Intensive preparations are now under way for the conference of Talmud Torah teachers and workers which is schedul=,d to take place in Montreal. Planned by the £]duca-tional Committee of the Canadian Jewish Congress, the conference was endorsed in a resolution adopted by by the last Plenary Session of Congress held at the beginning of this year in Montreal, A conference of teachers and workers of Yiddish school (Shules) will be convened at a later date.
The Educational Committee of the Congress has set itself some high objectives, one of these being to stimulate the interest of the Jewish public in our educational institutions. It is the aim of Congress to help bring up a generation of Jewish youth who will be imbued with the Jewish national spirit and thus be able to set forth our national activities, both in our own communities and for world Jewry as a whole. To this end it is important to raise the level and thus enhance the prestige of Jewish instruction in Canada and to see to it that an increased number of Jewish children, both in the large cities and in the small towns, be given a Jewish education. The Canadian Jewish Congress, realizing that Jewish education should be a matter of concern to all of Canadian Jewry, has undertaken a wide program in connection with Jewish education, included in which are the teachers' conferences being planned at present.
Important educational problems will be discussed at the conference, whose special value will lay in the fact that it will give the teachers the opportunity to become familiar with the pedagogical achievements of their colleagues as well as that of gaining new social contacts.
The conference will be held in the Hebrew Educational Institute, on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, from April 16th to 19th. Following is the tentative program of the gathering:
Thursday, April 16th, 1942: 8:00 p.m., Opening, with the participation j of teachers, workers, guests arid Montrealers.
An address by a well-known educationalist of the United States.
Friday, April 17: From 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., A visit to Montreal Parochial schools. From 11:00 to 1:00 p.m.. First Session; 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., Luncheon; 2:30 to 5:00 p.m., Second Session.
Saturday, April 18: From 3:00 to 5:00 p.m.. An "Oneg Shabos" at a private home, and an informal discussion of "The Aims of Hebrew Education." From 8:00 to 11:00 p.m.. Third Session.
Sunday, April 18: From 9:00 to 11:00 a.m., A visit to Montreal Talmud Torahs. From 11:00 to 1:00 p.m.. Fourth Session: from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.. Fifth (last) Session.
The agenda of the conference will Include the following items:
1. The Parochial System (Day-schools).
2. Reports from all centres of the
Dominion.
3. Pedagogical questions and answers, theoretical and practical. (A special period will be allotted to the discussion of various problems raised. Questions will be put and answers given spontaneously by the participating teachers).
4. The aims of Hebrew education.
5. An organizational plan for permanent contact between all Hebrew teachers and schools in the Dominion.
6. Extra-curricular activities in the Talmud Torah.
7. Yiddish in the existing educational programs.
8. A seminary session on methods of teaching Bible and history.
9. The professional status of teachers.
10. Financial and administrative problems of our school systems.
Judging by the warm response received from various communities throughout the country, the conference should be well attended. A large delegation is expected from Toronto, which will include representatives from both the Brunswick Avenue and Eitz Chaim Talmud Torahs. There will be delegates from a number of Maritime communities. In all, a most successful conference is anticipated—the first of its kind in Canada.
CAN. PIONEER WOMEN GABLE 110,917 TO WOMEN IN PALESTINE
The Pioneer Women's Organization pledged itself at the Canadian Labour Zionist convention in Toronto and reaffirmed at the Regional Conference in Montreal, to raise the sum of $20,000 during the year for the Social Welfare and Training projects of the Moatzat Hapoalot (Working Women's Council in Palestine). More than half the sum has already been transmitted. Several months ago the sum of $6000 was cabled and this week $4917 (£1100) was transmitted to the Moatzat Hapoalot.
60 RELATIVES IN ONE-FAMILY ARMY
JOHANNESBURG (WNS)—Solomon N. Bernstein, a member of the South African Guards, laid claim to some sort of a record this \yeek with the announcement that he has 60 relatives fighting with the armed forces of the United Nations. The one-family army includes relatives by marriage as well as blood relatives.
Most of Mr. Bernstein's relatives are serving with the South African Army. Others, however, have joined up in England, Canada and Australia and represent the family Bernstein on fighting fronts throughout the world. The Bernsteins are in the army, navy, air corps and marines, some of them as privates, others as captains and majors.
Ford Asks Mexican Govt. To Stop Circulation of Anti-Semitic Pamphlet
^ life, "his attorney de-we have been doing
DETROIT (WNS)—Henry Ford, acting through his attorney, I. A. Capizzi, asked the Mexican Government to take action against the circulation of Spanish editions of the notoriously anti-Semitic pamphlet, "The International Jew" bearing his name.
Asserting that this was the work of "treacherous men who seek to cause disharmony by sowing seeds of intolerance in the name of the man who is doing more than any other one manufacturer to protect our tolerant v/ay o: clared that " everything possible to stop it."
Spanish editions of this scurrilous attack on the Jew have appeared in many of the Latin-American countries, including Argentina where the last edition sold 25,000 copies. Copies were also published and circulated
Barcelona, Spain.
The letter urging suppression of this pamphlet, was addressed to the Minister of the Interior of Mexico, Senor Miguel Aleman, and read:
"On behalf of Mr, Henry Ford, as, his legal representative, I write you relative to the alleged circulation in Mexico City and Pueblo, of a pam-
phlet entitled 'El Judio Internacional por Henry Ford.'
"I understand that this is the pernicious work of the German propaganda department attempting to undermine the esteem which the Mexican public have for the United States Government, by circulating a' misleading and deceitful republication of articles that were retracted by Mr. Ford In 1928 and at that time disclaimed by him as being an expression cf his sentiments.
"Although a copy of this pamphlet is not at our disposal, I understand that it indicates' that Mr. Henry Ford is the author. This is a gross misrepresentation, because Mr. Ford in 1928 publicly denied that these articles were approved by him before their original publication, and denies that they were an expression of his views or opinions.
"In the intervening years, Mr. Ford has been diligent in his efforts to suppress any attempt to renew the circulation of these articles. Therefore, in this instance, any assistance which your office can render in effecting the cessation of this harmful exhibition of deceit and misrepresentation will be greatly appreciated."
