SaulHayes Back From Paris Peace Conference
Saul Hayes, National
Executive Director of the
Canadian Jewish Congress,
returned to Montreal on
September 3rd from a visit
to Europe. He attended the
Peace Conference at Paris
and visited Britain and
Sweden. At a press conference which he
gave Sept. 4th, he stated that it
was the view of all the representatives of the Jewish, organizations
who were present at Paris that the
Jews in many icountries of Europe
have a very strong sense of insecurity. He quoted as example the
statements of representatives of the
Jews of Rumania and Hxmgaty,
who felt that without effective in.
temational guarantees the clauses
written into the Peace Treaties assuring Jews of just treatment
woxild be of little value. However,
Hayes warned against a doctrinaire
approiaidi to the complex problems , of European Jews. He said that ' conditions vary from country to
coxmtry. and the reprentatives of
the Jewish organizations who were
gathered at Paris took this fuilly
into consideration in drafting their
submissions.
The representatives of the Canadian Jewish Congress partidipated
fully in the disousatoais and for
first time in history they wer^ one -• ' • "

B nai BVith Plans Outstanding Meeting
The Program Committee of Vancouver Lodge B'nai B'rith, No. 668, has spared no efforts to make the opening meeting of the fall season, on Tuesday, September 17th, a most outstanding one, educational and entertaining.
in the public press that the Jewish Agency has proposed the partition of Palestine into two states, one Arab and one Jewish, Dr. Silver said that "between sessions of the World Zionist Organization only â– tlie Actions Committee has authority to act for the movement and that body has not yet met to discuss this niatter and has not authorized any proposals as were reported in the press."
Dr. Silver emphasized that his criticism of British policy should not be interpreted as anti-British. "We all have the highest regard for the people of Great Britain, for the high concepts and standards of democracy and law which they have achieved, and for the . courage and bravery of their fighting men. But men who love freedom and justice, wiho, like us are lighting for the right of an ancient and honorable people which have suffered so much to find
peace at last in its historic home, cannot help but record that their present government is piuisuing a woefully wrong-headed and dan-gemusly blimdering policy in regard to Palestine of which they, themselves, loyal to their tradition, cannot approve."
Asked to comment on the recent charges that the officials of the State Department have consistently frustrated American policy on Palestine Dr. Silver said: "Unfortunately Crum's charges are all too \rue—if by American policy is meant the oft repeated public statements of the Presidents of the United States. There has long been a record of amazing and bewilder-iiig incongruities between what the President says and what the State Department does. We refuse to accept the alternative that the President and/ the State Department have a tacit understanding to give the Jews of the United States a run around."

Polio Not Only Serious Threat, Says Statement
Except in Polio Epidemic Year^, Whooping Cough, Diphtheria and Scarlet Fever, Mostly Preventablt XDiseases, take Greater Toll says Health, League.
The present outbreak of poliomyelitis in scattered sections of Canada is tragic — tragic in that it is killing and crippling many of it imfortunate victims, the Health League of Canada said in a statement issued today. It added, however, that it should bei emphasized that it is important that at this time Canadians do not lose sight of the fact that there are other diseases — preventable diseases— which year in and year out take a greater toll than poliomyelitis.
The statement, issued in connection with forthcoming "National Immunization Week"—Septem-bar 29 to October 5, said that few Canadians realized that whooping cough in 1945 caixsed more deaths in Canada than .poliomyelitis diphtheria and scarlet fever combined.
There were 457 deaths from v/hooping cough, 270 from diph-tiieria, 79 from scarlet fever and 24 from polio. And, none of the first three was considered to be epidemic at any time during the year.
The statement said that while h . is tragic that medical science has been imsuccessful in attempts to develop a preventive for poliomyelitis, it also is tragic that the Canadian public does not co-operate 100 per cent in losing the available means to wipe out or curb diseases which are either whollj' or partially preventable.

Yom Kippur Dance Oct. 8th
For a number of years now, Vancouver Lodge B'nai B'rith No. 668 has had the pleasure of holding a Yom Kippur Night Dance, and has received the whole-hearted, support of the Vancouver Jewish Community on these occasions. As a result, this affair has proved to be the outstanding Jewish social event of the year.
However, due to the fact that this season, Yom Kippur Night falls on Saturday, it is impossible to make satisfactory arrangements to hold the Lodge's Annual Dance on this night. Arrangements have, therefore, been made to hold the Annual SupiJer Dance, with entertainment, on iTjesday, October Sth at the Commodore Cabaret.
The Jewish Commtmity is invited to join the B'nai B'rith Lodge in celebrating the Holiday Season on this date. Kindly keep this date open, and make up your parties for a real enjoyable evening.

American Zionists Warn Britain Against Dealing With Mufti
NEW YORK (WNS)—A resolution expressing confidence in the leadership of Dr. Abba Hillel Silver, ZOA president, was adopted here by the national executive of the Zionist Organization of America.
The meeting, an all night closed session at which the general Zionist situation was thoroughly discussed, approved a resolution rejecting the "imputation conveyed in the tendentious and harmful reports that Dr. Silver and the masses of American Zionists whom he leads represent an 'extremixt' position in contrast with the allegedly 'moderate' position of the Jewish Agency executive." The resolution also expressed regi-et over "the equally unwarranted suggestion that he or we are motivated by anti-British sentiment."
At the same time the ZOA executive gave approval to a resolution warning Britain against per_ mitting the former Mufti of Jerusalem to participate in the forthcoming London round-table talks on Palestine. The resolution stated the Zoa was "profoundly shocked at I3ie press reports that the British Government is agreeing to permit the participation in ,the projected Conference on Palestine of Hadj Amin ei Husseini, the ex-Mufti of Jerusalem, the Nazi agent and co-instigator of the mass-
murder of 6,000,000 Jews."
"We refuse to believe," the resolution stated, ":that any civilized government would stoop to confer with this war criminal a-bout either Palestine or any other subject, and we regard as inconceivable that he should be granted a voice in the fate of the Jewish people and the future of the Jewish National Home."
A resolution reaffirming the official program of the Zionist nwve-ment, calling for free entry of Jews into Ptlestine tnd the establishment of Palestine as "a Jewish Commonwcaltli with full equality of rights and status for all its inhabitants," declared that "this pro-gi-am has been adopted and ratified by the highest instances of the World Zionist movement and has been approved by the over-v/helming majority of American Jewry," and that 'the ofTicial Zionist position has never been reversed or modified by any World Zionist conference or Zionist Congress empowered to make valid decisions toudhing basic Zionist policy and principles."
