joint distribution committee
One of the; component organizations wUch^m^ its appeal to Canadian Jewry now, is the Joint Distribution Committee. For many years the Joint Distribution Committee has heen one of the most ^ extensive and efficient relief and re-' construction agencies in the world. It has spent from the beginning of the last war until the end of 1938 the sum of $100,000,000. Behind tWs prosaic figure of one and eight zeros, what a world of' tragedy has been elleviated! It has rendered aid and succour in every conceivable form to the unfortunate and hopeless of our people, and has operated in almost every coimtry where Jews are to be found. At present, the Joint Dictribution Committee is co-operating with the Red Cross and the Society of Friends (Quakers) in those areas where suffering is now at its bitterest, affected by the general upheaval. THE OBT FEDERATION
The Ort Federation started its activities nearly sixty years ago, and during all that time has continued its work of industrial and agricultural training: of maladjusted and persecuted Jews. At the outbreak of the present war in Europe, the number of Ort activities had reached a total of 346 trade courses, agrri-cultural projects, industrial workshops^ a:nd factories, in Poland, Rumania, France, Lithuania, Latvia, Bulgaria, and Switzerland. It is significant to note at this time that the maximiun activity on record for the re-training of Jews in Europe in the various industrial and agricultural projects, occurred during the first World War, when thousands of Jews learned a trade for, the first time in their lives, and thereafter continued as skilled workers. The present European war presents an even more pressing call for similar productivlz-ation of Eiuropean Jewish masses and war refugees. Its desire is to prepare the victims of the present war to take up productive positions in the society which will emerge when chaos becomes order again. UNITED JEWISH REFUGEE AND WAR relief; AGENCIES
Another component organization which makes its. appeal to Canadian Jewry are the United Jewish Refugee and War Relief Agencies, which comprises The Canadian Jewish Committee for Refugees, the Feder-
