FRINGE frompage9
- with life and acting, it would seem - is through her alter-ego, Robinska, a brash, passionate Gypsy who does the things for which Sutherland lacks the courage. Robinska provides humor, li^t and psychoanalysis for the benefit of both Sutherland and the audience. In fact, the two ' characters - the real Sutherland and the fictional Robinska - are so well defined that the audience feels Sutherland's discomfort on the stage, yet is immediately put at ease by the insightfiil, understanding Robinska.
The third performance is Peter Abrams' piece Peter's Passover Seder, in which Abrams first explains to the audience that a seder is a symbolic meal through which the stray of liber-
ation is told. He then welcomes to the seder table his late father, whose sexual and emotional abuse of the young Peter has never been resolved. This is a work of raw emotion and, as Abrams moves through the broken matzah and the bitter herbs, he compares his process of acceptance to the liberation of the ancient Hebrews.
All three actors are remarkable performers. Their stories are troubling, though, in every case, redemptive. All in all, a lot of emotion for the cost of admission.
Three Great Journeys is at the Pacific Theatre, 1440 W. 12th Ave., Sept. 13,10:30 p.m., and Sept 16,3:30 p.m. Tickets: $W/$8.
