VANCOUVER, B.C., FRIDAY, JULY 19, 1940
SEATTLE JEWISH COMMUNITY COUNCIL
Within the last few days Seattle Jewry has made a momentous and without doubt an outstanding decision which in time will prove of tremendous value in uniting their Community.
This move to bring harmony out of chaos in Jewish Community work will be found a difficult one, as there are usually so many "die-hards." But no effort should be spared nor any discouragement permitted by its readers to interfere with the eventual goal. . . .„ ^ _ ,
Time, tolerance, education and more education wui be needea to bring this about, but much satisfaction can be looked forward to in time by those supporting the effort now in its initial stages.
The Vancouver Jewish Administrative Council is proud in having been mentioned often as an outstanding example to Jewish Communities on this continent, and can assure Seattle Jewry that this is the correct and only means to bring about a united and far-seeing Jewish Community. SUCCESS TO YOU-SEATTLE JEWRY.
B'NAI B'RITH AEROPLANE COMMITTEE
Much credit is due the officers and membership of B 'nai B 'rith for this very fine and noble effort in making such a substantial gift toward the purchase of an aeroplane in conjunction with the Vancouver Air Supremacy Drive. This was both tunely and
appropriate. , .„ , ^ j •
It is activities such as these that will have much to do in gaining whole-hearted support for the B'nai B'rith Organization with Vancouver Jewry as a whole, and wiU convey to those sceptics that Vancouver boasts of a united Jewry, that is for everything that has to do with bringmg this war to a successfm and if possible, a hasty conclusion. Credit goes to both Mr. Harold Freeman and Mr. A. 0. Koch for their combined leadership. Congratulations B'nai B'rith._
MRS. H. KOSTMAN. RECENT BRIDE, HONORED
RED GROSS WORK
All Canadian Red Cross supplies shipped overseas are going to fifttain as it is impossible for the Canadian or British Red Cross Societies to make shipments to Europe, Mr. F. W. Tuffrey, B.C. Red Cross Commissioner, announced. Blankets collected for sufFering refugees and wounded soldiers in France have not been sent to that coxmtry as the Red Cross could npt take a chance on their falling into German hands. The first shipment authorized before the Fi'ench armistice was diverted to England, where they will be stored xmtil needed. The remainder, about 60,000 will be held in Canada. Already the Dominion Government has asked for the loan of a quantity of them to equip colonist cars carrying overseas children to their destinations in Canada.
Red Cross WiU Meet B. C. Guest Children
If British Columbians expecting overseas children would notify Provincial Red Cross Headquarters, 213 Marine Building, every effort will be made through the Nova Scotia and Quebec Red Cross Divisions to see that these children are met and looked after at the ports of Halifax and Montreal.
W. I. Collects Waste Paper
Parksville Women's Institute is collecting waste paper, which a Victoria firm is buying for $8.00 a ton, proceeds to go to the Red Cross. Logging Companies Donate Ambulance
Xtaployees of three logging compa-liies of Queen Charlotte Islands— AHison, Kelly, and Morgan—have sent to the Provincial Red Cross Headquarters a sufficient sum to piu:chase a fully-equipped ambulance, which costs $1,750.00. Allison camp has installed a moving picture machine and net proceeds are remitted weekly to the Red. Cross. Marvel at Work, of Indian Children
The members of the Chilliwack Red Cross branch are marvelling at *he workmanship of garments knitted ;and sewn by Indian residential school tchildren at Sardis. The most success-lul Rose Show ever put on in the town netted $50.00 for ths branch treasury.
Bed Cross Now Will Take Used Clothing
Red Cross branches have now been instructed to accept "good as new" washed or cleaned used clothing, to be remade if necessary and stored aocally for use of refugees in Canada. No USED clothing is being shipped overseas.
CHAPEL SOCIETY NEWS
Social and general meeting of the Chapel Society will be held at the Community Centre on Wednesday evening, July 24, at 8:15 p.m., sharp. Refreshments will be served and cards will b. played after the meeting.
Council Camp News
Wit, humor and good comradeship characterized the closing dinner of boys' camp last Saturday night. Under the zealous supervision of Mr. . Zvii-^Schreiner the boys' session of Council Camp rose to a standard of excellence never before reached. Campers and leaders alike were continually on their toes, there was a steady flow of song and laughter— those two indispenaables of a successful camp. Health standards, under the watchful eyes of Nurse Rut-ledge were unblemished. There was no sick child at camp, and some of the credit for this can also be attributed to Mrs. Byrnes, the cook, who is a popular member of camp staff.
The girls' camp is now in session. It is larger than any camp in the annals of Council Camp and is under the able direction of Miss Beccy Blashko, trained grirls' worker, from Seattle. Miss Blashko wishes us to announce that Sunday, July 28th, will be the visiting day for girls' camp. We ask parents to observe this ruling as it is disrupting to the entire camp, especially when the camp period is only a brief two weeks, to receive guests at any time other than on visitors' day.
Following girls' camp comes the period reserved for Camp Mothers and their pre-school age children. Mrs. Louis Peinstein is registrar for Mothers' Camp and can be reached at Bay 8726-Y.
As an aid to the war effort, a new policy for camp prizes this year was established by Mrs. M. Cohen, chairman, who presented gifts of War Saving Stamps and Certificates to outstanding campers and all counselors. The same presentations will be made at girls' camp.
B. B. LADIES' AUXILIARY
A very interesting meeting was held at the Centre Tuesday evening, June 20th, when a report for the year was read, which this year will have as the Vancouver Representative, Mrs. Anne Nemetz.
Amongst other items of note is the steady progress made by the Auxiliary this year in spite of more difficult condicions, owing to the war.
The year's review of activities shows co-operation locally to a greater extent than any previous year. Substantial donations were made to Red Cross, and participation in sewing for Red Cross. A shipment of about eighty blankets were made for Polish refugees. A further instalment was made on a four-bed ward in the General Hospital, and the most recent efforts were directed towards the recent Air Supremacy Drive when a very satisfactory sum •was raised through the efforts of its membership and friends.

THE ZIONIST FRONT-
Don't let anybody kid you—there's real harmony among the Zionists today . . . Edmund I. Kaufmann's election to the presidency at the Pittsburgh convention was supposed to be a revolution, but what it turned out to be was a love-fest . . . Actually the idea of a coUegfium working as a cabinet has been carried out. . . . Vice-President Solomon Goldman will have the portfolio of culture, Vice-President Israel Goldstein will handle organization affairs, Vice-President Louis Lipsky will be in charg:e of propagan'Sa, Vice-Presidents Stephen S. Wise and Robert Szold will handle political affairs, and Vice-Presidents Morris Rothen-berg and Abba Hillel Silver .will have all-around duties without specific portfolios. . . . This isn't official yet, but it will be. . . . President Kauf-mann—whom a jokester called Wendell (Willkie) Kaufmann because of the blitzkrieg technique of his election—intends to make his cabinet work in all temperatures, but in the right regional set-up. . . . The first cabinet meeting' was held at Atlantic City on July 5, and we suppose that when the cold weather sets in the cabinet will meet in Mr. Kaufmann's luxurious hotel at Miami. . . . Emanuel Neumann is slated for the position of assistant to the president. . . .
BITS OF INTEREST
After that bomb explosion in tbee New York office of the Deutscher Handels - und Wirtschaftsdienst a couple of weeks ago, Assistant District Attorney Jacob J. Rosenbloom rushed down, in his official capacity, of course. . . . When he was announced to the Nazi executive in charge of the office, the story goes, the German tactfully turned the Fuehrer's portrait away before the Jewish official entered the room. . . . Did you know that in the effort to take the curse off German police dogs they are now euphemistically called^Alsation shepherds? . . . All of which doesn't change the fact that when you buy a genuine repre-i sentative of this breed you get with it a certificate from its trainer stating that said trainer solemnly swears that he is a full-blooded "Aryan" with no percentage whatsoever of Jewish blood. ... It seems that in Naziland the ruling is that a dog, no matter how pure-bred an aristocrat in its own right, becomes a mere mutt if its trainer has a drop of Jewish blood in him. . . . Perhaps those German bike champions weren't Fifth Columnists at all, but merely meant to serve as good will agents. . . . But anyway, so much hullaballoo was raised about their presence and so much suspicion centered about them that the purpose of their visit to these shores was nullified. . . . And so they have been ordered to go back to Hitlerland before the month is over. . . . Neal O'Hara wonders why no accounting is ever made of all the money the
very interested and supports all B'nai B'rith projects, one of which is to encourage leadership in its youth through means of such contests and ether intellectual programs.
Nazit! collect at home and among their sympathizers in foreign lands for their famous winter relief. , . A new fashion that is springing up in these parts is to answer the phone with the phrase "Stop Hitler" instead of the traditional «'Hello" . . . And a Broadway etymologist declares that it's Hitler who put the "s" before "laughter" ... you should know
The fall of Paris brought Hitler a rich haul of his favorite victims. . . . Not only all the German intellectuals who had left Naziland for France .and the Jewish refugees â– whom the French kept in concentration camps are now in Hitler's hands, but he'll also be able to exercise his vengefulness on Herschel Grjmszpan, the youth who shot a Nazi attache in Paris a couple of years ago. . . . And if you want an inkling of what Grynszpan's fate will be, just remember that it was after his assassination of von Rath that the Nazis had their infamous synagogue-burning spree. ... Now that we've seen "The Mortal Storm" we are doubly insistent that you see this film. . . . It's one of the most moving portraits of life in Naziland that could be imagined, and our only complaint against it is one that has been voiced by many others. . . . Namely, why wasn't this picture issued years ago, as soon as Phyllis Bottome's novel was published? . . . An anti-Hitler comedy starring Clau-dette Colbert and Ray Milland is being readied in Hollywood. . . . "Arise, My Love," is the title, and it's written by the scenarists of "Ninotchka." refugee report
A refugee in England is Henri Bernstein, the French playwright. . . .Only a few months ago he built a new theatre in Paris—but he had to leave it to Hitler ... A fascinating book about refugees and other Jews who eventually head toward Palestine has just been published by Robert Neumann, himself a refugee from Hitlerism. . . . Its character portraits are really something to write home about. . . That Nazi trick of planning Gestapo agents in batches of refugees is adding to the hardships of those German Jews who have been fortunate enough to get visas for this hemisphere. . . So aware are Uncle Sam and his Latin neighbors of the Fifth Column peril that they go over every group with a fine-tooth comb to weed one spies and trouble-makers. . . This of course means long detention and grueling questioning for real refugees also, and even has caused some of our neighboring republics to close their doors to this immigration. . . Friends of E. Phillips Oppenheim, worried at their failure to hear from him since the Nazi occupation of France, where the thriller-writer has been living, are hoping that he may have managed to escape Hitler's hordes, and point out that the fate of France could not have come as a complete surprise to him, since in one of his own books, published twelve years ago, this line occurs: ''By 1940 France will exist no longer." . . . But ol course it was the villain of the piece who uttered this sentiment. . .

By Hany Greenberg
The 'B'nai B'rith meeting of the month was held on Tuesday the 16th with Bro. Dr. A. B. Greenberg in the chair;
The final report of the Air Supremacy Campaign Drive submitted by Bro. Harold Freeman- showed that the great heart of B'nai, B'rith has responded magnificently in the effort to contribute a training, plane to the Royal Ca,nadian Air Force. Over $5800.00 cash was raised in little more than ten days, and ninety per cent of. this amount was actually contributed by members of the lodge. Bro, Freeman gave an excellent outline of the splendid work that was done and paid special tribute to the indefatigable efforts of Bro. R. L. Zien and Bro. A. O. Koch. He also had a word of reproof for those who hid their head in ostrich fashion letting the other brothers carry most of the burden. To shirk responsibility at a time such as this is surely unpardonable.
In voicing his appreciation the president, Bro. Dr. Greenberg, stated that the contribution was an achievement of which the lodge has every right to be proud. "We particularly appreciate the . splendid contribution, to the drive made by ,the Ladies' Auxiliary. And needless to say, the success of the undertaking is w-holly due to the untiring efforts of the executive and special committee who in addition to their generous personal contributions, gave willingly of their time and work. The success is a credit to the lodge and is a satisfaction in which every participant can. share." Committees for 1940-^
