Annual General Meeting of Shareholders of the Jewish Community Centre
The third annual general meeting of the shareholders of the Jewish Community Centre was held in the Centre on. Monday, January 18, with Mr. W. N. Zimmerman in the chair.
A financial report was read by Mr. M. Grossman showing a decrease in revenue and expense. A general discussion followed! in which the following took part: Messrs. W. J. Levin, D. Shugarman, Nace Swartz, Dr. Pet-ersky, I. J. Klien, J. I. Gorosh, A. Rothstein, Rev. Pastinsky, E. M. Goldsmith, H. Kutchie, P. Lesser, M. Potter. Mrs. H. R. T\ah7i and Mrs. H. Nemetz. Many constructive suggestions were made and several resolutions passed for the future welfare of the Centre. The concensus of opinion was that the Centre must be maintained at all cost and that every effort should be made to collect outstanding pledges.
The value of the Centre io the Community was an established fact and the economic conditions were partly responsible for the present financial conditions. The result of the work of the Board of Directors notwithstanding the difficult times we wen'ipass-ing through showed that their work had not been in vain and deserved every praise.
The following were elected directors for the year 1932: Messrs. S. 'Chess, L. Gorosh, M. Grossman, A. G. Hirschberg, A. O. Koch, I. L. Kost-(Continued on Page 4)
Preparations are being made by the Vancouver A. Z. A. Chapter No. 119, for the Inter-Chapter tournament between Vancouver and Seattle A.Z.A. Bro. Dr. J. I. Gorosh, who was elected general chairman of the Inter-Chapter tournament, has appointed capable committees to take charge of the various activities that v/ill take place here in Vancouver on Saturday and Sunday, January 80 and 31.
On Saturday, January 30, a dance will be held at the Jewish Community Centre in honor of the visiting Alephs. On Sunday afternoon, from 5.30 to 6.30, a basketball game will take place in the Vancouver Athletic Club gym, (5th and Hemlock Sts.) between Seattle and Vancouver A.Z.A. On Sunday evening, January 31, a debate will be held at the Jewish Community Centre to decide the possession of the Robert Raphael Memorial Cup, which was won last year by Vancouver.
The subject of the debate, "Resolved that a secular Jewish University be established in America," is a subject being debated throughout Canada and the United States by every Chapter. The Seattle team will uphold the negative, the debaters being Jack Steinberg and Barney Shain. Both are experienced veterans in the field of debate. Jack Steinberg in addition to being president of the Garfield Speaker's Uiub, is also secretary to Rabbi S. P. Wohlgelenrter, and
was the oratorical champion of the city of Seattle in a contest sponsored by the Daughters of the American Revolution. He will be the first speaker on the negative. Barney iShain, his colleague, is a debater of the same calibre, and also a member of the Garfield Speaker's Club, and a member of the basketball squad. These two Alephs constitute an aggressive team which will give the Vancouver contestants strong opposition.
Sam Lipsin and Jack Foukos will uphold the affirmative, they having been picked out of a field of six contestants for the honor of representing Vancouver Chapter. The judges for the debate will be Mr. M. H. Brot-man, nominated by the Seattle Chapter, and Mr. N. G. Levin, nominated by Vancouver Chapter, the third judge to be selected by these two, and whose name will be announced in next week's "Bulletin."
The Seattle basketball team is as follows: Alephs Moe Rose, Hy Cohen, Irving Fisher, Louis Bitterman, Leo Backer, Lawrence Wolfe and their manager, John Zeigman. Mr. Michael Wolfestone, their advisor, Mr. Lou Klatzker, the International Junior Deputy, Aleph Godol Sid Jaffe and Alephs Sam Shulman, Irwin Pearl, and Carl Alt will accompany the teams.
We are assured of the strong support of the Samuel Lodge, B'nai B'rith and of the B. B. Ladies Auxiliary. Please v/atch next week's issue of the "Bulletin" for our advertisement.
