•TTiere's no doubt that APEC would create new opportunities and greater acces.sibility for Canadian-based corporations but I'm not sure that's a good thing.
"Many of our own corporations in Canada or B.C. are not exactly beacons of democracy or respect for the environment or labor rights or human rights. Many of our own companies are moving to APEC countries because they like the the fact they have more lax environmental and labor legislation. I don't think we want to encourage that."
The issue of connecting trade activities witJi topics such as human rights abuses and uneni-pl(>37nent has led to a gieat deal of controvei-sy around the APE(^ summit. Many people believe Canada should not even be involved in trade di.scussions with countries that have histories of human rights violations. Othei-s think the only way to improve living conditions in many of the developing countries Uiat belong to APEC, is by increasing the economic prosperity of those countries through an increase in trade.
By its nature, APEC does not include anything "non-econom-
AHemalive ideas: i'i" its agenda. It a)n-Sem Klein ot the «'ders itself apolitical Canadian Centre lor and many sensitive Policy Altemallves. topics such as poverty or the environment are often not discussed. Even the word "countries" is not used, but is replacx»d by "ea)nomies."
To express their dissatisfaction with the APEC agenda, many NGOs are holding their own conferences during the same week as APEC. Sessions such as the Second International Women's ConfeiXMice Against APEC, Public Education and APEC, the Sas-tiiinability Issues Fomm and the Indigenous Issues Forum are all pail of tlie 19i)7 People's Summit on APE(' which will provide a place to di.scu.ss alternative views toAJ^EC.
Mr. Klein says the issues that will come up in lhe.se parallel forums, such as women's rights, youth initiatives, sustainable gix)wth and human rights arc all topics that .should Ix' on the jigen-da at APEC.
"If we were interested in creating a world that actually has fair and just trade," ho said, "those are precisely the issues we should be talking alwut."
