ignore. It provides an opportunity to acquire something of the mentality of veteran troops. Meaningless optisim has no place in such an outlook. Those who predict the arrival of an era of peace and happiness. But the veteran trooiper has a kind confidence bred of battle. He has a vague feeling that he will still survive, having survived so much; that it's all a matter of digging your foxhole deep enough. Perhaps that is what we should pray for on Bosh. Has-hana.
Ther is something else that l^e cards bring to mind. It is reassuring to remember that Jews can laugh, or at least that they once did. We have learnt to assodate the word Jew only with tragedy. That is why these cards are so valuable to us. There are. tinaes when OVLT diildren lay doubt that our heritage has ever been a faap^ py one. The cards remind us that not every holiday is a memorial.
The cards also voice a silent promise. They are a goal as well as a reminder. They are something to aim for. What we once achieved, we can once again achieve. Tht peace that aUowed for humor and happiness is not only past, but is poissibly in the future. Not in the near future, but in the future. We are veteran trooips; we Jews. We know that it is all a matter of digging our fdsdholes deeply enough. Another Rosh Hashana; another battle ended, another be-gim. We'll survive.

Whatever is being built'is noade to be taken away, including madiinery, work-benches, laboratories, furniture and plumbing. Even the basketball hoops built for the outdoor gymnasium wiU leave Germany with the Jews who made them.

Then in 1939 Poland was invaded, invaded and enslaved. And Urka, together with his fellow Jews, was imprisioned in the Ghetto. Once again Urka began tinkering withl locks. He organized a new gang—a gang that harassed tlie Nazis. At night they filtered out of the Ghetto and broke into the stoirehouses The next day the Jews would be properly fed. They raided the wareQiouae. The next day the Jews would be warmly clothed. Dynamite would be shipped into Warsavr. That night the bridges were blown up. and Urka developed a new talent—the talent of silent, swift murder. He resolved a Nazi a month and a Nazi a month it was for eighteen months. The nineteenth month Urka was captured. How he was kijled no one knows. Where be was buried no one knows. But rumor has it tliat the Nazis invented an un-pidcable lock and fastened it to Urkas' coflEin. To this day not one of his disciples ttias managed to open that lodk. Urka might have. But then — Urka is dead.
