Victoria fair a first
KITTY HOFFMAN SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH BULLETIN
The Jewish Community Centre of Victoria will be host and home of the city's first Jewish Book fair, featuring readings and a book display and sale, from Nov. 7-11. "We're very excited to be showcasing talented Jewish Canadian writers and the wealth of Jewish history, culture and literature to the general Victoria book-loving community," said Miriam Fisher, president of the centre.
Ms. Fisher explained that due to the small size of Victoria's Jewish community, they have never been able to afford to moimt a local version of the event that takes place across North America annually.
This year, we were able to coordinate our search for funding with the Vancouver [Jewish Commxmity Centre's] application to the Canada Coimdl" she said.
Thanks to the gracious co-operation of both the JCC and the Canada Council, everyone wins. "Victoria is able to host these wonderful writers and Vancouver
gets all their transportation costs covered. This is an excellent example of the benefits of co-operation and partnership between JCCs."
Award-winning authors Matt Cohen and Rhea Tregebov will share the Victoria spotlight with newer, acclaimed talents such as Judith Kalman and Ronna Bloom. "Another exciting feature for us," continued Ms. Fisher, "is that an independent Victoria bookseller - Bolen Books - has agreed to be the official bookseller to the Jewish Book Fair."
According to Samantha Holmes, managing director of Bolen Books, "The Jewish community is rich in literary history, talent and interest. We're delighted to be a part of this venture and are enjoying the process of learning more about the wealth of books on Jewish themes. We're looking forward to meeting the Victoria book-loving public at these events." □
