Na'amat Canada is a Jewish women's organization vnih chapters in nine cities in Canada. The organization provides social, educational, and cultural programs for its membership. The Canadian group also helps support the organization's efforts in Israel.
Na'amat was founded in 1921 to support women pioneers in Israel. Its mission has expanded to encompass the support and advancement of women and their families in Israel and across the 21 countries where Na'amat works.
Na'amat is the largest women's movement in Israel, with a membership of more than 800,000. Its international arm, through organizations like Na'amat Canada, have an additional membership of 100,000. Locally, Na'amat takes a leading role in advancing the status of women and their families. Na'amat Vancouver offers its members and supporters a variety of programs throughout the year, including its guest lecture series.
The scries touches on important issues of the day for its members and brings such well-known lecturers as Concordia University Professor Norma Joseph speaking on Agunot,. Miriam Martins speaking on alternative medicine in Russia, Rabbi Twer-ski speaking on domestic violence, and Holocaust survivor Marie Doduck.
Throughout the year, members organize a variety of fund-raising activities to support Na'amat's mission.
These projects include the annual hamantashen bake-a-thon at Purim, a Chanukah dinner and a sale of cards. Vancouver's community projects include an annual retreat, a new book review committee and an affiliation witli a local domestic violence shelter where members collect and donate clothes and basic necessities.
Across Israel, Na'amat and its members also work to support women, children and families. With 1,500 facilities, Na'amat offers childcare to 25,000 children daily, providing 60 per cent of Israel's day care. It has more than 30 legal aid offices that provide free services to women facing financial or child custody problems or abusive husbands, or for those seeking agct (Jewish divorce).
Na'amat also provides management-level training for upper management positions to help close the 30 per cent wage gap between men and women; health clinics which provide information sheets on mammograms, hygiene and general health in Hebrew, Russian, English and Arabic; and provides help for more than 5,000 women by means of coimselling, support groups and rehabilitation programs for abusive husbands at Na'amat's five Domestic Violence Prevention Centres.
