A Purim Play by Rabbi E. M. Levy, produced by Miss Naomi Levy, at the Community Centre Sunday, March 28, 1943 Cast: Pupils of Beth Israel Religious School.
This drew a large audience to the Community Centre on Sunday afternoon, and judging by popular reaction during and after the play, can be considered a great success.
The role of Vashti was played by Nancy Brown with her usual charm, and dignity. She defied King Ahas-uerus with decided ^vgh^SffiiEiK^^^^ nation. Donna Weinberg took the part of Queen Esther at only four days' notice (owing to the regret-able indisposition of Phyllis Brown), with remarkable ability, and her royal charm even peeped through her ample fan. One felt it was no wonder she outshone the other competitors in the beauty show. Every inch a queen in her graceful attire. No wonder her royal husband could not resist her appeal on behalf of her threatened people.
Teddy Goldbloom was most imperial in his royal robe. Jerome Angel as Haman did very well, though we realize wnat a sacrifice It was on the part of such a good boy to play the part of such a bad man. But he did it alarmingly well. As a herald of the King, announcing the decree for the' royal divorce from Vashti, Stephen Bearg seemed to the manner born; and when he told Vashti to "get" and "take one week's notice"
and told Vashti in good Purim spirit that she was a "vash-out" Stephen's sense of humour had full play. As Modecai, Tommy Frank, in his flowing beard proved the incarnation of Jewish leadership. "Who may say, what he may be some day" leaped to the imagination as he played his role with generous emotion. As messenger, Howard Peck looked very reliable. Morris Korman as runner, ran well. He liked his staccato "Heil Hazzy" Martin Chess as royal cham-^i^KtVj :'.amed quite at home in an Oriental palace.
Naomi Shapiro, Ruth Korman, Leila and Daphne Nardell, and Susan Boyaner played the dual roles of ladies in waiting, and competitors in the beauty show; their versatility is very commendable.
Great credit is due to Miss Naomi Levy, who single handedly taught the children their parts and did the producing. Immediately before the performance she was aided by Mrs. Ablowitz in making up the performers; also several mothei's of the performing children. Thanks are due to Louis Hammer for almost a whole day's work in making the gallows; and also to Mr. and Mrs. Jimmy Morris of the Centre for their great assistance in staging. Mrs. E. M. Levy accompanied on the piano, aided by Myron Golden, who played "Der Fuerher's Face" while Haman was hanging, the whole audience joining in with great gusto.
