Apologies
"I am sick and tired'of seeing and hearing people today defending their positions as Jews. It is high time that these people stopped concerning themselves about 'Mah Lomer Hagoyim* and started behaving in a manner best calculated to reflect tiidr true personality growth." \
With these remarks,^ Dr.' Abraham Leon Sachar struck the key note of his address "In Defense of Tomorrow," which wbs delivered before an audience of several hundred who fiUed the haU of the Congregation Schara Tzedeck Synagogue, 19tb and Oak, on Wednesday evening, November 5th.
Visiting the City on the occasion of the opeiilng of the HiUel Building on the campus of the University of Etitish Columbia, Dr. Sadiar, national director of Hillel elaborated on the general theme and pointed out that the work of Hillel was especially important today when all symptoms seemed to indicate that our civilzation was definitely not normal. He .> stressed the fact that young people were in need of help and pointed out that it was the inspiration of a non-Jew that was originally responsible for the establishment of Hillel. He hoped that this community would see to it that the pattern set by other Hillel groups in both Canada and the United States would be followed throu^ to such an extent that eventually a full time director would be required.
He pointed to the fact that Hillel had among its high ideals the* establishment of a self-respect, a high sense of justice, and a feeling of dignify so essential to the sotmd personality.
Literspersed with the message were touches of gooft humor and anecdote that warmed the audience and won its admiration. Those present seemed to appreciate the authority behind this noted scholar's remarks as Dr. Sachar has an enviable record as a profound student of Jevnsh affairs and is recognized as the author of "A^Bstory of the Jews" and several other works. ■
The speaker was introduced by Rabbi David C. Kogen, local director of HiUel and was thanked by Mr. B.. M. Isman, Vice-President, of Vancouver Lodge B'nai B'rith. Also participating in the program were Cantor Samuel Stol-nitz and the Beth Israel Choir, the UBC Hillel Pliayers and Mr. David Chertkbw, who officiated as Master of Ceremonies.
