UNTERMYER AND MONTEFIORE
Two distinguished Jews, each celebrated in d^erent fields of activity, one living in London and the other in New Yiork, celebrated their 80th birthday on June sixth. One is Saniiiel Unter-myer, internationally famous attorney and leaded of the anti-Nazi boycott. The other is Dr. Claude Montefiore, scholar, educator Bjxd exponent of Reform Judaism. The diifference between these two men is as great as the geographical space between London and New York. Untermyer spent all but the last decade of his life fighting some of the most sensational legal battles of his time. He never held aloof from the Jewish fold but at the same time he was never regarded as a Jewish leader. True he once served as a national chairman of the Palestine Foundation Fund. He came into the Jewish limelight again when he succeeded in forcing Henry Ford to retract and publicly apologize for his publication of "The Intemational Jew." Only in 1933, however, did Untermyer come into the picture as a key figure in Jewish affairs. It was then that he took the lead in mobilizing the nation in support of the anti-Nazi boycott.
Montefiore is of a different type. Retiring, unassuming and almost unknown to the masses of Jews, he played a vital role in post-war Jewish life. He vigorously t)pposed Zionism. He fought against the minority treaties. He crossed swords with the champions of traditional Judaism.—^He was denounced as an assimila-tionist. But the more violent the polemics against him, the more kindly he became. Montefiore is the perfect example of the Jewish scholar forced into a position of Jewish commiual leadership. He would have preferred to be a rabbi, secluded in his study. But circumstance compelled him to lead the movement for Reform Judaism in England^ind later.in Europe.
Montefiore and Untermyer have won many enemies. Both have lived a rich and useful life. Both have contributed much to the countries in which they live and to the Jewish people. To both we extend our greetings. May they live long and enjoy the retirement from active affairs which both have announced as they reached the four-score milepost;

PROGBESSnrES ARE ~ PBOGRESSrVE
Rolph M. Immell, executive director of the new La Follette party, National Progressives of America, denies categorically that he ever made the crack about there being "too many Jews on the'Wisconsin campus". . . , In.a letter to our boss Immell says "my Jewish secretary, who has been with me for almost ten years, and who is taking this letter, is much amused over the alleged attitude on the question of race".....
Judge S. B. Scheih of Madison, Wisconsin, an old friend of the La Fol-lettes, wrote a long letter to a friend in New York answering rumors that they are antl-Seiriites or potential Fascists. . . . This letter points out that the late Bob La Follette was, the leader of the fight to confirm the appointment of Brandeis to the Supreme Court. . . . That Bob's sons, Bob, Jr., and Phil, both had Jewish secretaries—Maurice Pasch and Gordon Sinykin. . . . That the La Fol-I6ttes are definitely not anti-Jewish or anti any other group. . . . That the much-discussed emblem of the La Follette party is pe'rfectly kosher, and that no Jew has been appointed to" public office in Wisconsin except by a governor affiliated with the La Fol-lettes. . . The Judge, incidentally, was one of the first signers of the new party's charter.
ABOUT PEOPLE
George Arliss, who has played the roles of Rothschild and Disraeli, is to be starred in Sam Goldwyn's film of race persecution in Austria, "The Exiles". ... The wealthy Sassoon family, which has produced poets, soldiers, rabbis, sportsmen, statesmen, industrialists and philanthropists, claims descent from Shephatiah, fifth son of King David. . . Its original name was Shoshan which means Lily . . .The race question will be the subject of that book which Herbert Seligman will write after he quits as press agent of the J.D.C. . . ^ Dr. J, Max Weis, educational director of World Peaceways, will return to the
rabbinate for one day when he officiates at the wedding of Beatrice Breidenbach, secretary to Estelle M. Sternberger, executive director of W.P.
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
We wonder whether there's anything to those rumors that Germany's withdrawal from the New York World's Fair was just a blind to fool the«bjwcotters, and that many large German firms are privately seeking concessions. . . . And, while we're in on inquisitive mood: Is it true that the Negro newspaper Dynamite, published in Chicago, is stirring up anti-Jewish feeling among the colored people because it is subsidized? .... And who's behind that mimeographed chain letter that's being circulated, asking the recipient to boycott the Schmeling-Louis fight and to get ten of his friends to do the same? . . . Latest Fascist outfit is something called the "Anti-Alien League of America," which is incorporated in California. . . . The rising tide of anti-Nsizi feeling hereabouts will mean the recall of Naei ambassador Dieck-hoff before long, . . Representative Martin Dies of Texas, who is to head the Congressional probe of un-American activities, fought the Ku Klux Klan tooth and nail. . . Nayer Tomid in the B'nai B'rith Messenger reveals that one of the Los Angeles' leading department stores (not Bullock's or The Broadway) refuses to handle Phyllis Bottome's anti-Nazi novel, "The Mortel Storm" . . . And our Los Angeles contemporary also tells us that a laborer on the Coast helped a self-confessed murderer bury his mother-in-law in a Mojave Desert grave because he thought he was aiding the Dragons, an offshoot of the Silver Shirts, which he wanted to join. ... If you want to show your appreciation of Tomas Mann's anti-Nazi stand by buying his German books you'll find yourself up against it. . . . The Nazis are only too willing to let the works of this German Nobel Prize winner fall into the out-of-print category, and no publisher has yet been found with the enterprise to republish Mann in German for the exile trade.

OALtSViTERAN "HOODLUMS"
Kuhn Announces Forthcoming Establishments of Ten Nazi Camps
ANDOVER, N.J. (WNS)—American war veterans were called "hoodlums," by August klapprott, New-Jersey leader of the German-American Bund, in a speech before 1,000 Nazis at Camp Nordland. He made the remark when he was told of rumors that 300 veterans were coming to stage a counter-demonstration. "We can take care of these hoodlums any time at all, let them come," he said. Fritz Kuhn, Bund leader, announced the forthcoming establishment of ten new Nazi camps, including four in New York State, which would bring the total to 32. A new green flag on which a small picture between the swastika and the American flag was intercrossed over the inscription *'Heil Hitler" made its first appearance at the meeting. Other camps, he said, are to be established in Florida, Minnesota and Indiana.
Monsignor Lavelle Denoun-* ces Expulsion of Jews as **Un-Christian"
NEW YORK (WNS)—"Total un-. willingness to tolerate persecution' anywhere forever" is the animating spirit of the Catholic Church, Monsignor Michael J. Lavelle, rector of St. Patrick's Cathedral, the largest Catholic church in America, and vicar-general of the Archdiocese of New York, declared in a Pentecost,-sermon delivered in the presence of. Cardinal Hayes. Moiisignor Lavelle
Denounced the expulsion "of -Jews from their native lands as "un-Chris-tian, declaring "respect fOr every' human being is a form of love within reach of all of us as is the total unwillingness to tolerate persecution' anywhere forever. We Catholics have established this in the United' States. One of the fundamental principles of our national. life is freedom of conscience. At present there is a great deal of religious persecution in other parts of the world,; in the Soviet, in the totalitariani states and of the Jews—driving them out of their-native land, making things so hard for them they can't stay.
' "That is totally against the spirit; of Pentecost. The Holy Ghost came upon the Apostles in the form of tongues of fire to show that faith must be propagated not only by the sword but by persuasion. May that spirit prevail everjrwhere," Monsignor Lavelle quoted with approval froim an address made by Lord Ma-caulay in the British House of Commons during a debate on the removal j of civil disabilities oh Jews, and said' that the following words of MacRulay express "the opinion of every right thinking human being: 'I firmly believe that in supporting the motion,* I am working for the best interests of the Christian religion. I would think I insulted that religion if I imagined for a moment she could not exist without persecuting others.'"
VIENNA (WNS)—Renewed picketing of Jewish shops by Nazi troopers as part of the revived anti-Jewish boycott of Vienna and an intensifica^ tiori of the Aryanization of Jewish business' have replaced the wholesale krrests of the previous weeks. Pickiets are poster before dozens of Jewish shops. Meanwhile the secretary of the local Aryanization Commission announced that he is now concentrating on the elimination of shops that compete with Aryan establishments.
FREUD QUITS VIENNA FOR LONDON
LONDON (WNS)—A rented house in London's Chelsea district is to be the new home of Dr. Sigmund Freud, 82-year-old Austrian-Jewish father of psychoanalysis, who has left Vienna for good. Stripped of all his possessions except some of his books and
a few manuscripts, the world-famous daddy, penniless and ill, quit the Vienna that had been his home since childhood to finish out his days in London, where his son, Ernst, is an architect. B^eud's daughter, Anna, who has been associated with him in his researches, accompanied him. Reports that he might later go to New York were discounted by his friends here, who said he was too sick for the journey. Freud is said to be de-.termio^d.tp, Qs^ffipl?,te„his, lagt jxx^ov-. work, a psychoanalysis of the Old Testament. Freud had been under house arrest since the Nazi conquest of Austria. .
Some thirty odd thousand Jews won decorations for distinguished service.during the world war.

Jersey City Denies
Inviting Nazi Bunds to Americanism Parade
JERSEY CITY (WNS)—"Such a statement is false," said Frank Eg-gons, private secretary of Mayer Prank Hague, when told that Fritz Kuhn, national leader of the Ger-
man-American Bund, had announced to his followers at Camp Nordland 'that he had received and accepted invitation for members of the Bund to march in uniform in Mayor Hague's Americanism parade on June 6th. Kuhn refused to say whe-_ther the invitation came from Mayor _Hagrue or his subco-dinates, but said
he could have as many as 20,000 Bundsmen in line. Kuhn's statement was also denied by Col. Kelly, secretary to Governor A. Harry jMoore, who was to be grand marshal of the parade," Colonel Kelly said "no one but Americans carrying the Stars and Stripes will be permitted in the parade, which is for patriotic purposes. No Nazis will be allowed in our parade." He denied emphatically that either Mayor Hague or anyone else in Jersey City had invited Kuhn and his Nazis.
SCHOOL PUPILS IN REICH DECLINE BY
Decline Attributed to Emigration and Segregation
BERLIN (WNS) — A decline of nearly 4,000 in the number of Jews attending the public elementary schools in Germany is revealed in school statistics made public here. The figures show that Jewish at-' tendance dropped from 17,134 in 1936 to 13,681 in 1937, the decline being attributed to emigration and segregation. At the same time the number of private Jewish schools increased from 60 to 76.
