Retirement Planning
Retirement Planning, is a primary financial goal of most Canadians today. 49% of Canadians hope to retire by the age of 60. (Statistics Canada, summer 1997 perspectives and labour force survey). Whether you have already established a Registered Retirement Savings Plan, or you are interested in one now the RRSP is the best way of saving for retirement.
Remember these three "S" words. Save now, Start now and Stay invested.
Invest what you can and try to invest regvdarly through monthly payments. Regular weekly or monthly contributions help to reduce the volatility in the market place. Remember small amounts accumulate significantly over time.
The Maximum contribution is 18% of earned income less pension adjustments. As well you may have carry forward room from previous years. The contributions that you make will defer your tax until your lower earning years, as well allow the money to grow tax-free.
As of January 1, 2001 Revenue Canada has allowed a raise in foreign content in RRSPs to 30% of the book value of the account. This is an increase of 10% fi-om the same time last year. This allows an investor to take advantage of the opportunities that exist outside of the Canadian borders.
Be sure that your savings in your RRSP are well diversified across the equity and bond markets, as well as cash. 80% of the return of a portfolio is subject to the allocation of the funds not the actual holdings in the portfolio. Please see your financial consultant or myself for the appropriate mix for you.
