Democracy in Action
Ask anyone you come across today, "What are we fighting for?" and you'll get back a quick and adequate answer, in one word—"Democracy." Then ask, "How can we put our democracy into action?" and the response will be more halting. There is, perhaps, no one answer to this question but the obvious reply would be "ByUvingit."
Annually Vancouver Jewry has a particular opportunity of demonstrating the principle of living democracy. On one day each year every man and woman of twenly-one years or over is privileged to hear the report of our organized community activity. He or she is further privileged to lend his advice or criticism toward the end of communal betterment, and finally, he is privileged to vote for his choice of officers and representatives who will assume leadership In the year to come.
This opportunity to live our democracy comes to us next Sunday through the annual meeting of the Administrative Council. This year the meeting will incorporate, likewise, the annual meeting of the shareholders of the Community Center.
All'will agree that in these stirring days the time is past for any one of us to sit back and "let the other fellow do it." Community business is your business, and we of Vancouver can take justifiable pride in the orderly and co-ordinated conduct of our communal affairs. It is interesting to learn that in the large city of Toronto an outstanding young social worker, Martin Cohen, has recently been named to organize his community along lines which we have carried out in Vancouver for nearly a decade.
So, let us resolve to live our democracy, to see it thrive through the active participation of each of us. This, today, is our most precious heritage and our foremost protection. B.B.
Hitler's Next Move
Mr. Hitler, as the new year of 1942 makes its entrance, is in something of a dilemma. He had promised the German people to finish the war in 1941 and here it's 1942 and what do the Germans see instead? They see the Nazic blitzkrieg in reverse in Russia and is also running as fast as their feet can carry them in Libya.
Mr. Hitler must do something. He has fired his generals but that is hardly the something which will redeem him in the minds of the Germans. He might, of course, take a stand and possibly try another offensive against Moscow, but that is hardly likely for it's rather cold around JSoscow. He,has^appealed.to.the Gennans to. give him their spare overcoats, but indications are that there aren't too many spare overcoats in Germany.
No, it seems more likely that since it's so beastly cold in Russia, Mr. Hitler will want a little relaxation in some warmer clime. He can't go to Florida so he will ga around the Mediterranean. The winter weather is very nice there and besides, he probably thinks, that a thrust against the British will be easier than against the Russians, who never seem to know when they are licked.
Already, the newspapers report that Mr. Hitler's Von Papen has been doing much visiting around the Turkish capital trying to get permission for German troops to pass through Turkey, but this permission is hardly likely to be granted.
But Mr. Hitler is a persistent fellow, and we may see him launching a third front in the Middle East. It may yet be that around the Palestine terrain. Hitler will get the knockout blow. Perhaps this is wishful thinking but we shall see—we shall see.

WARTIME NOTES ■--
Rumormongers are herewith invited to crawl b£U5k into the woodwork, and democatic-minded.aliens are as-, sured that they have nothing to fear from the American Government, which will continue to treat them exactly as it does its own citizens — notwithstanding the irresponsible gossipers who are trying to panic refugees from Central Europe by predicting that this country will put them in concentration camps. . Uncle Sam is not going to repeat the. mistakes of the French Government, •vVhich interned well-known anti-Pas-cist fighters because Germany was their land of origin. . . In Britain they've found the retort courteous to those garrulous know-it-alls who, unwittingly, do the Fifth Column's work with their alarmist or defeatist whisperings. . . . "Belial, here we come," is what you're supposed to say when such gentry start buzzing in your ear. . . Belial, yoa should know, is the ancient Hebrew personification of wickedness. . . . And in your hat you should paste this slogan, which stems from Hollywood: "Buy defense stamps and lick the other side." . . .

The Histadruth Campaign of the last year again surpassed all previous records In mobilizing financial means for tiie Palestine Labor Movement and in railing the Jewish masses of Canada and the U.S.A. behind oiu: cause. Despite countless difficulties, the campaign progressed and won additional support and friendship for labor Palestine.
More than 2000 Jewish organizations throughout Canada and the U.SA. with a membership of half a million were represented at nxun-erous city and regional conferences held during last year. This made the Histadruth Drive In a very real sense one of the most popular in the American Jewish community, Our support comes not only from leadership but also from the rank and file and from Individual Jews from every walk of life.
We have not been content merely to accept monetary contributions. The Histadruth Drive is everywhere conducted with maximum of enlightenment as to the piu'poses we serve. Special prc^ams have been presented In every community where speakers, printed literature and the movies have been utilized to explain the work of Labor Palestine. The thirst of the average Jew for a warm, sincere and honest word, the desire to forge an instnunent which can alleviate the suffering of our people by building a co-operative commonwealth In Palestine. These desires have been answered by the achievements of the Histadruth and the program of the National Labor Com-
mittee.
By conducting our campaign tode-pendently, we have been able to give iminhlbited expression to this wholesome spirit. Even In commimities where we are included in the Welfare Funds, we are not content witfe merely receiving an allocation, but Insist that the program of the Hist-, adruth be made known to the community as a whole.
The present world tragedy, of which the. Jews are the worst sufferers, has now placed new and heavier burdens upon the Histadruth in the struggle against Nazism and in the maintenance of our positions in Palestine. We must mobilize all friends of Palestine Labor, so that In this hoiu- of supreme challenge, we shall not be found wanting.
We, who live In a free land, must aid generously those who are bravely defending the Jewish National Home. The Histadruth Campaign in Vancouver starts on January 25, 1942, with a banquet held at the Commim-Ity Centre. Baruch Zuckerman will be guest speaker. Please watch for further announcements.

The Palestine Symphony Orchestra, which sticks to its morale-uplifting job come hell and Hai Amin El-Husseini, recently invited pianist Jose Iturbi to be its guest conductor next summer. . The Symphony management promised to provide an RAF bomber to transport Iturbi from America to Palestine, and to put him up, in case of emergency, in that Tel Aviv air-raid shelter the construction of which is a triumph of accoustical engineering, and which is the largest and most luxurious shelter in the entire Near East. INSIDE HITLEB
What happened to the Fuehrer, explains a local diagnostician, is that in the sub-zero weather of the Russian front the water on his brain froze solid. . . . And what really happened to General von Brauchitsch, a radio commentator insists, is that Hitler conferred upon him the highest honor that lay within his power to bestorw—the good old Axis double-cross. . . The end-of-the-year whisper v.-as that Hitler celebrated the last hours of 1941 by putting to death thirty-odd prisoners who had been caught during the year preparing his demise... . Adolf's intuition, it seems, told him that he would need all available prison space for the 1942 crop of Hitler-hitters. . . Did you know that Alfred Rosenberg, who single-handed created the Nazi religious philosophy out of thin air, also has written a book on Zionism as a force inimical to the state? . . . And that in the Nazi Who's Who such people as Rosenberg, Heinrich Himmler, Hans Frank, and other swastika-worshippers with names which to the uninitiated might sound Semitic, specify that they are Aryans and
for several generations? . . . HESS JEST
WInchell relays the one about the letter Rudolf Hess—remember him? —is supposed to have written to his old cronies in the Fatherland, telling them how well he was being treated in England, how he enjoyed the hearty British victuals, etc., etc. . . . When Hitler saw the letter he grew vastly disturbed, and called a meeting of aNzi party leaders to discuss the matter.. .. He read them the letter, and then deliered a lengthy harangue excoriating the British for softening up so Spartan a Nazi with the drug of easy and comfortable living. . . "Something must be done about this!" he shrieked in conclusion, and sat down and wiped his perspiring brow. . . . Seeing that the furor was finished, his listeners all jumped up and headed for the door. "Where are you going?" Hitler asked in amazement. . . And in a choriis they answered, licking their chops: "We're rushing right over to save Hess!". ...
BROADWAY BROADSIDE
Critical opinion was not entirely unanimous in praise of the new Clifford Odets play, "Clash by Night," v/hich marks Billy Rose's debut as a producer of serious drama. . But everybody agreed that the play would probably be a hit, with such stars as Tallulah Bankhead and Joseph Schil-dkrut. . . Welcoming Broadway's newest musical, "Banjo Eyes," Harry Horshfield announces that Eddie wins in a Cantor. . . Have you heard Al Lackey's new song called "I Wouldn't Be a Jap for All the Tea in China?" . . . Preparing for a real career in the drama is young Bobby Breen, who a few years ago was the movie's boy soprano, but who dropped out of sight when time lowered his voice by a couple of octaves, j . Georgie Jessel insists that he's going
tfcr with a theatrical agency. ... In times like these, says George, every man, women and child must work. . . ABOUT PEOPLE
There are sixty Jewish chaplains in active service in Hawaii, and Admiral Claude C. Bloch is one of the key naval figures on this pivotal defense bastion. . . . Jan Peerce, the Metropolitan Opera Company's sensational new tenor, now co-stars, with soprano Jean Tennyson, on the Columbia Broadcasting System's new Wednesday night series of highlights from famous operas. . . The son of David Samoff, president of the Radio Corporation of America, is cutting quite a figure in the town's night life these days. . . . But we wonder whether he'll ever reach the stature of his papa, who at the age of twenty equipped a vessel and made a trip to the Arctic ice fields as a wireless operator. . . We don't really expect Buddy Baer to beat Joe Louis in their heayweight championship bout this Friday—but we do think that Buddy (who, like brother Max, wears a Magen David on his boxing trunks) deserves some sort of rev/ard for his willingness to exposn himself to the Louis punch a second time,, and for donating a substantial part of his fee to the U.S. . . Do you remember Mary Small, radio's child songstress of only a few seasons ago? . . Well, she's going to become Mrs. Victor (song^writer) MIzzy next month. ... And did you know that bandleader Artie Shaw is entitled to write the words "Master of Music" after his name? . . . The degree, an honorary one, was conferred on him by the University of Omaha. . . . Before 1942 will be. over, Professor Albert Einstein will publish his new scientific findings, which wiW once more amaze the civilized world. . . . Among the Jewish leaders who will visit Latin American countries this year will be
ISTANBUL (WNS) —Nazi troops killed more than 600 Jews before abandoning that key city to the advancing Red Army, according to reports relayed to Moscow by. Russian guerilla fighters. These reports said that retreating Nazi troops were making Russian Jews pay heavily for the great Nazi defeat.
Accounts of the Nazi rout appearing in the Russian and Turkish press picture Russian Jews as suffering bitterly in all territory deserted by the Nazis or still held by the German army. The Nazi retreat, which is continuing on the whole 1,500-mile Russian front despite exhortations to his soldiers to hold the territory no matter what the sacrifice by Fuehrer Adolf Hitler, has cost thousands of Jews their lives.
Before preparing to abandon a Russian town, Nazi troops round up all of the Jews in the area and take them along as slave laborers. Most of the older Jews are lined up in the squares and shot. The Jews are used to dig trenches and to repair damaged equipment. In Russian cities where the Nazis
are still entrenched, the Jews are forced to give up their homes to Nazi officers and soldJfirs. According to the Moscow press thousands of poorly clad Jews were found frozen to death by adance Red Army units. The Jews had been thrown out of their homes, stripped of their heavy winter clothing, and forced to seek shelter in the forests.
In the Crimea, the reports added, Jews were forced to build fortifications under day and night fire by Russian artillery. Many Jews were assigned to work on roads which exposed them to almost certain death.
On the happier side of the picture, however, was the report that many young Russian Jews are exacting vengeance for the mistreatment Of their people by the Nazis. The famous Russian guerilla fighter??, heroe?i of all Russia, include a great many Jews. These fighters dynamite bridges over which Nazi troops are fleeing and mine roads shortly before the Nazis are expected to pass. The guerilla fighters are credited with playing ah important part in the present Nazi defeat in Russia.
