VIENNA (WNS)—At the very moment that thouasnds of Jews and Christian anti-Nazis were thronging synagoguies and churches to offer prayers of thanksgiving to President Roosevelt foir the American proposal to create an' international government committee to provide a haven for refugees from Austria, Field Marshal Hermann ..doering, Germany's number two man, entered Vienna in triumph and proclaimed that the Jews must go. NAZIS SniC|fOR BILL!!
Bund Meeting Convertlil Into Anti-Nazi Rally
"Think of Austrian Jews When You Give to J.D.C. this Year,'^ Says Noteci Author-Lecturer
TRENTON, N.J. (WNS)—A schedf uled meeting of the German-Amerir can Bund in Hell's Hall was convert^ ed into an antt-Nazi rally when war
general. In the recent days there have been moment of appeasement when things looked better for the world; but for Jews it was by the moment getting worse ... Jews in Vienna committing suicide . . . Jews imder arrest . . . Jews' stores pillaged . . Jews killed in Poland. Currently my poor addled mind has been giving itself to craizy thoughts of assassination. I have wished to be a great physicist for the sole purpose of discovering a fatal' ray on which I need but write the names and addresses of dictators and send it direct to their hearts. In the morning they will be found in their beds. "Fuehrer!" "DuceJ"
"Arise! It is the day for another of ovu- victories!"
"Awake! It is the day for the grandest air-raid over Barcelona!"
But they do not stir, and the news goes out to the. world . . . "Hitler dead! Mussolini dead! Both dead in the night!" . ». The people (who don't know it was my ray that did this) say there is a God in the world after all . . . God of justice . . . God of retribution . . . God of mercy who humbles the arrogant in a night.
The armies bow before the Most High; and those of the clergy who bent their knees to the dictators now are quick to seek alliance with God;
declared in an interview published in the London Daily Express. "Europe could hardly be more disagreeably surprised if he (Hitler) had revived witch burning," Shaw said. "The e-x iling of Eeinstein and the confiscation of his property was Hitler's stupidest act. Einstein may yet be the winner.

Local .Drive to Commence April 10; More Workers
Using an unemotional, straightforward method of approach Leo Sehwarz painted. a complete picture of the condition and outlook for Jews of Europe at a mass meeting at the Centre last Thursday night.
He spoke for the Joint Distribution Committee as a forerunner to Vancouver's "Ejrtemal Welfare" drive which commences on April 10.
"When you give your donation this year," Dr. Sehwarz warned, "think of Austria and then double, triple or quadruple your giving!" "The Austrian situation, he pointed oiit, came so unexepectedlyr that JJJ.C. has no budget with which to meet the urgent needs of the 200,000 Jews there and an emergency budget has to be profided.
Although Dr. Sehwarz sees gradual ^jctenhination of the Jews of Germany and Austria, although he believes repressive dictatorships have come to the continent for "perhaps an epoch" —he still is not lacking in hope for the future of European Jewry. He pohits with greatest pride to tl^e un-cnj^h|d spirit (despite thehr miserable bddily cbriditibri of the S^OOiOW) Jews of Poland and believes that men and women of such stamina will ult-
imately find their salvation, sinjcte they have survived as a group for generations in spite of crudest persecution.
In a highly developed cultural life, in an intellectual awakening of Jewish masses the world over Dr. Sehwarz sees an answer to "the Jewish problem." The tremendous scope of JJD.C. work in all oppressed Jewish areas, a work which rehabilitates, returns but does not pauperize met with high praise from the speaker. "
The centre of the auditorium was filled to overflow to hear Dr. Sehwarz and among the audience was a goodly representation of non-Jewish friends. .
The speaker was presented by Rabbi S. Cass and thanked by Rabbi J. L. Zlotnick who commended his "ra^ tiorial" approach to the subject.
Mr. Norman Brown of the J.D.C. local committee outlined the objectives of the forthcoming drive and appealed for more workers. The objective of $3,500 Will not be hard to achieve, he believed, if there are sufficient collectors out. The funds are to be divided, this year, among three main outside agencies—JJ5.C. Club and Canadian Jewish Congress, and a number of smaller groups.
Mr. H. B. Kahn, regional chairman of J.D.C., presided.

''JEWISH FUTURE WILL BE DETERMINED IN AMERICA"
Can the Boors Be Opened?
America Raises New Hope for Jewry
-Dr. Joachim Prinz
WARNER BROTHERS TO SCREEN LIFE OF HAYM SOLOMON
Patriot of American Revolution
HOLLYWOOD (WNS)—The long talk of pictures depicting the life of Haym Salomon, Jewish patriot of the American Revolution moved a step nearer reality when Warner Brothers studio amiounced it would start production on the pictiu*e. It will be called "My Country First." It is understood that George Jessel has written the scenario. The picture will tell how Salomon served as an American spy and then loaned his entire fortune of $800,000 to George Washington.
Dr. Joachim Prinz, leader and spokesman of German Jewry, who lectijres here on Monday evening, April 18th, in the Oak Room of the Hotel Vancouver, was the first who had the courage, in the name of the Jews, to answer the attacks made upon them. The first public reply to Nazi allegations against the Jews was contained in his now-famous book, "Wir Juden" (We Jews), a political volume dealing with the Jewish problem which won the respect of even some officials of the Nazi Government,
Because of the courage and daring of his public speaking Prinz was frequently arrested. In July, 1933, while in the midst of a speech, he was seized by the S.A. (storm-troopers); At the funerals of murdered Jews he delivered addresses on the current situation which attracted nation-wide attention. In the years since Hitler came to power Prinz was the actual leader and spokesman of German Jewry. His articles in the Judische Rundschau, his speeches in the S3m-agogue and his political addresses at scores of mass meetings gave the tone to German Jewry's resistance to destruction.
In 1936 Prinz left the pulpit, after a struggle with reactionary elements in the community, to devote himself completely to politics. Immediately the Gestapo seized his passport and told him that his passport would be returned only when he left Germany. Thus he left Germany for America— "the land," he says, "Where the Jewish future will be determined."
Dr. Prinz will speak on "The Jews Under Hitler, and Their Futxure." Tickets for this lecture are now available in the Conununity Centre. His coming here has been made possible through the Men's Club of Congregation Beth Israel.

The call of the United States Government to 29 countries to join in an international effort to relieve the refugees from Austria and Germany by offering them havens of refugees has raised renewed hopes for the harassed Jews of Eastern and Central Europe. Mr. Manls-chewltz discusses the implications cf the Hull plan and what- its chances are for success. — THE
EDITOR.
Some 356,000 Jews in Czechoslovakia are on the brink of the precipice. The pressure which Hitler is bringing to bear from the North and South, the failiure of England to take a firm stand against the Nazification cf the last democratic country in Central Europe has doomed this Jewish community to a fate no less horrible than that which Austrian Jewry has had to endure since a Nazi army niarced on Vieima.
There are 356,000 Jews in Czecho-Siovakia, and of those some 10,000 are Jews who found refuge there after the coming to power of Hitler in 1933. WThat will happen to them? What happened to the 12,000 German Jews who had fied to Austria and were caught in the trap of Nazi invasion several weeks ago?
When Jews from Austria clamor for a chance to go to Poland to escape oppression, we are forced to conclude thai. Europe is dead as far as the Jewish people is concerned. President Roosevelt and Secretary Hull have done a courageous and humanitarian thing. They have asked the nations of the world to help rescue the Jews of Germany and Aus-t'-ia. But they have also made it clear that no existing immigration legislation is to be changed. And that means that a Europe that rushed to couble its frontier guard to prevent Jews from Austria from escaping in-^o their territory will hardly relax its border patrol or let down its barriers to refugee immigration.
What President Roosevelt and Secretary Hull have done is more of a li'gh-minded moral gesture which should serve to arouse the Jews of America rather than any other element or country to the emergency of the situation. For it is a sad falling we Jews have that only if an outsider

of high station points to our troubles will we take cognizance of them and buckle down to doing something about them. , .
And so the call which the United Slates Government has issued to the world is a heart-warming message of hope and good cheer rather than a concrete program of action. It conies like a great spiritual balm to the Jews of the entire world. To those who have already been crushed by the Frankenstein of Nazism it is a v.elcome ray of encouragement, of new hope, of light in a sea of darkness and despair. To those like us in America who are aware of the fact that we cannot isolate ourselves, nor insulate ourselves from the repercussions of the storm across the sea, it is a sign of a new era, of a reaffirmation of democracy, and of the ultimate triumph of Justice and equality under the courageous leadership of Americans such as Roosevelt and Hull.
Once again we see America in the role of the fearless champion of lib-wty, not as the satisfied, complacent bystander, too much concerned with his comfort to risk speaking up for the downtrodden and the oppressed.
But If we try to reduce these factors to a definite project of rescue and resettlement we come back inevitably to the same vexatious prob-. (Continued on Page 4)
NEW YORK (WNS-Palcor Agency)—Pointing to the availability of Palestine as a refuge for thousands of oppressed Jews in Central and Eastern Europe, the Zionist Organization of America, at the Hotel Pennsylvania, urged the United States Government to make representations the British Government for the lifting of the artificial barriers against the inunigration of Jews into Palestine and to allow larger immigration in accordance with the coun-trysesonomic absorptive capacity.
