Gala at gallery for young adults
Party planners expect more than 350 to attend Chanukah celebration.
KYUEBERGER REPORTER
While growing up in the beautiful Lower Mainland of British Columbia has its perks, growing up in the Jewish community has always included the challenge of meeting new Jewish young adults.
Unlike in Toronto and Montreal, each with substantially larger Jewish populations, the diances of meeting a new Jewish friend while hanging out in your favorite Lower Mainland watering hole are about as likely as a sunny day in November.
However, on Dec. 4, the Young Associates of the Canadian Friends of Hebrew University will brighten the Lower Mainland's Jewish social scene when they host their 10th annual Chanukah gala.
The event, officially called Gallery of Lights, wiU take place at the Vancouver Art Gallery. It is expected to attract more iJian 350 young Jewish adults who will dance, bid for sDent auction items and socialize with people from the Pacific Northwest.
Richard Sontz, who is co-chairing the Chanukah gala vrith Jeff
Karp and Juliet Zacks, told the Bulletin that it is important for yoimg people in the community to take advantage of this once-a-year opportimity, as there aren't many chances to meet so many Jews in one place.
"At your synagogue at Yom Kippur, you're going to see more than 300 Jews, but tiieyre not all going to be young, so this event is a very valuable experience," he said.
Sontz added that although the annual party is organized so that young adults can meet other young adults, couples should not be discouraged from attending.
"[The gala] is for young Jewish adults but it isn't just a singles event," he said. "Sometimes couples don't go because they don't think it is for them but they could go and meet other couples who they have something in common with."
The gala will also benefit cancer research, as the proceeds of the event will go to the Stephen Hayward Memorial Endowment Fimd for Cancer Research at the Hebrew University.
Hayward, who played in the
Vancouver Jewish Hockey League, lost a long battle with leukemia in 1998. He was 29.
The event's fimd-raising abilities were given a boost when Ken Wosk offered to sponsor the cost of rentingthe Vancouver ArtGalleiy.
The silent auction, which will take place throughout the night, will feature a wide variety of items, such as an autographed Vancouver Canucks team jersey, Canucks and Grizzlies tickets, one night at the Wedgewood Hotel, Ron Zalko fitness passes and gift certificates to local restaurants.
This will be the first year that the event will observe Jewish dietary laws as Chagall's has been hired to cater. There will also be a no-host bar.
Everyone attending the event is encouraged to bring a non-perishable food item for the Kosher Food Bank.
Tickets for the Chanukah gala, which starts at 8 p.m., are $25 in advance and can be purchased at the Young Associates of the Hebrew University ofiBce in the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver or by calling 257-5133. □
