THANKS TO CANADIAN LEGION Niow and agam news filters through from some part of the country about the over aggressive activities of the Nazi Bund Movement. Country places it seems are more fertile ground for the development of the insidious Bund. And it would flourish to an alarming extent in these outside areas but for the watchful eyes of the Canadian Legion and American Legion in their respective countries. The Legion has posts in every small place, are ever watchful for subversive forces who are determined to undermine democracy and good government at every possible chance. Coming nearer home the Nazi Bund Movement had been making great headway in some parts of the Okanagan Valley. We learn that the Canadian Legion has been watching the situation closely and at the opportune moment exposed the ramifications of the Bund. Strongly bacldng the Legion on their stand are the Okanagan Municipal Association which passed intelligent common-sense resolutions dealing with the situation at their meeting at Eam-loops, and the Penticton Herald which published a strong, well-worded editorial on the subject. The Canadian Legion and the American Legion are to be commended on the valuable work they are doing, and deserve the thanks of all citizens who respect law and order, .
PROPAGANDA DEVICES
Anti-Semitic rabble-rousers in France have devised a new and ingenious method of executing their campaign against Jews. Under a recent law, forbidding anti-Jewish agitation, it is no longer permissible for them to shout "Down with the Jews!" It became necessary to resort to a different but equally effective approach. And that approach, crystallized in a document signed by "Celi" a pseudonym of a French anti-Semitic journalist, is to shout "Long live the Jews," "Down with the Frenchmen!" The document
: propbses the establishment of a central organization for anti- Semites in the country. But since anti-Semitism has became accepted generally as a Nazi-Fascist product—incongruous with the intrinsic nature of the French—"Cel" stipulates that the propagandist must not look like a Fascist lOr a Nazi, but rather like an honest
^ F^nchman, and should be able even to appear as a Jew of circum-
; stance.
In the guise of an honest Frenchman it would be his job to visit small French tradesmen and persuade each that it is the Jew
V who is responsible for all his troubles. Thus, by stirring up indig-nati(»ii on the part of Frenchmen to propaganda apparently instigated by Jews but actually by Nazis, this clever «tunt, they hope, may eventually create sufficient hostility among French people to
f ^insur^ a^eleom^ reception for the Fnelaer osrv^P^^Day.^ ^: The Nazis are diligent in their work. In an effort to counteract French government measures to combat anti-Semitism, Gier-many is flooding Alsace-Lorraine with anti-Semitic letters addressed to French citizens in that territpryj and many Alsatians are reported to be receivihg envelopes containing anti-Jewish caricatures and leaflets.
One wonders what a great Germany might.have evolved out of the application of all this craft, ingenuity, and energy to constructive purpose instead of providing historians with the further complexity, when delving into dust, of being met with a Nazi shout, **Long iiive the Jews!"

TEST FOR FREEDOM , Nazi authorities in the "protectorate" of Bohemia-Moravia this week staged a complete reversal of policy with regard to emigration of Jews from the territory where up to now Jewish applications for emigration permits were denied. Jews have been eager to leave the former Czecho-Slovak territory and it is known that at least 10,0D0 persons had applied unsuccessfully for permission to leave. With the opening this week of an official emigration bureau in Prague, entrusted with tasks similar to those of the newly organized Union of Reich Jews in Berlin, it is expected that a Jewish exodus will soon be^, adding considerably to the difficulties of Jewish relief organizations and colonization possibilities.
Again thousands of human beings will be robbed of their possessions and then forced out of their homeland for no reason except that the Nazis don't like them. This situation is true in every country over which the Nazi shadow has fallen. The policy of robbing and then expelling human beings on a trumped-up "racial principle" is to be repeated in Bohemia-Moravia. Poland has already made demands of the Intergovernmental Committee on Political Refugees to discuss the question of Jewish emigration. Italy is constantly tightening up its ouster laws. There is every reason to believe that other countries such as Rumania and Hungary inay eventually add to the enormity of the refugee probem.
The problem is now one of humanity, for if there is not left in the world enough respect for elementary human rights and the digrit-T^ of the human spirit to make a place elsewhere for these ; unwanted refugees, then the shadow of despotism and dictatorship hangs over all thd world. The; refugees from Nazi persecution are a test of the vitality of the values of freedom and humanity. It is up to us to find means of surmounting that test.
JEWISH EX-SOLDIERS CONSCRIPTED FOR lABOR^PROJEGTS
LONDON (WNS)—A late dispatch from Prague reported that the Gestapo has placed Dr. Stahlecker commander of Reichsprotector von Neu-rath's special police, in charge of the newly created Central Emigration Office in the "Protectorate" of Bohemia-Moravia.
Information from Bratislava revetted that 500 Jewish soldiers and officers expelled from the Slovakian army were ordered on road construction jobs and other public works at Rencin, Neusohl and Presov. It is reported that the ex-soldiers, formed into three labor groups, are subjected to ill-treatment and forced to exist on starvation rations.

Again, it is my pleasure as representative for Vancouver Auxiliary, to report on the 17th Annual Convention, B'hai B'rith Women's Grand Lodge No. 4, held jointly with the Men's Grand Lodge at their 76th Convention of the District at San Francisco, July 16th-20th, Accompanying myself were Mrs. S. Nemetz and Mrs. I. L. Kostman. Mrs. S. Nemetz has again been re-elected to serve on the Advisory Board of the Women's Grand Lodge.
Prom the moment of arrival to the end of \the sessions i every moment was packed with interest and enjoyment. In charge of arrangements was Mrs. Goldie Speyer, a former Past Grand President.
I would quote at this time, Mrs. Lenore Underwood's remarks, former Grand President taken from "Emanuel" (San Francisco Jewish Journal).
"The City of San Francisco has opened up its gates and the people their hearts to welcome the men a;nd women attending the Convention of B'nai B'rith. Members, friends, husbands and wives, will assemble in our city to discuss past events and to formulate plans for the coming year."
"We meet because our drganization was formed to aid the men. By meeting together with them we can \mite our efforts jaiid intensify our aid."
"Our people have had many problems presented to them this past year and have bent their every, effort to help. The entire civilization has suffered. This is a world wide disturbance and we, as a pairt of this civilization have suffered with our brethren."
"The women of the district have done constructive work in helping to build the minds and bodies of indji-viduals, offering a helping hand and' new hopes for the future. Much of our effort has been given to bringin| about a better understanding among all people of the earth.
It was noted that there were al^ most two hundred delegates registered making this the largest assemblage of any Convention.
This year, the Vice-President Elizabeth Harris, at the joint opening ceremonies of both Lodges handed tq the President of the Men's Lodge a cheque fOr over $4200.00 for wider-scopej an increase of $900.00 as con^-•pared to last year. And at one of the business sessions after listening to the inspired and enlightening: rer niarks of Richard E. Gutstadt, National Director, Anti-Defamation League, Mrs. Underwood pledged with the assistance of all Auxiliaries, even greater support to Widerscope.
Mr. Gutstadt went on to Inforhi his listeners that there were somil eight himdred Fascist organizations functioning in American life; that there were over 14,000 Anti-Semetio documents on the Anti-Defamatioi| ishelves at headquarters. He further stated that only a small portion of' what actually occurs appears on the surface. Our problem was the problem of the American people and that v/e- must use our every resoiu:ce to help economic disturbances to the extent of making sacrifices to the end that we may preserve the heritage not only of the Jews but of the American peapie.
Lessons in civilization must be so deeply impressed so as to immunize the various foreign groups from propaganda against the country they dwell in. And that while all lodges had ceased activities for the summer months, neither Hitler or the Bimd were taking a vacation. Germany was spending $2,500,000.00 a month iii America to destroy us as compared to $300,000.00 spent on Anti-Defamation in 1939.
Mrs. Underwood in her report for the year showed the membership of the Women's Lodge, District No. 4, standing at 6484 members with a net gain of 1,497 new members; also the formation of six new auxiliaries and numerous Junior groups.
Outstanding newly organized auxiliary was the one at Beverley Hills with a chartered membership of over four hmidred members. This auxt iliary is headed by Carmel Myers (former Motion Picture Star), and
"GESTAPO" DIRECTS IMMIGRATION BU~ REAU IN PRAGUE
LONDON (WNS)—With the establishment this week of an official emigration bureau in Prague under the direction of the Gestapo (secret police) it is believed that a forced emigration of Jews from the "protectorate" of Bohemia-Moravia will take place shortly, completely reversing the Gestapo's emigration policy in the "protectorate." Reliable information from Prague reported that a Jewish emigration bureau, including a special department of the Palestine Emigration Office and the Prague Jewish Communitsr's emigration bureau, was opened at the same time to co-operate with the Gestapo office. The Jewish emigration bureau, given official recognition, will be conducted along the same lines as the newly organized 'TJnioh of Reich Jews" (Reichsvereinigung) in Berlin and will be entrusted with such tasks as: 1) Organizing Jewish emigration from the "protectorate" involving negotiations with foreign governments; 2) taking over private Jewish schools and establishing a Jewish community school system in view of the fact that Jews are no longer admitted to German and Czech schools; and 3) supervise welfare work for all needy Jews throughout the "protectorate."
It was also reported that a branch of the Jewish emigrration bureau was opened at Bruenn in Moravia which will function along the lines of the emigration office established in Vienna. Dr. Frianz Weidmann was named by the Gestapo to head the office at Bruenn:
mic ills of Slovakia and for the failure of the government to raise a loan for relief. These accusations were being aired at a session of the Slovak Cabinet, during -viiiich Propaganda Minister Sano Mach reported to the Cabinet that Jews had boycotted the loan, intended to be used to purchase

So much for the bushiess end of the sessions.
I might mention the enjoyable luncheon held at the Mark Hopkhis Hotel when those present were enthralled with the unusual talent of two Filipino youthful artists, a brother and sister named Star. The brother, age thirteen, an accompllsheki violinist, had just completed amotion picture starring Jascha Heifltz in "They shall have music," and before one had quite recovered from this treat, his sister, age ten, commenced to steal the show. She had just terminated a six weeks' engagement with George Jessel's show in New York, and her rendition of several vocal operatic numbers left one speechless with praise over the nature and bhrdlike quaUty of her voice, which was afterwards almost exceeded by her rendition of several piano selections. Tliis.musical treat will long be remembered by those privileged to hear them.
The Cultural program held the same evening (Tuesday), was most interesting. Sol Silverman, publisher Emanu-El and Jewish Journal, spoke on. "Roads to Democracy." And a further interesthig featture of the evening yas the Good Will Trio, composed of three students of University of California, comprising Jewish, Catholic and Protestant belief, belonghig to the University of Religious Conference aiming towards education in religious tolerance and understanding.
The banquet and dance held Wednesday evening in the Terrace Room, Fairmont Hotel, wound up the business sessions. Acting as Master of Ceremonies was the Movie actor, Lionel Stander, and a,mongst other well-known artists was the accomp-Ushed Rubinoff.
With the B'nai B'rith Day at the Fair at Treasure Island, another convention was brought to a close— next year to meet at San Diego.
My report would be incomplete without paying personal tribute to the San Francisco Auxiliary for their efforts in making the stay of the delegates and visitors an imusually enjoyable one. Theirs was a very difficult task in attempting to cope with a convention that assumed gigantic proportions. After making every allowance, I was informed that the number expected had actually doubled itself.
Also, the memory of attending a convention under the brilliant and charming chairmanship of Mrs. Lenore Underwood, outgoing Grand President, will long remain with me. Under her intelligent leaderdiip great strides have been made in the Women's Grand Lodge and the members of Vancouver Auxiliary will be privileged to hear more about this at the first meeting of the season.
