JEWISH WESTE^RN BULLETIN
ETHEL BARRYMORE IN PERSON AT STRAND THEATRE
Ethel Barrymore in "Whiteoaks" will highlight the dramatic season in Vancouver with a three-day engagement Thursday, Friday, Saturday, April 20-21-22 at the Strand Theatre. "Whiteoaks" is the drama of the famed in fiction Canadian family of that name celebrated by Mazo de la Roche in a series of novels known as the "Jalna Books". Miss de la Roche also made the dramatization, which ran for 966 performances at the Playhouse in Lrondon, England, and in which Miss Barrjrmore is now touring following a highly successful season in New York.
"Whiteoaks of Jalna", published in 1929, topped the list of "best sellers" for that year, while the other four books of the Jalna series are still among the most popular on the library shelves. The Whiteoaks are that group of hardy Canadians who are, individually and collectively, no less fantastic than the Sangers, immortalized in 'The Constant Nymph". Dominating all of them, of course, is Gran Adeline Whiteoak (Ethel Barrymore). With the authority of her 101 years, she welds them into a unified force. Sometimes she brings them to obedience by terrifying them. Again she summons their fierce pride of family, but always she commands.
Mail orders are now being taken at the Strand, and the box office sale will commence Monday, April 3.

THOUSANDS OF JEWS FACE STARVATION IN BOHEMIA-MORAVIA
PRAGUE, March 24. (JTA)—The threat of starvation added today to the panic prevailing among the estimated 160,000 Jews of Bohemia-Moravia since its occupation by the German army.
The situation was acute in Fi^gue, where the only Jewish soup kitchen and all Jewish charity institutions have been shut down by the Nazis. Many Jews dependent upon relief are facing starvation. Since all Jewish bank accounts have been stopped, wealthier Jews are prevented from aiding the needy. The coming of Passover makes the position especially tragic, since there are no facilities for provision of matzoth which is usually brought in fro^n Slovakia.
Meanwhile, all Jewish institutions and newspapers have been closed by the Nazis. Jewish leaders seized shortly after tfie occupation are still under detention. Marie Schmolka, head of the Refugee Relief Organization, and her Jewish assistants who were arrested in the first days of the occupation and subsequently released were re-arrested today. That preparations had been made long before the occupation is indicated by t)xe fact that the Nazis are working from lists in making their arrests. Today they came to arrest a Jewish editor named Lebenhart, who has been dead for the past ten years.
JjBxge numbers of Jews are being rounded up nightly and committed to concentration camp, Jews in the vicinity of the Altneu Synagogue are afraid to remain in their homes at night because of reports that wholesale arrests of Jews in that district will soon be launched. ,
Many Jews released after detention by the Gestapo bear the marks of brutal maltreatment. Some have come back with their features almost unrecognizable.
The Nazi authorities yesterday prohibited the disposal of Jewish realty, by sale, lease or outright gift All Jewish shops in Pragrue have been closed and all Jewish employes of non-Jewish shops have been dismissed. Jewish employes of the Prague Municipality have also been deprived of their posts.

PASSOVER SERVICE BROADCAST C.B.S. SUNDAY, APRIL 2nil
A condensation of the service for Jewish Passover is to be heard over CBS, Sunday, April 2, under auspices of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (WABO-CBS. 2:30 to 3:00 p.m., e.s.t.). Pacific Coast time 10:30 to 11:00 a.m.
The service is to be conducted by Dr. Samuel H. Goldenson, rabbi of Temple Emami-El, 1 East 65th St., New York. A choir of six men and women, under direction of Lazar Saminsky, widely-known composer; the chant by Cantor Moshe Rudinow, and a cello solo by Dr. Felix Mendelssohn, kin and namesake of the great composer, are among the program highlights.
Pesach or Passover, begins at sundown, Monday, April 3, and continues until sundown, Tuesday, April 11. It is, according to Dr. Goldenson, "the feast of freedom, the holiday which celebrates redemption of the children of Israel from the Egyptian house of bondage. Every year on this occasion, members of the Jewish household are bidden to think of themselves as if they had been enslaved, so they may become more sympathetic with others who are in trouble."
The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee gives aid to distressed Jews overseas.

REVISED HUNGARIAN SILL DEFINES JEWISH STATUS
BUDAPEST (WNS)—The revised anti-Jewish bill, embracing a more liberal definition of a Jew and extending the scope of exemptions, was brought before parliament for a point-to-point debate. A second reading of the measure, which would limit participation of Jews in Hungary's economic and cultural life, was adopted by the Chamber of Deputies. Under the amendments Jews are defined as persons belonging to the Jewish religion or having at least one parent or two grandparents belonging to the Jewish religion when the new law goes into effect.
