LOCAL JEWISH
Mincha and Baptism
Michael Gold in his book "Jews Without Money/' paints a very interesting portrait of one East Side character who eked out a living by going about from one missionary place to another and getting paid for becoming a convert. There is another story of two East Side Jews of a similar type, who were once waiting for the preacher to come and baptize them.
They waited and waited. Finally one said to the other: "Chayim, if the preacher doesn't hurry up we'll be late for Mincha."

V. H. A. C. League
With only four more weeks to go iin the V. H. A. C. Bowling- League at the La Salle Alleys, Eph Sugarman's pin crashers, the Cardinals, are in a dead tie with Albert Koch's willow slappers, the Bear Cats. It looks like a tough tussle to see which team plays off with Saul Lechtziers big leaguers, the Cubs, who managed to top the first half.
Just four games behind the leaders is the Zimmerman's fighting Tigers and anything is liable to happen before the end of the schedule. It appears that the Cubs are saving their strength for the pla) off; at least, that is the theory advanced for their cellar position.
As this goes to presg, Eph Sugar-man is leading the individual averages with a nice 168.4, with Alter Sil-verson right on his heels with 167.8. To Moe Brotman goes the distinction of high single game with a snappy 232, and Saul Lechtzier high three-game with a mediocre 593. The single game team record is held by the Bear Cats with a beautiful 959.
Judging from the manner in which the boys have been crashing the maples recently, however, it looks as if very few of these records will stand at the wind-up of the league.
Following is the team standing:
P W L Pts.
Cardinals................ 33 19 14 19
Bear Cats .............. 30 19 11 19
Tigers :................... 30 15 15 15
Cubs........................ 33 10 23 10
It will be noted that there are three postponed games to be played off between the Bear Cats and Tigers. Should the Bear Cats win even one of these games, it would place them in the leadership of the league.
With one more week to go, the curtain will ring down on the successful finish of the League's first season. Captain Myer Brown's team is already assured of first place whilst second posilion is still in doubt between the Royals and Imperials.
The second half of the season has shown quite a reversal in form among the players, and the list of averages which will soon be released will show many surprises.
Names of playe*rs who are now on the honor roll for this season, having bowled games of 200 or more, include the following:
Harry Ablowitz, E. M. Goldsmith, B. Glazier, Harry Wolfe, Dan Yoch-lowitz.
Scores for the games of April 3rd, are as follows:
