New eats, new treats
Fully catered cafe set to open its doors at tiie JCC.
KYLE BERGER STAFF REPORTER
The Jewish . Community Centre of Greater Vancouver (JCC) will be welcoming a new tenant into its cafe facility.
Chagall's, which will bring with it a new look and a full catering facility, is currently under construction in the JCC. Co-owners Jeffrey Berman and Natalie Rosengarten hope to be open for business the week before Purim.
Chagall's, named after Marc Chagall, a painter well known for his artistic impressions of Jewish persecution, will offer its patrons freshly baked goods and a varied menu of Middle Eastern and contemporary foods.
The cafe will offer in-house catering for all tenants and staff of the JCC, as well as services for oi^ganizations outside of the centre.
"We need to be able to cater to the executive in the morning who wants to pick up his breakfast on the run or mommies that want a nice low-fat muffin," Berman said, demonstrating that he and Rosengarten have investigated the community's needs.
Until December, the JCC cafe was occupied by Sabra Too, which served Middle Eastern food made at their store on Oak Street. Sabra owner Simon
Kalilon decided not to renew his three-year lease at the centre as he was not prepared to meet the expansion requests of the JCC.
Gerry Zipursky, executive director of the JCC, told the Bulletin that the centre wanted more services from tlieir in-house cafe.
'We felt that it would be best to serve our members and users of the facility [by having] a more expansive operation," Zipursky said. "Tlie new operator will be into a much more major operation of food service."
Berman, who has an ex-pertise in marketing, and Rosengarten, who previouslyran Delidousness Catering, a corporate catering cpmpany, hope to make Chagall's a popular kosher spot for the Jewish community.
"We're building a warmer, more inviting, more contempo-raiy atmosphere," explained Berman. "Something where people will think, T don't have to sit in a Starbucks if I want to sit with my mates and kibitz (fool around).' They can come and sit at Chagall's."
Berman said they are already receiving requests to cater functions throughout the community and at the JCC.
Chagall's will be B.C.K approved and will open as a milk and parcve operation. □
