THB~JEWISH WESTEJIN^
' Thrwi^ the years of the yrar, a great number of tis nurtured a fond hope that f5» close of lie -wiar would see the founding of a Je^" ish State in Palestine. We ima-;gmed (and with soone justifilcatioh) that after what. we had suffered sad after what we had contributed to. the Allied war effort, the very least we could «qpect was a homeland to call our own.
ON SELF-BELP
Surely, we thought, ones- the war was over, Jewry's dream would at long last be fulfilled. There in Eretz Israel Jews from all over the world would focus their creative powers and once more Ite Law would come forth from Zion. To EIretz Israel would go Has hundreds of thousands of our homeless and oppressed brethren. Prom "flie notorious concentration comtps of Europe, &om the squalor and op-.poressioh of Yemen, from all countries of persecution would Iciome Jews to rebuild their lies in Eretz Israel. To Eretz Israel, it was hoped, would go the thousands of Chalutzim from all over the world —from Europe^ from England, from America,, from Canadar-to be the vanguard in rebuilding. Eretz X^aei Yes, we dared, to hoipe that after so many years of <^»pression we would finally be' able to live our own lives in our own Hbme-land.
And ye^ yitat basis did-we have for these hopes? W^as not Britain iG^ving us every indioaiioia lliat th^ were xdpe -dreams? Ibat £3ie had no intention of cancying out lany such pro,^^an?
'MSiir^(^''}iot'irealize y^t was thj©

Still, in the face of all the evi-dence to &e contr^syv 'W? looax'&i-ued in' our hopes that iBritain would be the "ardiitect of the Jewish futUTft"
"All these things are because of the prMsure of the war," we said. "When peaiie iim^ sind iBrit^ is

tent We were cbi^tent to wait in thesure confident that with the coming of peacie^ our dreams would be realized. We were content to wait for this new 'Madiiadi' to lead us bafck to our land.
Well, the war is ©vsr. What is the situation now?
There has been little immigrar ti<Hi to Eretz (except for the entrance of an estimated 100,090 British troops). Refugees "sore still forbidden entrance to our bomelarid. There are still concentration camps in Europe (under new "masters" to be sure) and more are being set ujp in Cyprus. The provisions of the infamous White Paper are stiU ui force and Britain's plans for partition or federalization ooily perpetuate them.
jyhat must we learn from the event sof the last few. years? .'We must Egalize tiiat natsoajs are concerned with theic own fate, not with oitts," that their object in tlus world is to look out for themselves, not to make sin« that justice is done. We must cease daydrejun-ang about what is gtring to be done for us by; the U.SJL, whose polU^ <ss Palestine has been wrak and self-contradictory, or by Busaa, who has consistently oippoes# Zion-isn as the "^tspaw of Britisih^^^ perialism."
All this is not to say that we should :iu>t.ne|^itiate on diplo-otnatic level, it is to say that we should come down to earth in our thinking and that we should pea-h*ze that not>ody is going to do us a.'*toij^7,an^.#^^ -.*l»t1i^^
