WHArSNEW WITH MARIA AND OTTÓ JELINEK
ABOUT a year ago — In August, 1962, precisely >- Maria and Ottó Jelinek Joined the Ice' Capades in New Yorlc Shortly bdíoré thatthe pride of Bronte, Ontario^iad scoop-ed up a worid ice-skating cham-pionship in ■ Prague, Öié Jelineks* first home tówn.
A friend of ours in New York stuck his head in the Jelineks* dres^ng rooms to see how they were doing after a year aa Professionalt ^caters: the answer is just 'fíne. They joined the Ice Capades, without having lehearsed, for a re-ported $100.000 in their first sea-Bon, but theyYe so likable they*ve got away with it
Johnny LaBreque, a Montrealer who's been with the Ice Capades 14 years. says, "They'ré loved by everyone in the show, and that's not ea^y with a show llke this. It takes a special kind of person. Maria and Ottó are wonderful people." They^ convinced audíences too; our friend reports a two-min-ute ovation from the tóugh-minded capacity crowd in Madison Sqüare Garden. He says they look wonderful — that Maria, at 20. is as pretty as a fashion model and that Ottó, at 23, looks so much Üke Paul Newman he's getüng tagged Hud.
What comes next for the Jeli-neka? Ottó has aiways planned to Jóin the famlly*3 ^rting goods enteipriSQ when he retires fkom skattng. He says. though. '^We've been saylng .eve^ year ftur the last fbur, that thia ^ ia our last yearl Writem make jokei about it now^ Whatever we aay, no one will be-
Ueve it At the end of this year, we*n quit... Maybe. I don't .think we know ourselves^.. .but Maria is sure."
Maria agrees. She inténds to study languages in Eiiropé and be^ come an interpreter, perhaps át the U.N.
The season ends May 10; 1964. Between now and then, the Jelineks will have skated more than 400 performances in the 24 cities the Ice datpades goes to. Montreal sees them ftom Nov. 18 to 24, Toronto from Nov. 4 to the lOth.
How do the Jelineks like the wear^and tear of touring? Maria likes the travelling, hates the pac-king — ^You see and do a lot but I wouldn't want to do it much longer." Ottó likes touring without qualification, but he'U give it up when he marries. Recently he be-came engaged to Darlene Strick, an Indianapolis gírl. Our friend reports that Maria says she has no **romantic interests," but he also reports that Ottó laughed : and said, "Don*t let her fool you."

A SZENVEDŐ KÖLTŐ
Kilencvenöt éwel ezelőtt a gömöri Hanva községben szomorúan csengett a harang. Messzezugó hanggal adta az emberek tudtára: u-tölsót sóhajtott a költő Tompa Mihály ... A harang zúgott, zengett s a hanvai nép árva búcsúzott lelkipásztorától.
gozni.; ' ^, ,
Már ebben az időben feltűnt verseivel, melyek közül többet a fővárosi lapok is közöltek. Sikerei - azonban csak futó örömet^ okozhattak, mert betegeskedni kezdett s testi szenvedései, melyek élete végéig kísérték, zárkózottá tették.
Tanulmányai befejeztével Bején, kapott lelkipásztori állást, majd Kélemérre s onnan Hanvára került. Közben mint ismert kqltő^ több, nagyobb városba hivták, jöve-^ delmezőbb. egyházi állásba, de ő — Szakáll LJános ref. lelkész szerint—Jgy fejezte ki ragaszkodását Hanvá-hoz: "A hanvai pap hamvai Hanván^ fognak hamváni."... 1849-ben mégházasodott, nőül vette Soldos Emiliát, a-kivel élete végéig harmonikus életet élt. Boldogságát azonban nemcsak a^esti kín zavarta, de az a mérhetetlen lelki fájdalom is, melyet a szabadságharc leverése okozott neki. A nép szenvedett s vele együtt az érzékeny lelkű költő, aki níint nemzetőr-pap, vett részt a magyarság harcában, melynek leverésébe nem birt belenyugodni. Nemzetét letargiájából "A gólyához" c. versével a-karta felrázni:
- A vers megjelent. Következménye: sok heti fogság, vallatás, megalázás,. . Testben, lélekben me^örvé - ke^ rült vissza családjához Han-^ vára.
Valószi-nüleg elha^lmasodott szívbaja is hozzájárult lelkiállapota teljes leromlásához:
látomásai voltak, az Istent látta megjelenni maga előtt s hallotta hangját: "Nemso-?í"ára együtt lesztek nálam.'
1868 július 30-án halt meg.

G, Oberg nyugatnémet fizikus javasolta, hogy használják fel a Napot a városok éjszakai megvilágítására. A világűrbe inesterséges holdak se^tségével keringő sokszögű tükröt juttatnának, amelyek felfognák^ a napfényt és a földgömb bármely részére irányítanák. A német fizikus szerint ezzel az eljárással nemcsak az utcákat lehetne megvilágítani, hanem energiát nyernének a sarki jégtakarók felolvasztásához, a mocsarak kiszárításához és a ciklonok irányításának megváltoztatásahoz is.
