Cruise of Dreams
Women's organization uses virtual event to raise funds.
The many cruise ships now heading for Alaska are not the only ones plying Vancouver-area waters. The "Good Ship NCJW has also set sail. The National Coimcil of Jewish Women, Vancouver Section, is carrying out its annual Friends and Angels campaign during the month of June, calling it the "Cruise of Dreams."
"This virtual cruise is the fourth year where we have raised funds with a non-event," said section president Bonnie Gertsman. "Because there have been so many fimd-raising dinners and other events taking place in the com-mimity this spring, we think oiu- members and supporters vrill respond positively to our 'stay-at-home-and-give' appeal," she said. The appeal asks supporters to "help keep our projects afloat and launch us into the future."
Some current NCJW projects, which have been serving the local community for 81 years, are: Downtown Jewish Commimity Centre Outreach; Operation Dress-Up, which collects gently used children's clothing for distribution to inner dty schools; Books for Kids and Games for Kids for low income children; support for Shalom B.C., Kosher Meals on Wheels and HIPPY (Home Li-struction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters); commimity education about breast health and Jewish genetic diseases; and annual scholarships at the University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and the Vancouver Academy of Music. NCJW raises other funds to support the Israel Family Coxmselling Association in Tel-Aviv and the Jewish community of Saratov, Russia.
Donors become eligible for draw prizes for a dinner for two at Bridges restaurant, plus a cruise for two around Vancouver harbor; two tickets to a Bard on the Beach production; or a travel bag, umbrella and $50 gift certificate from Renshaw Travel. The creative crew that developed the theme for NCJWs Friends and Angels "Cruise of Dreams" campaign includes Debby Altow, Linda Arato, Judy Coblin, Elizabeth Edel-man, Bonnie Gertsman, Gloria Hendin, Marion PoUakolT and Cheryl Woolstone.
