Waltonsteins go south
Frannie Sheridan's prepares her play for film version.
Vancouver actress Frannio Sheridan is performing her popular one-woman play The Waltonsteins for one night only, Dec. 12, before taking the show to Los Angeles. The darkly humorous play tells the harrowing story of her parents' European wartime experiences and the anti-Semitism they faced in Canada. The family converted to Catholicism and Sheridan and her six siblings were warned never to tell anyone they were Jewish. The shared lie becomes a tale of the power of family relationships and the resiliency of the human spirit.
Members of Sheridan's family originally
threatened to sue her for revealing the family secrets but, instead, the process has provided a healing effect within the family.
Sheridan now expects to turn the play into a movie. She is working with noted Hollywood director Arthur Hiller (Love Story, Autlior! Author!) to "universalize" the play in a series of workshops over six weeks in Los Angeles this winter. The play is expected to hit the stage in a small Hollywood theatre in March. The exposure of the play may help with Sheridan and Hillcr's efforts to get a distribution deal for the film, in which Sheridan will play the role of her mother.
The experience of working on a film script has, for Sheridan, been vastly different from creating the play. Although she said it seems the film has been m the works for a long time, it has really only been two years.
"It's an absolutely and completely different expression," she said. "In the grand scheme of movie-making, it's actually moving quite quickly," she said. "I hope it all comes together in 2000."
The Dec. 12 performance, which takes place at the Norman Roth-stein Theatre at 7:30 p.m., is a fund-raising effort to help pay for her work in Los Angeles. Tickets range from $15 to $25 and are available from the JCC at 257-5111.
Through her non-profit society, Sheridan has also received much-needed philanthropic support for her efforts and is continuing to seek financial backing. A question-and-answer session will take place after the performance. □
