Bridge buddies: Annica Carlsson Hyman (with paper) presents Marjorie Groberman, second from right, with a special award.
Seniors bridge six years
Aluncheon was given to celebrate the sixth anniversary of duplicate bridge at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver recently. The lunch was hosted by four of the regular bridge players - Shirley Fitterman, Evelynne Loomer, Nomi Kaplan and Jeanette Greenhut-and catered by Lil Valech. More than 52 players attended. Following the meal, several awards were handed out. To keep the affair on the light and humorous side, awards for the most helpful player, most regular attendee, the player with most points and an award to the player arriving frequently late were awarded.
Seniors co-ordinator Annica Carlsson Hyman made a special presentation to Marjorie Groberman, on behalf of the commimity centre, for her diligence and support of this program, which she was instrumental in starting six years ago.
Duplicate bridge runs eveiy Thursday at 11 a.m. except for holidays. For more information, please contact Hyman at 257-5111. □
Gotta Sing! Iiits finale
Ever wonder where some of Vancouver's young performers like Rebecca Codling (Swing, Sweeney Todd) and Jayme Armstrong (Hotel Porter) got their start? They both are alumni of the Gotta Sing! Gotta Dance! musical theatre summer program at the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver (JCC), now in its sixth year.
The centre is once again filled with the "sound of music" as 80 talented and energetic singers, dancers and actors participate in the August session of the program.
The children (ages eightrl?) from throughout the Lower Mainland and from as far away as Israel, Duncan, Pttice George and 100 Mile House, came to participate in Gotta Sing! Gotta Dance! imder the direction of Richmond lavi^er and musician Peny Ehrlich. In particular, six children from Israel currently participating in the program were selected following an exhaustive talent search in that country.
Participants in the program have the opportunity to work with outstanding specialists - Wendy Stuart, Douglas Macaulay, Tammy Sanderson, Isabelle Maheux and Andrea Gittcns, to name a few.
The four-week program vidll culminate in a final show entitled Out of this World that features music from popular Broadway and movie musicals including Footloose, The Wiz, Hair, Oliver and Mamc. The script has a futviristic theme and is based loosely on the story of Gilli-gan's Island.
Performances are scheduled for Wednesday, Aug. 23, 7:30 p.m., and Thursday, Aug. 24, at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., in the Norman Roth-stein Theatre. Tickets are $10 each and are available at the JCC, 257-5111. □
Student writers wanted
Vancouver Hillel's student newspaper Halieslier is looking for students to write articles for the paper. What world or local events made an impact on your summer? What Jewish issues or commentary have you explored over your vacation? Perhaps there is an area of interest that you would like to explore further by conducting an in-person interview? Would you like to review books or movies? Contribute your creative poems, stories or photographs and write about your summer in your own unique way. Contact Tammy at tmclaugh@sfu.ca with articles or questions. □
