Reform sisterhoods are handwriting Torali scroll
The 613th commandment in Judaism states that it is a mitzvah for every Jew to write a Torah scroll. Women of Reform Judaism, the Federation of Temple Sisterhoods, has begun a project to create a "women's Torah." Members of more than 600 sisterhoods are expected to sponsor the Torah through contributions made in honor of a bat or bar mitzvah, anniversary or other lifecyclc event.
Sandra Firsel of Temple Chai sisterhood in Long Grove, 111., (pictured) inscribes a letter on the Torah scroll with a quill tmder the watchful eye of Neil Yerman (right), the professional scribe commissioned to write the Torah. Waiting to inscribe the scroll (at left) is Elaine Saperstein of Temple Solacl in West Hills, Calif.
The scroll, which will be entirely handwritten and identical in content to all other Torah scrolls, is to be used by Women of Reform Judaism at special celebrations and events. □

Israel Bonds tries to cover the costs of a lasting peace
State of Israel Bonds is planning its most aggressive High Holy Day campaign ever. "The High Holy Days, when we pause to take stock of our lasting inheritance, is an especially pertinent time to remember how precious Israel is to us," said Gideon Patt, Israel Bonds president and CEO.
Campaign kits have been sent to more than 800 synagogues in North America.
Last year, the campaign raised $80 million through pledges made during Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur servios. The organization hopes to surpass that amount this year and part of the impetus is the shift to a peace economy in Israel.
