THE PRICE OF ANNEXATION IS WAR
The killing of Rumania's Fascist Iron Guard leader Codreanu has set the stage for Hitler's "Drang Nach Osten" (March to the East) and is the excuse the Nazis have waited for to Nazify Rumania in much the same manner as was accomplished in Austria. The oflScial organ of Propaganda Minister Goebbels has openly begun an attack on King Carol making his association with Magda Lupescu a particular object on which to heap its scorn and invective.
Rumania was inclined to be friendly with Germany, feeling that it was by far the better course to follow but with the dismemberment of Czechoslovakia, Nazi co-operation with Rumania became somewhat cooler. Rumania is in no better position than was Czechoslovakia having annexed part of Hungary following the World War.
There are in Rumania today 800,000 Jews who have long felt the terror of anti-Semitism. In the event that Rimiania is added to Hitler's "Sphere of Influence" the problem confronting World Jewry today and the work of the Evian Commission will become doubly perplexing and beyond the endurance of a patient world.
In much the same manner that a person may bite off too big a morsel for proper digestion and for his own good it is evident that Hitler will go too far in his policy of annexing territory for a great German Empire in Europe. He may have overcome the annexation of Czechoslovakia and may possibly get away with Nazification of Rumania but his designs on the Ukraine will definitely be disastrous for him.

PROPAGANDA DRIVE OONTINUES STRONG
Propaganda of "enlightment" on the Jewish issue was ordered by Goebbels' department who apparently felt that large sections of the German people were still sympathetic and- needed to be further convinced of the justice of the nation's anti-Semitic measures.
Motion pictures, the radio and the press are being used to ridicule the Jews and point out Jewish misdeeds elsewhere in the world.
It was learned the Jews were being required to pay "voluntary contributions" amounting to as much as 350,000 marks ($140,000) to obtain passports to leave Germany. This has Ijeen stopped, however, since the government opposes this type of private profiteering.
600 CHILDREN
LEAVE VIENNA
By FHINSAS J. BIBON NATZI STUFF
• Rumors on the vom Rath shooting plot are getting hotter and hotter. . . . The latest is that the French secret police have actual proof that the whole thing was a put-up job to furnish a pretext for further persecution of the • Jews. ... At the moment, well-informed sources whisper that the Nazis are perfecting plans for another "outrage," this time to be pinned on the Catholics and to supply what Hitler will call justification for a billion-dollar fine to be levied against the Catholic Church in Germany. . ■; . Five years ago 89 per cent of the school children of Munich attended Catholic parochiat schools. . . Today every one of them is forced to attend Nazi-conducted schools. . , The Nazi racial laws are coming in handy for Mrs. Raimund von Hof-mannsthal, the former Muriel Astor. . . . The non-Aryanism of her husband, a subject of Hitler and the son of the great Austrian poet Hugo von Hofmannsthal, will make it easy for her to, obtain the divorce she wants from him, as she is suing him in an Austrian court. . . . Imagine the embarrassment of the Voelkischer Bev-bachter when it discovered the serial it was advertising concerned a war fought on German soil. . . , Publication plans were quickly changed, although the novelist is a 100 per cent Aryan and a Nazi army officer, for it is against the Nazi philosophy even to imagine an enemy setting foot on the land of the Holy Terror. . . .
FROM FOREIGN PARTS
France is having" her troubles with Adolf and Benito, but that hasn't kept the Academy of France from electing Jerorne Tharaud, the country's chief Hitler-lover, as one of its members. . . . Keep your eye peeled for some torrid dispatches from Spain in the New York Times. . Sam Spewack, crack correspondent and ace playwright, will be sending them over, . . . Although German trade with the Latin-American nations has been making some rapid strides, the bull-in-the-china-shop tactics of the Nazis aren't succeeding any too well in our sister republics. .. . Before the month is over a couple more of them will ask their envoys to return home from Berlin. . . Which reminds us that a big-cheese Nazi has just been sent to South America, presumably to make matters worse. . , . His record includes an active part in the blood-purge of four years ago, and his name is Adolf Marx. . . . And if you think that's a queer name for a Nazi, just consider that if Hitler and Mussolini were
Jewish they'd be known as Velvele and Baruch. ...
BFPEBCUSSIONS
Emanuel Lasker, former chess champion of the world, who now lives in New York, has written a book that will create a sensation in Jewish circles. . . . He has worked out a plan to remove all the Jews of Central Europe, Poland and Rou-mania to temporary training camps in Yugoslavia, and to establish an international employment bureau which will distribute them among various countries as openings present themselves and without interfering with the economic balance of those lands... . While TWA disclaims disowning Lindbergh although its letterheads no longer carry the phrase "The Lindbergh Line." the aviator's friends are protesting that his interest in Naziland is purely scientific and aeronautical and signifies no Nazi leanings. .. . All of which hasn't prevented New York audiences from booing his picture in recent newsreels. . . . New Mexico's Indians are getting sick and tired of this Nazi stuff, which is causing so many local firms, which for years have been using the ancient Indian good luck symbol, to drop the swastika because of its political implications. . . . Doff your hat to Dr. Alex Strasberg of the Jewish General Hospital of Montreal, who refused permission to the Deutsche Chirurgische Gesellschaft of Berlin to reprint an important article of his from the Canadian Medical Association Journal. . . . And clap hands for Fred El-ven of the Cincinnati Freie Presse, who refused a Hitler-preferred medal. .. . Some other Americans please copy. . , .
THIS AND THAT
Nazi Ambassador Hans Dieckhoff may think he's in a spot because he'll have to explain the American view on Nazism to the Furore—but just fancy the position of Adolf's girl
Vienna (WNS)—Five hundred bf the six hundred children removed from Vienna by the Children's Committee in The Netherlands, under the direction of Mme. G. WijsmuUer-Meijer, official representative of the Committee, have been taken to England, where they will be cared for by the Society of Friends until they can be sent to other countries. Ranging in age from 4 to 17, in many cases they are children of people in the Dachau concentration camp. The remaining 100 will be sent to The stein strasse.

this I find my comfort. Everything will be all right again fifty years from now, I say. I should like to be walking Unter den Linden, for things in Berlin fifty years from now. I shall walk safely Unter den Linden, for things will be good again. Yes, Mr. Arbuthnot. I shall approach a policeman.
"Please, sir, be so good as to direct me to Einstein-strasse."
He raises his cap politely. The next bus will take me to Einstein strasse, he says. . . . "Yes, he was a great man, this Einstein, one of the greatest of our Germans." ... He tells me I mustn't miss the Einstein planetarium which stands on Einstein strasse. And the house in which Einstein lived is a national museum. . . . "You will see his violin and his desk."
"But this isn't thinking," laughed Mr. Arbuthnot. "You're really dreaming—^not thinking."
Oh, Mr. Arbuthnot, a Jew thinks in dreams and by dreams makes his travail endurable. Yes, it is very pleasant to think of Einstein strasse in Berlin,' especially when you know how history delights in satiric vengeances. There will be an Eistein strasse in Berlin in the year 1985. I'll give you a bet on that, Mr. Ar-butnhot,
A one-sided bet: I bet, Mr. Arbuthnot, that in 50 years Jews will be honored in Einstein strasse in Berlin, I bet you a trip to Berlin in the year 1985. We shall walk together Unter den Linden and together go to Ein-
Netherlands and cared for there until more permanent arrangements can be made for their re-settlement —possibly in the United States.
RALFOUR'S HOME TURNED OVER TO REFUGEE CHILDREN
London (WNS) — Whittingehame House, Scottish house of the late Earl Balfour, father of the declaration inspiring hope for the Jewish national home in Palestine, has been offered as a haven for refuge children from Germany. The gesture, made by Lord Balfour's nephew, Viscount Traprain, who inherited the estate, will afford an opportunity for more than 200 children to be trained for agricultural life in Palestine. The Jewish community in the east of Scotland will transport and maintain the children at the Balfour estate.
GERMAN CHILDREN TO RE^iSCUSSED
Jerusalem (WNS) — Facilitating the immigration of German-Jewish children into Palestine will be the topic of discussion at a meeting* scheduled to be held between William Dennis Battershill, Chief Secretary of the Palestine Government, and a delegation of the Yishuv held by representatives of ' the Jewish Agency and the Vaad Leumi.

Is it just a coincidence that it was right after Leni's visit to the screen capital that Charlie Chaplin announced a change in his plan to caricature Hitler in his next film? . . . And, for that matter, even if he makes his burlesqued dictator a Ruritanian or a Graus-tarkian, how can he help looking like Hitler unless he gives up his famous mustache? . . . The Hollywood Hof-brau, once proudly labeled the town's only German beer garden, now calls itself "The Original Swiss Restaurant". .. . Wonder whether Kuhn,

"And what of the Nazis?" asked Mr. Arbuthnot. "A power like Nazis is not to be laughed off in a dream. And Hitler?"
Mr. Arbuthnot thought Hitler (because he is so strong today) would be stainding powerfully in bronze statuary and granite In the year 1985; but Mr, Arbuthnot is only a man from yesterday who hasn't been getting around for 2000 years).
No, Mr. Arbuthnot, we shall ask in vain for Hitler . , . you and I walking Unter den Linden in Berlin in the year 1985, Where is the Brown House, pir? we shall inquire of the policeman.
"The Brown House? What do you mean, the Brown house?"
"We mean Hitler's house. That's what they called it—^the Brown House,"
"Ach . . .heI Hitler! Only the old people remember him,"
You see, Mr. Arbuthnot, Hitler will be quite forgotten and Goebbels will be like an evil breath from a medieval tomb. You and I will walk together enjoying abdominal laughter at the whole thing.
Mr, Arbuthnot said it was lovely that a Jew could be so brave with dreams, but it was evident that he was unable to share my vision. I was a Jew dreaming only what my poor, tired eyes wanted to see.
This isn't a crazy fantasy, Mr. Arbuthnot, If you had lived as long as I you would know how true it is. It is as true as justice and retribution which plod on leaden feet to strike down the power of evil with iron hands, I have seen this in all my( days, Mr. Arbuthnot and I shall see it again. Yes, it is certain I shall see it.
The policeman will say to us, "I've heard tell of Hitler, but you should see the Einstein planetarium on Einstein strasse. It is like a beautiful; night tuider the stars there,"
I could see that Mr, Arbuthnot was pitying me, as if to say, "How sad that a people so afflicted have only long-range dreams to comfort them . , , fantasies springing from despair."
Yes, Mr. Arbuthnot, that's all we have left, but it's very big and important; it is the pledge of hvunan experience which knows that Nazis are not permanent. What has Hitler got? What's his future? What Is his power that stands on a heap of corpses, depravity, falsehood and hate?
Mr. Arbuthnot thought I was looking too much at morality, not enough at the reality of force.
It's a bet, Mr. Arbuthnot. You will go with me to Berlin in the year 1985 for a visit to Einstein strasse, the Einstein planetarium, the Einstein national museum, and we shall laugh at force fallen into oblivion.
This is what a Jew likes to think about when he has a moment to think amid the hour's pain.
Mr. Arbuthnot made the poignant suggestion that both of us will be dead by 1985. .
It's a bet, nevertheless, Mr. Arbuthnot. Our ghosts shall go together to Berlin.
"We might take Hitler's ghost along," said Mr. Arbuthnot.
Yes, we'll take him along to Einstein strasse. . . . "Look, Herr Hitler! Einstein strasse!"
CATHOLIC PAPER SEES RISE OF ANTI-SEMITISM
New York (WNS)—The Catholic monthly magazine "Queens Work" published in St. Louis "viewed with alarm" the rise of anti-Semitism in the United States and warned that any attack on the Jews is un-Chris-tian. Father Daniel-.A. Lord, editor, wrote: "It would be a terrible thing if Catholics through their hatred of Jews aligned themselves with frankly brutal pagans who, though they seem for the moment to be concen-. trating their malicious energies against the Jews, have not forgotten to take an occasional sideswipe at Catholics and who will, if ever they succeed in getting rid of the Jews, turn their fullest destructive hatred against the Catholics." The writer asserted that Jewish supremacy in various fields was the result of "merit and willingness to work;"
GANDHI URGES RESISTANCE FOR JEWS
Bombay (WNS)—"If ever there could be a justifiable war in the name of humanity, a war against Germany—to prevent the wanton persecution of a whole race—^would be completely justified," said Mohandas K. Gandhi, writing in his weekly newspaper. He called Germanjr's anti-Semitic campaign without parallel in history and suggested that the victims try his own method of passive resistance, "If I were a Jew," he said, "and were born in Germany and earned my livelihood there, I would claim Germany as my home, even as the tallest Gentile may, and challenge him to shoot me or cast me into a dungeon. I would refuse to be expelled or to submit to discriminating treatment,"

day night. There could have been a better attendance. Many prominent members were conspicuous by their absence. However, those who' were there had a humming time of it. Perhaps the highlight of the evening was the Lambeth Walk. And believe it or not, the stars of that exhibition were our dear and lovable friends, Harry and Mrs, Kemp. They had the crowd on their toes. I think everyone else stopped to watch them. Certainly they were the life of the party.
There is no doubt whatever that the Nazi Government are going to make other nations pay through the nose in order to make it possible for German Jews to leave Germany. It is just a form of blackmail. I append the latest plan drafted or about to be, by the Nazi Government which reads:
BERLIN—Plans are being studied for making Jewish emigration possible in return for increased German exports, it was disclosed by a prominent Nazi editor here. Although he gave no specific details, the editor said: "Jews need foreign exchange to get out. We haven't any. Hence other nations must supply it. These nations, however, will insist that Germany should repay these sums from possessions left behind by German Jews. There is only one way we can repay—through goods. . How great a quantity of additional German goods are foreign nations prepared to buy from Germany? They can have all 650,000 Jews and half-Jews if they will give us enough export orders," the Nazi editor declared.
In regards to children, the Nazi Government are letting them go in large numbers, as I presume they don't want to have to maintain them. The tragic point about it is that these innocent little things will per' haps never see their loved ones any more. A. report from France says:
More than 800 children have bee removed from Germany and seife^t It'rance and England where ne homes await them. The children' ranging in age from 7 to 17, wei allowed to take with them one mar' (forty cents) each and only such pe-sonal belongings as could be carri in a small handbag. Most of the~ will never again see their pare~ since there is little hope of their fo lowing the children into France an England, and the children certain! will not return to Nazi Germany, great many are children of Jews w' had been expelled from Germany had died during the riots or in co centration camps. Most of them we from Berlin, Munich and Vienna.
