An eye on the future
Richmond Jewish Day School co-presidents prepare for next school year with a new facility on the horizon.
KYLE BERGER SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH BULLETIN
New co-presidents Paula Segal and Phil Levinson.
For the Richmond Jewish Day School's (RJDS) new co-presidents, the priority for tlie upcoming year has never been in doubt. "The most important thing for us right now is to get tlie new building up and running," said Pliil Levinson who, with Paula Segal, heads the school's new board of directors.
"In a year from now I just want to see our new facility up and running," said Ms. Segal, who moved to Richmond from Montreal five years ago.
She says the school's future depends greatly on the new building that is set to open for the start of the 1998/99 school year. "My ultimate goal or dream is to visit the RJDS 10 years from now and to see
a thriving school, not just with academic success, but with a proper facility and extra-curricular activities as well," slie said. "I think that m get a great sense of satisfaction knowing Uiat I contributed to the school's overall success."
The private school, which opened in 1992, has increased its enrollment to 150 from 50. Wliile it has always excelled in its academic standings, the new facility vnW help improve extra-curricular activities.
The new school, which will be located at Francis and Number Five Road in Richmond, will consist of four classrooms, a gym, a small kitchen, a soccer field and a small orchard.
Tlie key additions £u^ tlie extra
classrooms, which will hold an additional 40 to 50 students, and the gym, which will also double as a sanctuary, a meeting hall and a theatrical hall for school plays and other commimity events.
The other advantage to the move, said Mr. Levinson, is the close proximity to both Highways 91 and 99. "It takes us away from just being a Jewish school in Richmond," he said. "It \vill be easier for parents who work in the city to drop off their cliildren at our new location and if we have enough interest from neighboring commimi-ties it doesn't take a whole lot of children to justify having a [school] bus."
Mr. Levinson stressed the importance of the community's financial support, noting that the school is approximately $2 million shy of its target. "While we've arranged interim finances, we have to eventually retire [them] and so I would like to urge that when people get the phone call [asking to donate money] or the brochure that they realize the existence of our scliool is really on the line here." □
