Mixed family matters
Documentary looks at difficulties of intermarriage.
ABritish documentary to air on Vision TV Jan. 4 looks at how interfaith couples withstand prejudice and religious conflict. The one-hour BBC documentary Sleeping with the Enemy uses hamoAving footage of past and present religious wars to set a backdrop against which couples who have married outside their religions are interviewed.
The couples discuss the pressures from family, friends and society, Vcdat and Dijina, a Muslim and Orthodox Cliristian couple from Bosnia, have lived through religious warfare. The program also looks at a Catholic man married to a Protestant woman in Northern Ireland.
The program acknowledges that not all interfaith marriages succeed. In one case, a wife becomes a Jehovah's Witness and leaves her husband, taking the children with her. Another woman, who was raised by a Jewish mother and a Nazi fatlier in Germany during the war, talks about her own imusual experience. She married into a Roman Catholic family, but the marriage ended due to her husband's family because, as she says, "They didn't sec the person. They just saw 'the Jew.'" The documentary airs at 9 p.m. □
