Bar Mitzvah Speech
We are publisbing here a speech recited by Young Master Narod on his Bar Mit2vah.—Editor.
Dear Parents and Friends:
Before I am accepted as a ful • fledged Jew it is only fair and proper I should make an effort to prove to you that I know something at least, of the duties and responsibilities of a religious Jew.
Needless to say I will not attempt to explain to you the 613 statutes and Commandments a devout Jew should follow for the simple reason I don't know them yet myself. Besides it would take many days of expounding for the person who does know them iall.
Therefore I'll have to confine myself to the foundation of Judaism which since its inception thousands of years ago has become the basis of the faiths of all civilized nations. I am sure you all realize that I am referring to the iO commandments which I shall try to interpret to you in such a way as it will coincide with modern thought.
As no one at present among modern nations believes in, or prays, to idols of any kind, and as there are many who don't believe in anything at all, and a great number who are indifferent to religion in general therefore, the first three commandments which read in short: (1) I am the Lord thy God who brought thee out of the land of Egypt; (2) Thou shalt have no other Gods before me, thou shalt hot bow down to them nor serve them; (3) Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord la vain; could be condensed into one command of 3 words: Believe in God. We so-called moderns must be taught to have a firm belief in the existence of a supreme power who created the whole universe and governs it with Justice, mercy and love. To those young and sophisticated persons among us who are liable to ask why. and wherefore? or of what use will that belief be to us? can be truthfully replied to that It is absolutely immaterial io the Supreme Being whether we believe in Him or not but it is of the greatest benefit to us in life when trials and tribulations come, and they do come sooner or later in everybody's life, the realization that we are not alone in the world, that there is a loving God to depend on, to hope, and pray to is conducive to contentment and happiness, the goal which all of us are striving to attain in life. But this belief must necessarily be interpreted into life and action. Judaism has always taught the need not only of believing In God and loving Kim with all our heart and soul, but of obeying God's will. Commenting on the passage "Ye are the children of the Lord." Cur Rabbles ask When are we the children of the Lord? and they reply. When we believe as such.
But the great question is,. What does the Lord want of us? Our great prophet Micah has supplied us wJlh a short and admirable answer to that question which I just had the honor of chanting before you in the last verse of the Haftorah. "He hath shewed thee, 0 man, what is good, and what doth the Lord require of thee but to do justly and love mercy and walk humbly with thy God?"

Now if we really and truly love God we would not even think of swearing by His name on every trifling occasion which the 3rd Commandment forbids us to do. Should we love God we would not dare abuse our bodies which are the temples of the soul. We would certainly rest of the Sabbath day as the 4th Commandment tells us to do in order to recuperate and refresh our bodies and minds, to be ready to serve our fellow men the next six days. Should we follow the precept of Prophet Micah quoted before, there would not and could not be any question of honor-ng, loving and obeying our dear parents as the 5th Commandment tells us to do, who have done and are doing so much for us, who are ready and willing to sacrifice their very life for us should the need arise, or not to commit murder under any and all circumstances including the killing of our fellow men in war time which the 6th Commandment forbids us to do, or not to commit adultery, or not to steal, or not to bear false witness against our neighbor, or not crave the property of our neighbor which the last four Commandments forbid us to do.
As we see from what I quoted religion is not merely a belief in God, or prayers, or worship, or the practice of observances. It is God interpreted in terms of social justice. It means a recognition of the fact that we are all but stewards of \yhat.^,we, have blessed that we may bless, given that we may give. It means refraining from every act of injustice^ It means giving every man his due share. It means respecting the rights and claims of others. In one sentence, religion means a ready and immediate and whole-souled response to every call of God which, interpreted in plain speech, means the need of men. Only as we realize this and follow these precepts can we claim to be really religious.
In conclusion I wish to offer a prayer:
0 Lord, grant me a noble heart and give me understanding so that i may be a true Jew and honest man. That I may be useful to my fellowmen and a good citizen of my country. Send thy blessing to my dear parents, grant them health, prosperity and a prolonged life. Send thy blessing to my brothers and entire family. Bless 0 Lord the President, officers and members of this congregation. Send thy blessing to my teacher and all the friends assembled here, 0 Lord, send thy salvation and liberation to humanity from the world wide depression. Amen.

Biblical Exegesis Little Sophie, at the Sunday dinner table, noticed that her mother had a headache.
"We learned In Sunday School today," she said sympathetically, "that Moses had a headache, too, at Mount Sinai."
"How was that?" smiled her mother.
"The teacher said," answered Sophie, "that God gave Moses two tablets."

A marriage broker took young Epstein to the home of the Brownburgs, who had a marriageable daughter. On the way, the marriage broker explained how wonderful the family was, how rich, etc. When they arrived, he pointed out the fine silverware.
"Oh," said Epstein, scornfully, "they might have borrowed that just for today."
"Don't be foolish 1" answered the marriage broker quickly. "Who would trust all this silver to such people'"

Extremes in transportation were experienced by actors and technicians who went to the Interior of Mexico for the filming of "Viva Villa 1" Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's fictional drama of the life of Pancho Villa, playing at the Capitol Theatre, starting Friday, with Wallace Beery In the Villa role.
While Director Jack Conway led his band of motion picture adventurers through the jungles of interior Mexico by burro and horse train, trl-mot-ored airplanes kept them supplied with fresh food and film.
Charles Baughn, Intrepid American aviator who has flown over Mexico for a dozen years, was In charge of the company's air transport service. Under his direction, a fleet of airships was In constant contact with the movements of the film company.
Perilous landings were made in dry stream beds, in corn fields and In the plazas of villages. In no Instance was the company in convienlent reach of an established airport.
Wallace Beery brought his own plane to Mexico City, intending to use It to reach Isolated location, but it did not leave the modern airport at Mexico City. Landings out of the Immediate metropolitan area are impossible to pilots not accustomed to Mexico's wilderness.
Filmed on Big Scale "Viva Villa!" acclaimed as one of the outstanding photoplays of the past decade, deals with Mexico's famous war lord and patriot. Spectacular battle scenes of the various revolutionary uprisings entailed the use of thousands of extras, and the entire production is reported to have been produced on a scale comparable to the magnificient spectacles in "Ben Hur" and "The Ten Commandments."
Beery's role as the turbulent Villa is the most ambitious of his career in films. Others who play prominent parts include Leo Carrlllo, Fay Wray, Donald Cook, Stuart Erwln, George S. Stone, Joseph Schildkraut, Katherine De Mine, Phillip Cooper, Frank Puglia and Henry B. Walthall.
For sheer, vraadulterated fun, a whirlwind of gags, laughs and grand music, those who haven't unlimbered their faces into a smile for years are recommended to "Shoot the Works", a fast bit of fooling, the main feature of the Orpheum's new double bill programme which opens tomorrow.
"Shoot the Works" is a comedy in rapid tempo. It takes music, song, romance—and a grand cast through a tempest of action which speeds Its characters through side-shows, flea circuses, carnivals and the radio world, with Intimate glimpses of each.
Imagine the fun with Jack Oakle as a gUb-tongued promoter of freak shows and flag-pole sitting championships, with side excursions into twilight romances. Sharing honors with Jack Oakle Is the inimitable Ben Berhie, the gag-spouting meastro, who leads his well known lads in a story that is almost like a biography of the man himself. His music is both delightful and original.
Hysterically funny, is Roscoe Karns in the role of a goofy stunt flag pole sitter—who is in a constant turmoil about his philandering sweetheart while he stays aloft to win a sitting championship.
Sterling performances are given by Alison Sklpworth, as Oakle's faithful and unofficial mother, and by William Prawley, who portrays a famous gossiping columnist.
All things considered, "Shoot the Works" is grand entertainment and there Isn't an idle moment in the film. It is a comedy heartily recommended to everyone who wants to laugu.
The second big feature presents an outstanding cast In one of the most brilliant comedy dramas of the year, "The Great Flirtation", starring Ellssa Landi and Adolphe Menjou.
"The Great Flirtation" Is a shrewdly written, handsomely mounted and intelligently directed film that purports to reveal the private lives of a famous professional couple. Wit, pungent hu-mojp and savage Irony arc the principle ingredients in this highly amusing story.

Mental Effect of Anti-Semitism and How B'nai Britii Helps
FAIRMONT 516 130 W. 5th Ave., Vancouver, B.0.
Before telling of the effects of anti-semltlsm on the Jewish mind, let us examine Its general character and let us do this in the light of existing conditions. It amounts to an expulsion of the Jew from the Gentile world. It varies in degree from the extreme of legal disabilities and tortuous terrors now prevailing in Germany to the economic discrimination and social barriers existing in the United States. But whatever the extent or intensity 01 anti-semitism in one place or the other, it has developed a serious psychological problem for the Jew.
Rapidly growing anti-semitism today throughout the world. Is having three major effects on the mind and behavior of the"Jew: First, it may deject and demoralize him. If this psychosis is not checked, its logical outcome is suicide and extinction. Sec-
ond, it may inspire the Jew to reclaim and revivify his glorious heritage, the result of this is to draw the Jews closer together in a great common cause. Third, it may leave the "assimilated Jew", in a pitiful state of confusion and chaos.
However, most Jews are turning back to their sources and people. Through newspapers, magazines, books, lectures and movies, they are being told of the awful propaganda against them on the one hand and their glorious heritage on the other. They are dismayed only to rise with pride. As Mussolini has told his countrymen to look back at the glory of Caesar—not to live by It, but to live up io it—so the Jews are being told of their great history with the same object in view. It Is the hostory not of blood and conquest, but of poetry and religion, which H. L. Mencken, in his critical book on the
"Treatise of the Gods", said was a legacy which excelled that of the Greeks.
In this dual labor, of conquering the enemy on the one hand and rising to a creative vision on the other, the Jew cannot work indivldualiy. He Instinctively seeks numbers and strength of those who face a common fate and a common destiny. He finds the B'nai Brith uniquely fitted to lead him on his new. pilgriihage for three reasons: first, it is the only Jewish fraternity that has International dimension; second, it is democratically open to men, women and even young people, irrespective of wealth, prestige or creed; third, it has had SO years of labor in anti-defamation work, giving it experience and technique which have no rival.
We have not heard of all the major acts of the B'nai Brith anti-defamation league which has aimed to protect the Jew in his mental composure and human rights. As an example it has labored incessently to gather data against the Nazis in the United States showing that the German Nazi party is actively identified with the movement here to spread anti-semitism and to degrade the Jew, as he has been degraded and limited in Germany. The Congressional inquiries, preceded by unofficial investigations, show that the German Ambassador at Washington and the German Consuls throughout the country, are subtly and quietly engaged in the treacherous work to doom the Jew to great dissabili-ties and degradation in America.
With outstretched arms, with almost maternal solicitude, the B'nai Brith beckons Israel to find succor and strength, not only to overcome the venom of hatred, but to build un-
iiic xuiuic. ill .una iiiuiiumenial
task, the B'nai Brith can sustain Itself only as Jews will to sustain it. (MRS. SOL SILVERMAN), Women's Auxiliary, B'nai Brith.
