicáüy, Hiingary is still the üiter-hational Olympic cRampiori in soccer until tlíe 1956 gaínes, sinc'e there is: no International competi-tion between Olympics. West Ger-mahy is still, the European Champion, whlch is considered In fact the wörid Champion, until next síunmer's European toumament, which will precedé the December Olympics. Eyerybody ' confiised now?
AÍ8 to the-actual Olympic cpm-petitive Picture In soccer, the Sov-let victory over West Germany In the big pressure match puts them right up front for Melbourne ho-nors, since the USSR has now "chariged its much criticiied meth-od of selecting a national team, and brought on top players írom any and all teamS, as the other nations do.
Hungary is also rated a fine chance to defend its honors, since it was all-vlctorious tlU it lost that game to the Germans in Germany, and one gaíne is not con-clusive evidence....
A magyar munkássport hagyományai
IRTA: R£VÁI DEZSŐ
HELYES vkezdeniényezés válik valósággá még az idén. Sor keriil a régi münkássportolók és a mai sportvezetők, kiváló sportolók találkozására. A találkozó célja a magyar munkás sportmozgalom értékes hagyományainak fel-elevénitése; Ez^^^^^ jelenlegi sportmózgalniunk erkölcsi-politikai nevelőmunkájának megerősítéséhez. ■ "
A magyar munkásspö^^^^ történetében mindig kiemelkedő jelentősége volt az évenként mégismétlődő vörös spoi;jbnapnak. 1932.
Vásárnaponként MegyertŐl Gödig munkások, gyakran munkanélküliek; kisemberek tízezrei jártak a^ Dunához. így volt ezen a vasárnapon is. A nagy tömeg részvételévé) -—,s egyben védelme alatt — folytak a játékok, versenyek és kulturális előadások, amelyeket a párt eiTe áz alkalomra, háborúellenes tüntetésre megszervezett. Délután 400 uszó vett részt az Ötkilométeres vei-senyen. Soha azelőtt ilyen nagy-tömeg nem vett részt magyar uszóveraenyen. Rendkívül lelkes volt a hangulat. A sport- " nap a fasizmus elleni nagy tüntetésbe nient át A csendőrök tehétetlenek'voltak. Egy spicli ihegkisérelte, hogy csónakból lefotografálja az úszókat, nyilván azzal a céllal, hogy aztán eljárjamak ellenük. Észrevették, gépét elvették és összetörték, őt pedig megmártották a vizben.
Mi hozta létre ezt a vörös aportnapot? Az 1932. év politikai helyzetének megfelelően a párt- a háborús veszély, a fasizmus ellen harcba hívta a munkásosztályt, a magyar dolgozókat, s felhasználta, a sport mozgósító erejét is. Az első vörös sportnapot ennek a hai*cnak egyik szakaszaként kezdték szervezni már hónapokkal előbb. Sallai elvtárs adott hozzá instrukciókat. A rendőrség minden terrorja ellenére a sportnap létrejött.

Ezek fórradalnii tagsága, gyakfan a szociáldemokrata vezetők ellenére ííüzdött a muríkásosztály általános követeléseiért.
A-sportoló ^munkásoknak harcolníok kellett egyesületeik létéért. A polgári sport >elmélete€ — amelyet a jobboldali szociáldemokraták helyeseltek — a >béké8< sport jelszavával a sporton keresztül el akarta vonni a munkásosztály figyelmét a politikai harcoktól.
A magyar munkások tömeges sportolási lehetősége először a proletárdiktatúra idején, 1919-ben vált lehetségessé.
Támogatták 1928-bán a Ganz-gyárf sztrájkolókat, részt vettek a Vörös Segély szervezőmunkájában, terjesz-
