These gratifying numbers are a iCar cry from the original-4,433 picMiieers who banded together in /1920 tinder the leadership of David ^ Ben Gunon, /^.V J..j^s..;; '-['r -^ But even more gratifying are the "achievements of Histadrut in building a new society which iri-- spires the entire free world. While the whole is infinitely isuperior to the som of its parts, a capsule assessment of Histad-' rut's roie in basic areas follows. Amid the extreme wealth and povertyj the exploitation, tiie long . working hours. "from dawn to dusk" that typified the Middle East, Histadrut injected a sense of human dignity and social justice.
Histadrut has bargained for and gained fair labor J conditions and fair, wages. Nearly all of Israel's wage earners are under collective agreements covering wages and fringe benefits'such as health insurance, paid vacations and pension funds. ,
V Histadrut's own agencies supplement government provisions for social security and related benefits. ' .: " ■ -
A primary function of Histadrut is the economic and social integration of new immigrants and guaranteeing them equal rights with all citizens of Israel.
Histadrut's health organization, Kupat Holim, insures over 80 percent of the total papulation of Israel. Kupat Holing — with a

. By special arrangements, hon-Histadrut members are also given complete medical care: by Kupat } Holim. : 5 Histadrut's welfare agency,
Mishan, maintains homes for retired workers, pensioners' clubs and btiier facilities fOr the elderly. .Mishan also ihaintainschildrenfs villages' for youngsters with speciJUneeds.;/ ;' "iV/. .-■■Vr-.
' Hii^tadrut seeks to close the gap beitween the cultural "haves" and "have nots," s^engtiiening the foundations Of Israel's democracy. The iinmigraint population comes' from a variety of: backr grounds, with different educational standards, traditions and social concepts. ■ "• ■V:--^:-''
Histadrut also offers a wide variety of study circles^ choirs; orchestras, daunce troupes nad publications^
The organization maintains a nationwide network of 40 AMAL vocational' schools offering over 100 courses to 24,000 stCTdehts per year, many of whom receive aid from the AMAL Scholarship Fund.
Histadrut builds and maintains hundreds ,of youth centres and community centres! where social and cultural programs are avail-.
able.
Co-operative, villages—kibbutzim and moshavim — produce three-fourths of Israel's agricultural yield. A large percentage of workers live in co-operative housing developments. Histadrut's wholesale and retail co-ops are- a major factor lib goods distribution. R«^d transport is largely co-operative. . ; /
Histadrut affiliates manufac-r ture. a fifth of the industrial output, with the emphasis on cement; steel, glass, ceramics, plywood and rubber^ Science-based industries are^makihg headway. K'
Histadrut, a dynaumic economic factor, is equally concerned about flie human relations of Israel's industry. ^ ■
