after they arrive, a meeting is held at which speakers explain to them in Yiddish and German the advantages of living in a neighboring commiinity -wihere an organized Jewish group has undertaken to ihelp them establish themselves, and where they will have a chance for speedy adjustment to American life. Those interested are immediately interviewed by resettlement constdtants, expert in helping the newcomer to select a commtmity suited to his background, vocation, and personal requirments. So effective is this program that although no effort is made to "high-
pressure" the immigrants into re- 1473 W. 41st Ave. KE. 0094 settlement, 60 per cent of the newcomers without relatives here, who ^^^^^^^^^m^^^mmmS^ come on United Service affidavits, ^^"^^^^^^^Mi^^^BMMS
resettle promptly away from the port of entry.
Typical of the experience of these people is a letter received by the agency from a family whirh resettled in a midwestem city:
"Please accept my best thanks
for directuig us to -----------------......—.
We were met at the station by
Miss ____.........._______ from the Jewish
Family Service who took ua for a breakfast and then to our home. We were surprised that a flat, newly painted in nice light colors, of 4 rooms and a kitchen was ready for us. We fotmd a pantry full of food and new dishes and a nice frigidaire with plenty of fruit, milk, butter, cheese and many other things in it. The rooms are fum-itured. We have three new beds with matresses, table cloths, napkins, sheets, towels, etc cushions all new, new kitdhen tools, new linoliiun and even an alarm dock. The reception was so cordial, the people so lovely and the town so nice and pleasant that we could hardly believe that this is not a dream. We are happy, very happy, and we don't know how to express our feelings and gratitude. Since 1939 we have again a home, our home."
This kind of happy ending to the wanderings and sufferings of our feUow-Jews from Europe is ample payment for the efforts on their behalf of American Jews, locally and through the "United" national program. But it is by no means the only result. Every successful adjustment of a New American strengthens the American policy of a^lum, and paves the way for continued admission ©f others. Every homeless and dispossessed person admitted here strengthens the force of this country's humanitarian leadership among nations, and thus helps to open the door to other lands of possible haven. The cumultative effect of this program on the course of events in Palestine and elsewhere is incalculable.
Here is a very great return indeed for our hospitality extended to our kin on our own threshhold and at our firesides; a treasure in our own dooryard worthy of vai-ited and dedicated effort.
