New terror alert issued
Security sources are warning of a new wave of terror attacks, including car and suicide bombings, inside Israel and the territories, despite Palestinian Authority Chainnan Yasser Arafat's reported decision to implement the ceasefire.
Bcefed-up security measures were implemented at the entrance to Ben-Gurion Airport and in the terminals Monday following a car-bomb alert.
The renewed warnings and heightened security coincided with the killing of an Israel Defence Force officer in a roadside bomb attack in the Mount Hebron region and a failed suicide car-bomb attack in the Gaza Strip early Monday.
Capt Shai Shalom Cohen was killed near Hadora'im when a relatively sophisticated vwrc-oper-atcd roadside bomb was detonated alongside his unar-mored jeep. Cohen, 22, of Pardess Hanna, was mortally wounded by shrapnel wounds in his head and his driver was lightly hurt Initial inquiries into the attack found that the explosive device was similar to a type used by Hezbollah against the IDF and South Lebanese Army.
Arafat and Tenet plan
The Palestinian Authority made a decision to take diligent steps to combat violence this week, but it has not succeeded. Foreign Minister Sliimon Peres told a meeting of the Labor faction Monday.
Peres said that Palestinian officials told Israel, and PA Chairman Yasser Arafat informed Central Intelligence Agency director George Tenet, of the decision to implement new policies, including arresting terrorists, giving clear orders to their forces to fight terror and implementing Tenet's plan.
Peres said the United States backs Israel's position that the seven-day cooling-off period proposed by Tenet has not yet begun, because the Palestinians have not stopped the violence.
However, he said Israel has also not kept its promise to avoid worsening relations with the ' Palestinians. He criticized the decision to raze illegally built Arab houses in Shuafat and said that, had he known about it in advance, he would have prevented the demolitions because they harm Israel's image abroad.
Nasrallah: pay price
Israel will not receive any information about the condition of the four hostages being held by Hezbollah wiUiout paying an appropriate price, the oi;ganization's
leader Sheikh Hassan Nasrallah declared in Beirut Monday night The Hezbollah leader made clear, however, that the organization is willing to conduct an exchange deal provided Israel pays the price demanded. Nasrallah is demanding the release of prisoners as pre-payment for information regarding the condition of the three soldiers and Israeli businessman Col. (res.) Elhanan Tannenbaum who was snatched a few days after the soldiers were kidnapped, apparently while he was on a trip abroad.
14 homes demolished
Jerusalem municipality bulldozers razed 14 houses Monday that are being illegally built in the Shuafat refugee camp in the northern part of Uie dty. Backed by several hundred border policemen and security officials, municipality bulldozers took nearly four hours to demolish the structures.
The Arab owners of 25 uninhabited buildings in the neighborhood had received demolition orders fhjm dty hall on Sunday.
Intermittently, dozens of Palestinian residents, backed by a group of far-left Israelis and human ri^ts workers, threw stones at police. Police arrested four Israeli human rights activists and a Palestinian resident for causing a disturbance.
Jerusalem Mayor Ehud Olmert called the illegal building going on in the city "a national plague" and stressed that no one was made homeless by the demolitions. "We are not talking about poor people who do not have a roof over their heads," he said.
Turkey welcomes offer
Ankara
Faced with a growing Iranian missile threat, "Turkish defence officials have welcomed an Israeli offer to help set up a joint missile-defence umbrella featuring the Arrow anti-ballistic system.
In a one-day visit to Turkey Monday, Defence Minister Binyamin Ben-Eliczcr said it was agreed to seek U.S. approval to sell the.Arrow anti-ballistic rockets and the powerful Green Pine radar system to Turkey.
As Israel's second-most important strategic ally after the United States, Ben-Eliezer said he told liis Turkish counterparts that Israel expects Iran to get hold of nuclear weapons in 2005, and Teheran has recently completed successful tests for the 1,300-km range Shihab 3 surface-to-surface missile. □
