Vision of Unity for All Jews Seen by Auxiliary President
Miss Celia Lesman Stresses Importance of Auxiliary Work in Itself
At an open meeting arranged for the pleasure of the community the local B'nai B'rith Auxiliary No. 77 on November 21, honored the visiting Grand President of District No. 4, B'nai B'rith Women's Lodge, Miss Celia Lesman of Portland.
Mrs. I. Becker, president of the local Auxiliary, opened the meeting, officially welcomed the charming visitor, and presented a short report on the year's activities. The B'nai B'rith song was sung by Mrs. B. Shapiro, accompanied at the piano by Mrs. Max Shore. Violin selections were rendered by Mr. Abram Char-kow, accompanied by Mr. Laidler.
Miss liesman in her address first stressed the singleness of Auxiliary work as a separate organization. Toucliing on the Wider Scope program of the B'nai B'rith organized to fight anti-semitism, the Grand President stated that a g^t of $3,418 was presented to the Men's Lodge this year, to be used for anti-defamation work.
TO CONCENTRATE ON EDUCATIONAL WOBE
She stated that the Auxiliary will concentrate in the coming year on educational work. In order to protect the future and social security of youth the proper background and education must be given. B'nai B'rith is endeavoring to raise funds to replace the Hillel House in California with an institution for the use of Jewish youth on the campus.
Mr. Sam Hyman, representing Samuel Lodge, spoke a few words in compliment to the guest of honor, and moved a vote of thanks to her. Mr. Myer Potter, Deputy, said a few words commenting on the fine work of the local Auxiliary, while Rev. N. M, Pastinsky in his original style was concluding speaker of the evening.
A reception taking the form of a social and tea hour was held in the Banquet Room following the meeting.

10% of All World War Dead. Jews
BERLIN (WNS)—Nearly 10% of all the soldiers killed in battle on both sides during the World War were Jews, it was revealed by the Schild, organ of the Reich Union of Jewish Ex-Servicemen, which published figures showing that of the 1,500,000 men who fell during 1914-1918 on the Allied and German sides, 141,500 were Jews.
The largest number of Jewish casualities, 80,000, were recorded in the Russian army, in which 600,000 Jews served. Of the 200,000 Jews who fought for Austria, 30,000 paid the supreme sacrifice. German-Jewish war dead numbered 12,000 out of a total of 100,000 in the army. Jewish casualities in the Hungarian amiy were 10,000; in the French army, 4,000; in the American army, 3,000 out of 200,000 who served, and 2,500 in the British army out of 55,000 who served.

HAAVARAMARKS USED FOR REMITTANCES TO GERMANY
Enables German Jews to Receive Foreign Currency Upon Emigration
NEW YORK — Haavaramarks (Jewish Emigrant Marks) can now be used for benevolent remittances to Germany, as the result of an agreement completed with the American Express Company and leading American banks, by Intria, a nonprofit making corporation whose shares are owned by official Jewish organizations in Palestine and Germany.
Thousands of Jews in Germany are willing to emigrate but cannot do so as foreign currency is not available to enable the transfer of their savings. A great number of them can be helped by Haavaramarks, a new transfer medium.
The emigrants, however, after their emigration will receive the foreign currency with which Haavaramarks were purchased and which is being held outside Germany.
The leading Jewish organizations in America have welcomed the Haav-aramark stating that it will greatly facilitate both the sending of remittances to Jews in Germany and the provision of funds for the would-be emigrants.
These remittances can be obtained at your bank, travel agency, or any office of the American Express Co.
NEW YORK—For the festive season of Chanukah, the eight day Feast of Lights, the Museum of the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, has placed on exhibition books of ceremonies, stories, gaems, riddles and music from many centuries and many lands, as well as several ancient Chanukah lamps of intricate and skillful workmanship.
The exhibition will display a variety of Chanukah books—^from a volume printed in Turkey in 1520 to a Chanukah service published in New South Wales, Australia, in 1911. One of the books shown was published in four Dutch editions and one German with dates ranging from 1723 to 1768. Konigsberg, Odessa, Jerusalem, Prague, Warsaw, Helmstadt and New York City are other cities of publication represented.
These books constitute a commentary on the story of Chanukah as it developed through the ages since the first celebration in 165 B. C.E. of the rescue of the Temple from the oppressive rule of Antio-chus Epiphanes by Judas Maccab-aeus to the current festivities of 1937.
The exhibition, which indicates the literature, art and customs generated in the 2102 years of the festival's history, will continue throughout the holiday season.
Shipping Magnate On Trial for Life
BERLIN (WNS)—Facing the death penalty if convicted, Arnold Bernstein, Jewish head of the Arnold Bernstein and Red Star shipping lines, both of which fly the German flag and operate between German, Belgian and American ports, went on trial before the Kanseatic special tribunal in Hamburg together with five Jewish directors on charges of treason and violation of the foreign exchange laws.
Arrested more than a year ago, the six Jewish industrialists have been in prison awaiting trial. In addition to the death penalty, the defendants face confiscation of their property if found guilty.
Brazil Liquidates Fascist Party
RIO DE JANEIRO (WNS)—As a double answer to charges that his new corporative constitution makes Brazil the first Fascist state in the Western Hemisphere, President Get-ulio Vargas announced the dissolution of the anti-Semitic green-shirted Integrilista Fascist Party as a political organization and formally denied in a statement to foreign correspondents that Brazil would join hands with European dictators or abandon its 100 per cent, loyalty to American ideals. In the same statement, however, he admitted that the Integrilistas supported the new regime but without any obligation on the government's part.
Dissolution of the Integrilistas was announced in a manifesto to its members by its fuehrer, Plinio Sal-gado, who declared the party's political section v/as abolished because there was no longer any need for it. Its sections on physical education, civics and morals, however, will continue, he said.
Bowling at LaSalel
Meribolas League With only three more weeks to go in the first half of the regular league schedule in the Meribolas League, Pearl Herman's fast-stepping aggregation is out in front by three full games as a result of a 2-1 victory over Miriam Matoff's trundlers, last Monday afternoon at La Salle.
Nell Matoff's pinartists are in second position in a deadlock with Ann Goldbloom's trundlers, although dropping the odd game to Sue Lech-tzier's team, while the Goldbloom sextette were administering a clean sweep over the Franks' representation.
Miriam Matoff's team is in third position, just one game behind second spot and Sue Lechtzier's team is in fourth position, just one game behind third place.
Etta LeFohn copped the spotlight for the second consecutive week by turning in some very snappy Ijowl-ing. In last Tuesday's postponed regular league fixture this diminutive trundler hung up a season single game record with a splendid game of 295 and a series of 649. Last SSonday, Miss LeFohn once again registered individual honors both ways with a series of 569 and a string of 374.
Next in order came Miriam Mat-off with 560 (216); Pearl Herman 553 (242); Ann Goldbloom 529; Ann Shubb 503 (245); Frances Weinreb 501 (208); Annabelle Ross (235); Jeanette Korsch (203); and Sally Levin (201).

ROME (WNS)—A pre-Christmas appeal for an end to the bloodshed in Palestine and for the safeguarding of the religious holy places is being prepared by Pope Pius, it was learned in well-informed quarters here.

Foe of Nazis Wins 1937 Nobel Peace Prize
OSLO, Norway (WNS)—Lord Robert Cecil, one of England's most outspoken champions of Jewish rights and a devoted friend of Palestine, won the 1937 Nobel Peace Prize. Successor to Lord Balfour as patron of the Anglo-Palestine Club, Lord Cecil is known as an opponent of Nazi Germany.
In 1933 he accepted the chairmani-ship of the governing body named by the League of Nations to deal with the probleni of . German refugees. He has often pleaded with various nations to open their doors to the German emigres. MUSSOLINI DECORATES—

viciousness and barbarism I do not know. But of this I am certain, that if we as Jews cling to our faith and practice, leading honorable lives, helping our fellow men, whoever they may be, irrespective of race, color or creed, we will again triumph over our enemies as Moses did in times gone by,

nose I could afford to take the matter philosophically, since there is no issue of state involved in Myrna Loy's grandmother's wart.
"Oh," I would say with what comfort I could muster, "there is no wart on Miss Loy's nose and that's something. I shall continue to worship her while I shut my eyes to the wart on her grandmother's nose."
But for Mr. Hitler the matter of Leni BieifenstaM's grandmother could not be anything but a national
tragedy. He had prohibited every good German from having a Jewish grandmother and every German was supposed to imderstand this Iierfectly. And many a German had thanked God for not givinghim a Jewish grandmother and had praised the wisdom of God for knowing the right people on whom to inflict Jewish grandmothers.
Mr. Hitler could be only the more resentful against Leni Rieffenstahl's grandmother, because she had come
force. We are not a military people and we cannot answer our enemy out of her grave to haunt the chan-
with guns even if we would. We have only one answer to Hitler and
cellory. You can do something to a living grandmother who has en-
that is our self-respect, our love of gaged in a Jewish conspiracy in the
God and man. With such an attitude we shall survive as we have in the past, long after our persecutors have been forgotten."
The opening address on behalf of the national officers of the Joint Distribution Committee was given by Paul Baerwald, chairman of the J. D.C. Associated with Mr. Baerwald as national sponsors of the meeting was James N. Rosenberg, chairman of the National Council of the J.D, C; William Rosenwald of Greenwich, Conn., co-chairman of the J. chancellory, as one might say. You can put her in a concentration camp, you can chop off her head.
But there was nothing to be done with Leni Rieffenstahl's granmother. Nor was there anything at the moment he could think of doing (or even greatly desired to do) about Leni Rieffenstahl. A pretty head like hers is not so simply chopped off, even if it is a head that had feloniously harbored the secret about Leni's grandmother.
It is easy enough to understand how Mr. Hitler felt about it. I consider what I would have done had I
(while kneeling at Myrna Loy's feet) discovered the suppositious wart on her grandmother's nose. In such a crisis I should prefer to remember the many happy evenings in the Forest Theater when I swam in the depths of Miss Loy's eyes. No, I would say, I ought not to take rash action, I must consider the matter cautiously.
Just as cautious was Mr. Hitler. When Mr. Goebbels came to him and told him that he had found a Jewish grandmother in the Reiffenstahl burial plot, Mr. Hitler was at first unbelieving.
"Goebbels," he said, "this is impossible."
He recalled that he had issued a positive prohibition against Jewish grandmothers . . . "It's impossible, my dear Goebbels."
The look Mr. Goebbels gave him admonished him that he was going too far. No Aryan ever before had suggested that anything the Minister of Enligtenment said was impossible.
"I beg your pardon, my dear Goebbels. What I mean to say is that your light discovers even the impossible. It pentrates even to the grave. If I seemed to speak subver-sively for the moment, you must realize that Leni Rieffenstahl has been my favorite cinema actress." j "Yes, excellency, but you must realize her grartdmother."
Mr. Hitler could not but feel at first the generous emotions that I myself would feel were I to discover the imperfection of Miss Loy's grandmother's nose. He preferred to think of the enchantment of Miss Rieffenstahl's countenance.
"But her eyes!" he sighed.
"Eyes of her grandmother!" snapped Mr. Goebbels. "Jewish eyes by which to lure honest Aryans."

"And, oh, the ringlets on Leni's neck, my dear Goebbels!"
"Jewish ringlets on which to hang Aryans, excellency!"
"But, Goebbels, isn't there anything we can do?" Mr. Hitler remembered what had been done with Jesus in a similar crisis. He had been made an Aryan and thus had continued to hang in all the churches. Perhaps the same could be done for Leni Rieffenstahl's grandmother.
Mr. Goebbels thought it would be departing from national policy too far to favor more than one Jew. No, nothing must be done to diminish the dignity of the dictatorship which had prohibited Jewish grandmothers.
Yes, one who like me adores Myrna Loy can sympathize with Mr. Hitler. Whereas I would have only the wart on Miss Loy's grandmother's nose to trouble me, Mr. Hitler had a wholly imperfect grandmother on his mind ... a grandmother who in her grave had been undermining the Aryan idpal by in-filtering her ghost even in the chancellory!
Mr. Goebbelis said there was only one thing to do: to banish Leni Rieffepstahl. She must learn that the prohibition of Jewish grandmothers was not to be trifled with | . . . "She must be denounced and banished, excellency!"
"But yotido it,; my dear Goebbels!"
So it happened that it was Mr. Goebbels who stood that evening in Minister Frick's. house and pointed the scornful finger at Leni Rieffenstahl's grandmother.
It may be asked how I know all this. A wind that had blown from Germany brought it to me ... a laughing wind that, having escaped from Germany, could laugh.
