Vancouver Welfare Federation and the Jewish Community Chest "Give For the Honor of the Community"
the Campaign and give generously.
(3) Do you want to give your money (as you have done in the past) to support racketeers and others who are commercializing charitjy? If not support the Campaign and give generously. Yes support, the Campaign and support it generously. Remember we must give to the Federation more than they give us. We are to get $10,881 for our needs. This amount at least must be provided for besides the support we must give for others. Distress and misfortune knows no creed. All must be helped and we must give not only as members of the Jewish faith but also asi citizens of Vancouver.
"Give and give for a greater need." "For the honor of the Community."
During the recent Holy Days our liturgy has in many places pointed out that in Judaism there is no drastic division between man and the world. We, know that in every community there are those that are not successful and that despite all efforts seem as if doomed to failure. This is one of the mysteries of life. Judaism took this into account and the happy and successful were commanded not to overlook the unfortunate in times of disti'ess. Part of the bounty received must go to them. A feast of pfenty must see to it that no one is left to suffer from hunger. It isi a partnership with the Divine in production that makes us mindful of philanthroj^y. "To have and to hold" is possibly human but it is "divine" to share it with others. To feel no want for oneself is contentment but to know that one has reduced the want of a felloAv being is to enrich the sense of contentment. It is another instance of joy that comes through service. We have, as Jews, two duties to perform in the coming campaign by the Jewish Community Chest on behalf of the Vancouver Welfare Federation.
Firstly our duties as Jews to prove that it is no empty boast that the Jews have always supported their own charities and secondly as citizens of this City to show that we are. loyal citizens and are ready to give our share to alleviate distress and suffering wherever it may be found, irrespective or creed or color. Todaiy we are called upon to "give more for a greater need" and to do dur share as citizens. ,

man's faith,, that is a matter of man's own conscience—-we have the
same right to worship Grod in our own way as our fellow citizens.
We have the same privileges as air other citizens in all other
matters and we would feel hurt if we were not permitted to take
part in any of the activities in which our fellow citizens were
invited because we were of a different faith. In a few days you
will be called Tip on to subscribe towards the funds of the Vancouver Welfare Federation and for "the honor of the community"
we must respond generously. The Federation is asking for $400,000
a,n increase of $95,000 over the 1932 campaign.
'The Jewish Gofiamflnity Chest is one of the thirty-nirie agencies
who distribute funds so collected. We are represented on the Board
of Directors and the Budget Committee by members of our faith.
No difference has been made since the inception of the Welfare
Federation in the amounts formerly paid our Community Chest
to its beneficiaries, Until 1930, the Chest worked as an independent
body bearing the whole burden of the Community on their
shoulders. When the Welfare Federation started, an invitation was
extended to the Jewish Community Chest to co-operate and^ join
hands which they wisely did, thus eliminating waste and overlapping. In 1931 the sum of $9,881 was allotted to the Chest and
a similar amount was given in 1932. For the 1933 budget the Chest
owing to the depression and increased demands by our Hebrew Aid
Society asked for an additional $1000 and a total of $10,881 has
been budgetted as their share. Several increases and reductions | . . ,
were made in the 1923 budget and these have been arrived at ^^f"^,^"^ ^ ^"""^
with the Agencies concerned after a thorough examination of the Calumbus and the Jewish
financial and service reports of each agency submitted to the
Budget Committee. In the new Budget a special appropriation of $80,000 for clothing and books for children and $5000 for homeless men, must meet with the approval of all right thinking people. There are hundreds of children today who cannot attend School simply for lack of clothing. The winter is fast coming on and it is unthinka'ble that a provision, for such needs should not jaeet with the approval of the subscribers.
Apart from suppling the needs of thirty-nine agencies the Federation has been the means of eliminating much waste and duplication in charitable work and has saved the citizens of Vancouver many thousands of dollars. We need only refer to the anxiety and trouble we Jewsi went through before the inception of the Jewish Community Chest. The poor and unfortunate has been with us always and it is within the memory of many, how some public spirited coreligionists were compelled to go from door to door, to help those whose need was urgent. Today this is not necessary. We have a fountain head to go to and our wants are supplied. Our Hebrew Aid now has all it requires and provisions are also made for the Jewish Orphans and Old Folks without recourse to the old methods. Again the Welfare Federation has been the means of eliminating the racketeers who year by year made fortunes by collecting funds supposed to be for the unfortunate who rarely received much of the amounts so collected. One racketeer admitted that his profit for twelve months was $30,000. The commercialisation of the needs of the poor is indefensible at any time and moi^iC so in.days like these when every cent received must be spent in relief. For every dollar received 26 cents goes to neglected and dependent children, 26 cents to dependent persons 'and families, 4 cents to preventive service, 3 cents to return soldiers' fund, 22 cents for care of sick and health service, 14 cents for camps and recreation services and 5 cents for campaign and adrainistratipn cost.
There are thousands of reasons why w& as Jews should sup-.port and give generously during the coming-campaign. Let us ask you a fe.w questions:
(1) Do you >vant.to go back to the old system of being called upon .every few days to support some charity; If not support the
Campaign, and give geheroiwly. , J ; ,
(2) Do you want to go back to'the old t% ddys? If not support
Vera Gordon Appearing In Person At Orpheum
Vera Gordon, th© "Jewish screen mother" is appearing in person in the Fanchon and Marco musical comedy, "Hearts of Broadway," being shown at the Orpheum Theatre this week.
The many Jewish theatre goers will remember Mrs. Gordon's splendid portrayals in "Humoresque," "The Cohens and Kellys," "His People," and many other dramas of Jewish interest,
Mrs. Gordon made her first theatrical appearance in America about twenty years ago as a member of a Jewish stock company on the lower Eastside of New York. There, like Nazimova, Bertha Kalieh, Jacqb Ben-Ami, Morris Schwartz, Gregory Eat-off and Paul Muni, she was discovered by a scouting Broadway producer, who saw possibilities for poignant realistic portrayals as well as linguist comedy.
In "Hearts of Broadway" Mrs. Gordon appears in a typical character role as the landlady of a theatrical boarding house just off Broadway. Here she gathers the young actors, working and unemployed, feeds them and mothers them. Finally she produces a show in order to give them their opportunity.
