Ck>ntinued from Page 4 Lsh book. Nor does a book become a Jewish book by virtue of the Jewish-ness of the author's parents. A book may Justiflably be labelled Jewish if it fulfills the conditions required to qualify a person as an active Jew. A person who saturates his mind and soul with a Knowledge of and love for the Jewish past/who is aware of the realities of the Jewish present, and assumes responsibility for the advancement of Jewish life in the future, is a Jew in the best sense of the word.
A book is Jewish by the same criteria. This refers, of course, only to books written in languages other than Hebrew. Books published in Hebrew, whether they be Bibles, or Hebrew translations of Hamlet, are by Bny reasonable definition, "Jewish Books." Now a book is Jewish if it concerns itself with any aspect of Jewish life. If it is historical fiction, its characters must be identified as Jews by reason of their social, cultural, or religious distinctiveness. Its settings must be those places and periods of time wliich reflect Jewish civilization in action. History, essays, I poetry, philosophy, sociology — all I these forms of literary expression assume the aspects of Jewishness when they are concerned with physical and spiritual life of the Jewish people, when they reflect the hopes, experiences, the ideals, the psychology, tlie vicissitudes of Jews. Books that analyze and clarify the position of the Jews in the world today, that help Jews to understand their status and to orient themselves properly to the rest of the world, are Jewish books.
We may very well discover, when we set out to acquire books like these that, despite our reputation of being the "People of the Book, we suffer a poverty of books."
War Cris!
Refugee Work
LONDON (WNS) — According to newspaper reports here the Home Office Is faced with the problem of wh7,t to do with 40,000 refugees now in England in the event of war. It is believed that all male refugees may may be temporarily interned and released Individually when the status of each is made clear.
Meanwhile, the German-Jewish Aid Committee made public a cable received from the Trinidad Jewish Association. The message said the refugees were all "mindful of the hospitality of Great Britain" and that all Jews of Trinidad, including refugees "are completely loyal to England and gratefully pledge their full support."
LONDON (WNS)—The American consulate here has pigeon-holed refugee cases for immigration to the United States until the strained international situation brought about by the war scare is eased, and until the work of aiding American nationals return home is completed.
