THE FINANCIAL REPORT OF THE ADMINISTRATIVE COUNCIL
At the recent mass meeting held for the purpose of reporting to the community the work and status of the commimal organizations of the city, the chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee of the Vancouver Jewish Administrative Council did not limit himself to a tepprt of the work done to date by this very important conmiittee, but proceeded to analyze his leport with a view to deducing a more rational allocation of community funds.
Any recommendation that serves to renew interest in communal finances and to bring about a critical examination of their status should be welcomed by all responsible men, and not to be looked upon as destructive or personal criticism. It is such discussions that can save the commimity from the lethargy of outworn habits and long-accustomed financial inexpediencies.
When such a report comes from the chairman of the budget and finance committee, a man wihose close association with commimal administration, honesty of approach and disinterestedness of motive no one can for one minute question, it should be considered even more seriously and carefully.
Furthermore, the public meeting at which new officers are chosen for the coming year is the proper place and time for such propositions.
Anyone, therefore, who does not accept the recommendations in the proper spirit is obstructing the process of creative and wholesome criticism in the community.

JEWISH PRESS
In The Jewish Press
There is a large Jewish press in America, in English, in Hebrew and in Yiddish, and though the level on which it operates is not such as to make the world gape at its greatness or depth, it is sufficiently alert and significant for us to take. occasional note of what passes in it.
"THE JEWISH FRONTIER"
Probably the most significant acquisition of American Jewish journalism in recent months is "The Jewish Frontier."
This is a monthly, published in New York by the League for Labor Paestine under the ediotrship of Hayim Greenberg and Professor Hayim Fineman. Obviously it is Zionist and Socialistic in outlook, and its journalism is patently moulded after "The Nation" and "The New Republic." And in truth we must admit that the editors might easily have chosen worse models.
The pattern is the more easily followed because the social views of the new magazine are similar to those of the American liberal review, and mar-y of the star writers of "The Nation" contributes to the Jewish Review.
Thus we find in the first two issues, articles by Wm. Zukerman, 1. M. Rubinow, Horace Gregory, Louis Adamic, Oscar I. Janowsky and John Cannos.
But the star writers of the magazine are its editors. And here is
where the deficiency of the review is most clear.
In the articles on Jewish themes there is obvious a stylistic Jewish-ness that detracts from one of the aims of the magazine—to introduce to the English reading public the problems and solutions' suggested by the League for Labor Palestine. This can be well done only in the most American of styles and manners. Articles translated from the Yiddish are not sufficient.
Furthermore, one would believe that the proverty of the press in the Palestine labor movement is too great to allow of the luxury of publishing articles in two languages.
' But these minor faults aside, the magazine is a serious addition to American Jewish journalism, it is well published and laid out, and every issue is an absolute essential ip any young man aware of the national and social problems facing Jewry.
German Loan?
In the current issue of the Heb-I rew Hadoar (New York) the Yid-I dishist critics, S. Niger, has an ar-1 tide on the Hebrew writer Maxi-I mon.
I The article was translated into I Hebrew from the Yiddish. In this I article S. Niger, who is known for •* his almost fanatical love for Yiddish, displays a fine understanding of the Hebrew genius.
Zweig To
Edit Review
' NEW YORK—Plans are being laid for a serious review to be edi-|ted in English and German by Stefan Zweig for the purpose of combatting the philosophy of Fas-'cism in a.subtle manner and on a high intellectual plane. •• The review would be International in nature and would print contributions in the languages or origin. So, for instance, Blallk 'would be published in Hebrew.
Rabbi Stephen Wise is interested in the project.
It was reported this week that Germany is seekihjg: a huge loan in the United States. Needless to
point out that, with the tremendous deficit which Hitler is now facing, no American concern would seriously consider the granting of any loan to the Reich at the present time. Especially with the anti-Jewish legislation still In force in Germany and with the boycott against Germany still not being recalled.
The fact that the Nazi government intends soon to raise, an internal loan of vast proportions may be Interpreted to mean that the Hitler cabinet is not so optimistic on obtaining a loan in America. The delegatica which the German government has sent to the Unitefl States to negotiate for such a loan and which includes such a figure as Stinnes, Is still In the United States. But there is no doubt that this delegation will return to Germany without any successful results, even though certain American banking firms may be ready to consider the granting of a loan to Germany on special terms.
It may not be known to many, but it is a fact that the present administration in .Washington would cherish it premature to approve of any American loan for Germany. Hitler's chances of ob-. taining a loan in America are, therefore, very meagre.,

One of Mr. Lesser's most suggestive recommendations in regard to the allocation of the funds of the Vancouver Jewish Administrative Council is the diminution of fimds for extra-communal institutions. These comprise the funds sent to orphanages, hospitals, old folks' homes, and the so-called Palestinian charities.
A careful examination should be made of the extent to which

A story that sounds too romantic and incredible for a sensational movie is told how the Palestine loan recently floated by the Keren thTzlonrst'sysTem" Hayesod was affected by—the 37th chapter of Ezekiel.
When the loan was being negotiated it came up for discussion at a meeting of the Board of Directors of Lloyds Bank. Several members rose and spoke very favorably of the project, but others were not so enthusiastic. They reminded the meeting that the loan was speculative, without a precedent of magnitude that Palestine had not yet established its financial credit and

At one time it appeared that the opponents of the loan would sway the majority. But the chairman called for a Bible and began to read—the passage dealing with the vale of the dried up bones. "Thus hath said the Lord Eternal unto these bones: Behold, I will bring a spirit into you, and ye shall live." "Then said he unto me.
