Reds Free 2,000 Women FromCamp
• MOSCOW (WNS)—The Russian Army, now close
to the gates of Danzig, has liberated 2,000 Jewish women from a concentration camp near Torun, it was disclosed here this week.
The women, deported by the Germans from various occupied countries to the camp in the Posen district, had been forced by the German military [authorities to work at building fortifications. They are now resting in Lublin, where Jewish] organizations and the Polish Red Cross are supplying them with food and shelter.
The retreating Germans in East Prussia injected poison into Jewish prisoners at the Debreck concentration camp near the city of Al-bing, Ilya [Ehrenbourg, [Russia's ace [war [correspondent, reports. The atrocities were disclosed by a few women survivors who apparently had not been given a strong dose. "It was indeed with very deep and genuine satisfaction that we in London learned that Canadian. Hadassah (the Canadian Federation of Wizo) was contemplating the setting up of a Children's village in Palestine. As you know,
our Wizo Executive in Palestine was at the very time discussing this very scheme and had indeed already taken up this proposal with the Jewish Agency. This telepathy of thought and action seemed to me a very striking symbol of the growing role of Wizo as a living and vital link between the women of Hadassah and the diaspora. The whole development of Wizo beyond the shadow of a doubt does not merely consist of a group of Federations or an aggregate of members but is a creative movement through which flow living ideas radiating from ite central focal point in Eretz Israel."
The Henrietta Szold Forest Fund tea will be held at the home of Mrs. M. Groberman on Wednesday, April 25th.
Red Cross
• NEW YORK (WNS) -> The Hebrew Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society (HIAS), meeting in convention here last Sunday at Hotel Astor, appealed for a settlement on the question of
Palestine.
One appeal was made directly to the forthcoming United Nations coriference at San Francisco, Tirg-ing the settlement of Jewish refugees within the countries represented.
Another resolution asked President Roosevelt to issue the necessary directives to "make the administration of the nation's immigration laws.less technical and more humane, to the end that as many families as possible may be reunited." The President also was urged to use his good offices to mduce Great Britain to revoke the White Paper restricting Jewish settlement in Palestine.
Throughout the three-hour meeting speaker after speaker declared that Palestine offered the best and perhaps the only solution to the Jewish refugee problem. Most of them attacked the policy of Britain in administering its mandate over Palestine and for failing to set up a Jewish commonwealth there.
Especially bitter was Representative Emanuel Celler of Brooklyn, who charged that President Roosevelt and the Democratic Administration had gone back on pre-election pledges to support the creation of a Jewish homeland in Palestine.
countries who had been taken prisoner by the Germans. .
A report on the revival of com-mimal and religious life among the Jews presently in Vibia was given here by Nison jAnelik, |a young clerk who survived the massacre of most of Vilna's Jews. Nison, who arrived here last week, said that there |are [about 4,000 Jews in Vihia and that two synagogues are fimctioning there: the Eolshoi Synagogue on Nemetski Street and the Choral Synagogue on Zavalna Street.
