"BENEVOLENCE. BROTHERLY LOVE AND HARMONY"
THE GRAND PRESIDENT OF DISTRICT GRAND LODGE
VISITS VANCOUVER
News of the visit of Grand President of District Grand Lodge No. 4, George M. Lipman, was sufficient to fill the lodge room of the Commufiity Centre to its utmost capacity on Sunday night', February 16th.
Bro. Lipman arrived here from Victoria at 7 a.m. and was met at the boat by the president and the following members: Bros. N. C. Levin, H. Nemetz, Jules Ablowitz, S. A. Goldston, M. Potter, J. 1. Gorosh, Sam Levy, H. Kamm and J. B. Jaffe. The guest was entertained at breakfast at the Hotel Vancouver. After breakfast a long conference was held in which many items concerning the future welfare of the lodge was discussed. At 10.00 a.m. the guest was taken for a long drive through the city and shown the various places of interest.
In the evening he was entertained at dinner in the Centre, by the Executive Committees of Samuel Lodge and the Ladies' Auxiliary. Forty places were set for this dinner. Later in the evening Mr. Lipman was formally introduced by the District and Zone Deputies, and received a great ovation.
The orchestra of the A.Z.A. Chapter, assisted by friends, gave a musical programme, which was greatly enjoyed. The winners of the debating contest at Portland, Ore., Milton Share and David Freeman, were introduced to the audience and congratulated on their success. Nathan Nemetz then repeated the oration he had delivered at the oratorical contest at Portland, and this was much appreciated.
The Grand President addressed the meeting, and for over an hour kept his audience enthralled with descriptions of the work and aims of the Order. Dealing with conditions that existed when the Order was first incorporated, to the present date, he showed its vast growth and the benefit it has rendered to Judaism and the world at large. He dwelt on the work of the 'Wider Scope" and its various branches. He described its activities in the Palestinian Building Fund—
The Mexican Americanization work— the A.Z.A. Movement and the Hillel Foundation.
Speaking at some length on the work of the "Anti-Defamation League, he showed what effect the order had with reference to the production of pictures dealing with Jewish subjects such as the "King of Kings'' and Freiburg's "Passion Play." By the efforts of the Order, both plays were literally made non-paying productions and were withdrawn. The strength of the Order is now so great and so highly respected, that pictures of Jewish interest must be passed by a Board of Censors selected from the Constitution Grand Lodge.
Dealing with the Hillel Foundation, he pointed out that prior to the establishment of this branch, ninety per cent, of Jewish students entering the various American universities denied their faith, but today one hundred per cent, of Jewish students are proud and anxious to acknowledge themselves "Sons of Israel."
Concluding vAth a fervent appeal for better knowledge of our own faith and history, faithfulness to the olbigations of the Order, he predicted a happier state
