Hinkis' Counsel to Appeal From 15-Year Sentence
Jerusalem, Mar. IL—The authorities of the prison where Simche Hinkis, the Jewish police constable whose death sentence has been commuted to fifteen years' imprisonment by the Court of Appeal, is imprisoned, are expecting the order of commutation and as soon as it arrives, Hinkis will shed his red death robes and chains and don civilian clothes and receive food from the put-side, to which privileges he is entitled as a foreign subject.
Mordecai Eliash, Hinkis' counsel, informed the Jewish Telegraphic Agency that Eliash expects to apply for permission to appeal to the Privy Council in London against the present sentence as soon as the judgment of the Court of Appeal is received.
AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE
In its third issue the new Bulletin has made tremendous strides. This is evidenced in its having been taken oyer by one of Vancouver's largest and finest publishing houses, The Clarke Stuart Co., Ltd.
The faith that this firm has placed in the "Centre Bulletin," and through it in the Jewish Community, is deserving of particular mention, and is indicative of the prestige this official organ of the Jewish Community Centre holds in the publishing and business world. It is ardently hoped by the Board of Governors of the Centre that the new venture will win the favor of the members of our community.
The facts behind this recent change are peculiar, inasmuch as the new arrangement will net in time a "i^ery handsome profit to the Centre.
The first two experiments with the prihted Bulletin proved rather disastrous financially. Newspaper publishing is a business in itself and requires the attention of experienced men and well established and equipped publishers. The Clarke & Stuart Co., Ltd., have undertaken to finance the "Centre Bulletin." They will pay all expenses in the way of printing, postage, and incidentals, without any cost whatsoever to the Community Centre. Furthermore, the ownership and control of the Bulletin remains in the hands of the Community Centre. Their profit will be derived entirely from the advertising space sold, and we particularly request that the members of our Community do their utmost to help this enterprising firm make this endeavour a successful one.
The mimeographed editions of the past were not run at a profit to the Community Centre. The two printed editions incurred rather heavy deficits. It will indeed be gratifying for the Community to know that through this splendid arrangement made with this old and well established firm, the Community Centre Bulletin will henceforth go out regularly every week, and not only without loss to the Community Centre, but with very substantial, potential profits.
It is a well-known ^act in Vancouver that the ifirm of Clarke & Stuart Co., Ltd., turn out the best printing in the city. The Community Centre Bulletin has at last attained the position and recognition it merits.
The first few issues of this publication will be run at a loss to The Clarke & Stuart Co., Ltd., as it will take them a few weeks to establish sufficient advertising to make it pay.
Our contract with them specifies, however, that as soon as a profit is shown on this paper, an amount will be turned over to us to the extent of ^1000.00 per year.
It is up to the members of our Community to support this paper with their advertising and to patronize the advertisers.
With real co-operation, we have much to gain, namely, a splendid paper worthy of our Community, a handsome profit, and the prestige and position in the journalistic world that is rightly ours.
