SHABBAT from page 1
Each table will have a host that will take participants through tlie meal explaining different rituals and encouraging participants to ask questions.
According to Rabbi Singer, the Torah refers to Shabbat in two ways — as a reminder of tlie creation and as a reminder of the exodus from Egypt
The former, he said, is accomplished by acknowledging God's actions during creation when Uie seventh day was used for a day of rest.
"By mimicking God's actions," Rabbi Singer said "we give testimony with our actions that God created the universe. Thereby we demonstrate that we understand our place in the cosmos. That's why we don't do anything creative."
During the six days, Jews are allowed to manipulate nature as they please, but on the seventh day, they are not allowed to, said Mr. Singer. But the idea that Shabbat is meant as a day solely where one abstains from work is a misinterpretation, explained Rabbi Singer. "Shabbat is not about refraining from exertion," he said. "It's about refraining from creative manipulative acts upon nature and the environment."
In remembering the exodus from Egypt, Shabbat is used to underline the dignity of human
beings, the rabbi continued. Shabbat reminds Jews that they are not meant to be slaves, either to other people or to themselves. "It reminds us that God took us out of Egypt, that God doesn't want us to be slaves," Rabbi Singer explained.
Though many Jews might express the feeling that keeping Shabbat is unrealistic in times of 50- or 60-hour work weeks, Rabbi Singer says leaving one day a week for rest is a matter of priorities.
"I thought that myself once," he admitted. "Now it's impossible for me to exist without Shabbat"
He added that, wliile it's commendable for people to show at least a little recognition of Shabbat, such as by lighting candles, they would be better served if they kept a day of rest as required by the fourth commandment
"I Uiink what they're doing by lighting candles is fantastic and I'd like to inspire them to fill the meaning that those candles symbolize," he said. "My job is to try to show them the beauty and inspirations that Shabbat can bring to their life." □
