EDITORIAL
YOM KIPPUR
As the traditional Day of Awe and Atonement comes around we cannot help but note the slackening of religious fervour and intensity at a time when a greater and more genuine religious spirit is becoming more clearly necessary.
The Day of Atonement was a day of awe for such a large section of the Jewish people that the religious value of the day nierged with the educational and it became with the Sabbath— as it was indeed the Sabbath of Sabbaths—^a great institution, a popular creation among the highest and most valuable in our national treasury.
In this respect the Yom Kippur is a true Yom Hadin, a Day of Judgment and self-judgmnet.
To those to whom the Day is still a day of glory and awe our best respects. To those who have lost some of the significance of this truly holy day, best wishes that in the coming year they may regain that sense of holiness that has made us—^not a chauvinist—^but a chosen people, a nation of priests and a holy people.
THANKS!
THE JEWISH WESTERN BULLETIN wishes to extend its thanks and appreciation to those business men and individuals who make the publication of this medium possible through their advertising and publicity support.
Vancouver business men have expressed their best wishes to the Jewish Community through our coliunns to an unprecedented degree. Th^ir advertisements make it possible for us to carry on, and to supply you with a weekly news organ, an open forum for our problems, a means of contact with the outside Jewish world, a platform from which we can inform the non-Jewish world of our attitude to problems that relate to us.
This organ has won the support and recognition of circles beyond Vancouver, and has thus placed our communuity in a very worthy light.
The business men of Vancouver who have made this possible ask of you only one thing—^your goodwill and support. There is not a single reader of our publication who will withhold this.

EDITOR.
In that astoimding gospel of New Germany, "My Battle," Hitler relates that his duty was not revealed to him until he realized that the Jew and the radical were one in essence, that in persecution of the Jews he put all Socialists beneath the rod, aud that when a Socialist was murdered it provided as fair an example to the Jews as it might had he been a rabbi. The inconsistency of then proceeding against certain Jewish capitahsts on the ground that aU the ills of the system were due to their machinations might be glaring to a logical mind, but to the mentality of a lunatic the "Protocols of the Learned Elders in Zion" provide a bridge to cross any chasm of incongruity, and so Hitler proceeded to justify his course by proving from them that Jewish capitlists deUberately abused the system in order to furnish material for Communist propaganda.
It sounds Hke the ravings of a lunatic, and it is the product of a mad brain, but the whole point is that the Jew had placed himself, in Germany, in a position v/hich rendered it possible for almost any type of propaganda against him to succeed. He had effaced himself socially, while gifts impossible to hide under a bushel made him conspicuous. Brilliant people suffering from an inferior complex are seldom liked; talented races having the same psychological defect are universally detested. No one respects a man who is ashamed of his country or his creed and there were in Germany enough Jews who apologized for both that the mass of the people readily believed all the wild charges against Israel. People, they argued, who ran in .such a servile manner after the privileges of ordinary citizen^ ship, which brought loathsome duties such as military service in their wake, must be actuated by an ulterior motive, which quite possibly, the Nazis pointed out, might be the desire of subjecting all good Aryans to the overlordship of the "Learned Elders."
The undoubted abiUty of the Jew in all fields of endeavour imquestionably aided the jealous and spiteful middle-class of Germany in arriving at their conclusions, but too much stress can be placed on this point alone. The Scots have provided people of the same race as the Germans with as many brilliant and dominating examples of great men, but the English do not proceed to execute their conquerors from north of the Tweed, and can find sufficient vent for their feelings in cursing them heartily on all convenient occasions. But did the Scot come to England with an inferiority complex which made him apologize for his very existence, while quietly through superior acumen he gathered the reins of power into his own capable hands, he should long ago have suffered the fate of the Jew in Germany. No one, however, can say that the Scot who has as many defects as any other race ever admitted them, even to himself, and he succeeds in becoming an integral part of any society he may adopt, whereas the Jew never does—quite.
That centuries of Christian persecution has made the Jew sensitive to his position among the followers of the Nazarene is indisputable, but he cannot thus excuse himself for ever. In the middle ages he may have been justified in going about the marts in fear and trembling, knowing that he was regarded as the Christ-kiUer. But few of the men who condemn the Jew most today care if his forefathers killed all the Messiahs of all the ages and aU people. His singular ability puts him in the spot-light to the envious, and that imreasonable survival of ideology of the Middle Ages makes that position vulnerable to his detractors; and the only way for the Jew to overcome it is for him definitely to overcome it.
He must realize, once and for all, that he can retain his Jewish culture without compromising, and yet become part and parcel of his environment. He does not work on the Sabbath? Neither do many nominally Christian, and it is rather a sign of economic security today to play golf on both Saturday and Sunday. His meals must be kosher? But there are also vegetarian cranks who must have their meals at special restaurants and no one refuses to recognize them as fellow citizens of considerable worth though of slightly different ideas. For the non-orthodox Jew there are not even these difficulties, but he still apologizes for his physiognomy.
Let him forget it, and become purely a Canadian of Jewish faith. It is many years in this country since we were interested seriously in one another's creeds, and the Jew will find that if he once decides to take his proper part in the work of the community he wiU be welcomed as long as he does not come to the councils with his hat in his hand. He has failed dismally in the past, simply because when anyone whispered "Jew" behind his back he suffered at once a relapse of that age-old complaint, and left the whisperer to a tawdry triumph and the rest to a new-bom doubt. Let him try. again and to the dwindling force of our present social organization bring a new vigour, a new point-of-view, and the Jewish brain.
Let him learn that emancipation lies through self-abnegation in the services of society. .
In Z. Raisins "Lexicon of Jev»;ish Literature" we find a long article on our Rabbi with the foUowing biographical information. Zlotnick lost his father at the age of three, and was brought up^by his mother. He studied in Cheder, worked hard, read voraciously. Later he studied under his brother, a rabbi, where ,he obtained a wider and more secular reading. At the age of 22 he had already written a biography of Jesus which was praised highly by Klausner (now Jewish authority on Christ, professor in Hebrew University), but was not published because of censorship difficulties. After passing his civil and rabbinical examinations he was made rabbi In Gom-bin, despite his Zionist leanings. • In 1917 he organized the Mizrachi in Poland and became executive secretary of the Warsaw office. In 1920 he came to Canada, and in 1925 visited Palestine and South Africa.
He is one of the most erudite of the rabbis, an expert In Polish, Russian, German and English literature, a poet in Hebrew and Yiddish, and a contributor to the best Yiddish and Hebrew press.
He published many essays on Mizrachi and educational questions, translated Herzl, wrote a book "Bialik's Tears," and wrote much on Jewish folklore. He collaborated with the greatest scholars In Jewish scholarship and contributed to the periodical "Rshu-moth," published by Biallk. His work includes ancient Hebrew and ancient Roman law.
He also transalted the Zend Avesta.
The "Lexicon" was published in 1928. In the last six years,Zlotnick did not waste his time. His work is too varied to mention here, and had not even been properly noted. But it includes a translation of Job and Eccleslastes, a thorough work in criticism of Bible Study, Jewish light on Shakespeare, the edition of Zionist writings, etc.
Rabbi Zlotnick recenlty published his translation of the Song of Songs.
Among the numerous thorough reviews of Zlotnick's work are Z. Raisin, Yoel Mosthbaum, B. Carl-inius. Professor M. Balaban, and Dr. Max Weinreich.
