British Perfidity ♦ . ♦
If there has ever been any doubt regarding the attitude of the British government toward ,the Palestine question, that doubt has now been dissipated by the treacherous, vile Inhiunan and Nazi-like action of the British authorities in Palestine.
As we go to press, full details of the British raids and rounding up of Jewish Agency leaders in Palestine, are not yet available. But all the reports so far indicate beyond a shadow of doubt that the latest British treachery was not only an attempt at furthering a program of terror and intimidation, but a deliberate attempt to liquidate the Jewish national home by imilateral action and in defiance of all commitments.
The action of the British Government becomes even more contemptable when it is realized that it was commenced at the very time when official British sources were intimating that negotiations were proceeding with ihe American government towards the settlement of the Palestine issue. That action is very miich reminicent of the treacherous Jap attack on Pearl Harhor while peace negotiations were going on in Washington. The British claim that the blitzkrieg against the Yishuv was made to insure the peace and security of the country against the activities of alleged Jewish terrorists and armed groups. But that was a dishonest contention. In the first place, to swoop down on a peaceful Jewish community on its Sabbath day, and arreist seventy or eighty thousand people, is as criminal an act as was ever committed by the Nazis. It savors of a Lidice spirit. To visit punishment on the entire Jewish community in Palestine for the alleged transgressions of a few, is an act in defiance of all decency.
, Certainly the arrest of members of the Jewish Agency executive was an act clearly designed to incite the Yishuv into action which the British hoped would furnish them with an excuse for a regime of terrorism. For throughout, these years of anxiety and tension in that imhappy land, the Jew-
a
ish Agency stood firmly for peace and order even at a time when it realized that its attitude might be interpreted as a sign of weakness.
It has been recently reported that the Arab League was contemplating to declare war against the Yeshuv, but that it abandoned its plan when it realized that the well-knitted Jewish commimity in Palestine would be more than a match for the Arabs.
Has Britain undertaken to do what the Arabs fear?

British Troops
(Continued from page one)
At the same time it was reported that the inner council of the Jewish Agency executive was to hold special meetings, where it i<s believed, the question of passive resistance and of a civil disobedience capaign may be discussed.
There has been comparative quiet in the coimtry. The Jewish commimity is showing iron restraint in the face of a provoking situation. So far five Jews and one British soldier have been reported killed.
Haganah, the Jewish self defense organization, declared in a radio broadcast that "Eritain has declared war upon the Jewish community and we will return it." It was recalled here that an Haganah broadcast on June 16 predicted the current British operations against the Jewish commimity with almost detailed exactness.
Irgim Zvai Leumi, Jewish extremist organization, declared in pamphlets distributed throughout Jerusalem, that if the authorities execute the two Irgun members who are under sentence of death they would kill the three British officers whom they are holding as hostages.
The brunt of the British operations were felt heavily in Haifa, Tel Aviv, Dagania, Naan, Misra and Givat Haim. At Haifa, thousands of Jews thronged the streets i!j protest against the seizure of the Jewish Agency headquarters. During a dash betv/een the police and the demonstrators, troops shot at the crowd, seriously woimding five, including a child.
At Sarid, the entire Jewish population was arrested. At Dagania
all males were roimded up. At Naan and Misra 231 and 84 men respectively were placed under arrest. When the Naan colonists ob-jerted to the search before all the residents had returned to their cottages, the troops lost their heads and in an ensuing clash 23 colonists were woimded. Givat Haim, the scene of la severe dash with British troops some months ago, was believed to have offered strong resistance to the raid. The colony was siirrounded by strong cordons of troops before the seardi began.
At Yagoxur, where tear gas was used, the troops daimed to have foimd 30,000 rounds of ammunition and 20 rifles. At Ramat Rachel the soldiers were i)articularly brutal using clubs and sticks to quell resii^tance.
The situation is reported to be tense throughout Palestine. But there is evidence that the Jewish community is determined to follow its leadership and that it was in readiness for whatever instructions it might receive.

You should know Dr. Irving Levey. He is a man who can rhapsodize with reli^ous fervor over a very old Hebrew book whidi he has in his koexung, even as other citizens gurgle happily on account of United Doorknobs having.gone up 3 points on the big ^diange this morning. . . ."Genevxa, my dear, we're $3,000 richer today on accoimt of United Doorknobs!"
The difference is that while the holder of United Doorknobs stock may celebrate the 3 points rise by taking Genevra, his wife out to the Okedoke Night Club, Irving Levey thanks God for His great merty in lettmg the old book live that long and for having permitted it to come to the keeping of his hands and eyes.
Probably the United Doorknobs stockholder couldn't -understand Irving Levey's mystical exultation over an old book. After all, he would say, it's just an old book. When all's said and done, it's a lot of old paper, and make something of that! And if you get down to the real facts, what's old paper worth? Tdl me! Sure it's interesting aU right, but—«> what?
On the other hand, look at my thousand shares of United Doorknobs. That's paper, too, but anyway, it ain't hay. At the market price, $35.50 a share, you can figure it out for yoursdf What my 1000 shares really mean.
I guess Irving Lev^ would laugh him oSi. He might say, but in 1000 yeajrs what will your stock be worth? And who will remember United Doorknobs? But this <book is like some element of eternity; I mean like stars, like the human spirit. In this physical form ifs already 426 years old, but it's content is about 1700 years old. It's the Babylonian Talmud, mind you. , You speak of your' Doorknob stock. Doorknobs are a great convenience; the way they let you into your house! But this book opens the door to a tremendous scene of hiunan life, into the corridors of your own hisiofy.
Just to be allowed to be the keeper of the book, Irving Levey feels richer than the Doorknobs stockholder can. Tomorrow the stockholder won't feel as ridi as he does today; tomorrow he will be imhappy because his stock hasn't gone up three points more fflnce today. . . ."Genevra, the stock han't moved a point"
Irving Levey will be as happy about is riches tomorrow as he is today. He knows they have to do with etemi^ and nothing can happen to make them worth less. He will keep on thanking God that all this wealth of Jewish books has been put into his hands to guard, as Librarian.
He is the keeper of the treasure house that is the library of the Hebrew Union College in Cincin-ati. A group of us heard him make a very brief speedi about his books the other evening. It was like listening to poetry and Irving Levey was like some rapt priest at a holy altar, the way his eyes glowed.
He had written a piece-"The Biography of a Book" in the monthly bulletin and the Hebrew Union College and he had put it on special display, together with other old books of Jewish life and learning.
Yes he (thought^ Jews shoxild look at this to know how really rich they are: this wealth of his-ory and of living they had done; these ridies of thought, this old civilization they had inherited, this long acquaintance with God.
Jews had been made to feel devastated and disinherited by their percecutors: it had come to pass that the meanest guttersnipe could flatter his mferiofrifer ^r despising Jews. Some Jews had come to question their own worth as Jews and to wonder what a
Jew, as a Jew, had to live for anyway.
In his "Biography of a Book", Irving Levey had in a way answered theiTuHe had invited Ihem to oome and browse among the books of his exhibit: This 'Babylonian Talmud and other ancient treasures of Israd . . . ."When you have idled away these few moments in delightful day-dreaming be-. fore the exhibit, you will condude that you have bdield an eternity of the Jewish ^irit," he wrote.
That was it: I, the Jew, have not been devastated ot disinherited, since I am the possessor of this eternity. I have this abimdant life that was lived before me and has been handed down to me in this printed record.
Shall I mudi mind my enemies who are newcomers in dvilization? I am an old, experienced hand at living as a civilized man. I should know the lessons. I am this old book and its rich spurit. I am the heir of a lift that was greatly lived and I am faithless to my inheritance when I become a frightened, furtive little guy who doubts his own merits as a Jew and is a-fraid of his shadow.
I shall walk in the world as a deserving heu:, as one who^ having lived a long time, knows very well that today's evil is like the ill wind that will pass in an hour; but whatever is good and right and lovely is etemaL The evidence of this book tells me that I must ,, be the Jew who knows his obligation bravely to live up to his great and good history ahd teaching.
Dr. Levey hopes that from looking at his timeless books, Jews will get his sense of being rich,
though he himself hasn't much more than his salary as librarian. He finds presious gold m what Rabbi Hiyya Meir of Venice wrote in this Babylonian Tahnud. (He was one of the editors.) He praised God for the privilege of having had to do with "this sacred work". Dr. Levey finds gold in the humility of Comelio Ade-Ikmd, typesetter and proof-reader of the book. He wrote in it a hiunble plea to the readers to be patient with its mistakes and shortcomings.
Thanks to Irving Levey for showing a way to feel riich.
